I was intimidated at first but one day I had my headlight level adjuster broke off and it would not pass inspection so I figured if i have to buy a new one might as well play with this scrap one first and I was surprised how easy it came apart I epoxy glued the adjuster back together and resealed with the same glue it already had on there and it has no leaks no nothing passed the inspection and works just fine still, I didnt use an oven either just an electric house room heater radiator thing, it doesnt take much

Thanks so much for the tip. I've tried painting the inside fitting of headlight. However, under extreme heat, the paint melts and caused some really bad overlapping blisters. An alternate option without painting at all and going right to black is using ZEP Industrial Purple in a bucket, just get like two to three gallons in a bucket and just dip headlight/backlight housing for about 5 to 10 mins then rise it out with water to remove the soapy foam and Tada! My first time i did it over night, it was overkill hehe. But super happy with the outcome.

For headlights, this is only if you are doing Projectors and or Resto Mod Projectors since the chrome backing on them will be necessary if using traditional bulbs.

Just something you need to know: that is not chrome you are painting. It is aluminium applied to plastic parts by vapour deposition. It's an awfully long time since headlight reflectors were actually chrome! the part you painted completely black you could have put through the dishwasher to remove the aluminium and then painted the virgin plastic (usually PC, sometimes UP - look for the code on the part). Either method id valid though and arguably the aluminium is a bettter surface to spray to than most plastics. looks a lot better after though!

Parts of the chrome-look are "working" areas that reflect light (directly behind the bulbs for example), but it's okay to paint 'non working' areas, like the surround of a projector. I'm doing a similar project at the moment as a mini series and am going into quite deep detail if you want to take a look.

I hate the overuse of chrome... old Mustang, maybe... 57 Chevy, definitely... anything newer than 1975, why?!
@CycloneCyd4 жыл бұрын
Headlight reflectors are not chrome. It is aluminium applied to the plastic by vapour deposition. Obviously, the "working" surfaces have to be shiny reflective but otherwise, I agree about the overuse of chrome / chrome-look. I've got to replace the projectors in my headlights, so I'm doing a mini-series about the job, including a little modest customisation with both black and body colour.

@simpleautothings_official35494 жыл бұрын
Base models got black trimmings lol
@CycloneCyd4 жыл бұрын
Ha ha, yeah, that's because it's not actually chrome. It's aluminium applied by vapour deposition for a chrome-look and highly reflective surface (for the 'working' surfaces of the lights. When the individual plastic parts are being made it is actually cheaper to paint them black than apply aluminium, hence 'base' cars getting black and higher trim levels getting chrome-look.

Be careful recommending people melt sealer to split headlights mate. Get them to research their car first. I have an e93 LCI that i want to do this to, but they actually plastic weld the lenses on the LCI headlights, and trying this will likely have people melting their 1000 pound uk (each side) headlights if they dont know that. Mine have to be dremeled off and then replaced with new lenses stuck on. Its. A right. F*ck on...

@@customspraymods oh yeah ten minutes wont hurt im just thinking of "The Public". If it doesnt work in 10 mins some might be tempted to try a bit longer. The guy who clued me up on my bmw headlights (and quoted me about 6-700 quid to do it all for me, to indicate how difficult mine are to seperate) said he gets quite alot of this style light that are actually melted for just that reason. Still class vid tho, I want to matt black my entire headlight, and then put a light smoke tint so a bit like net curtains, the emitted light is legal you cant see anything in the light so it looks really blacked out. :)
