Great video, really helpful. Regarding the giving of Information, here's an obscure one for you! When I did my IAM Advanced Test back in 1989, I was self taught from an old edition of Roadcraft. (I never had any Observer sessions.) As a result, when I came to an acute blind corner on a country road, I would sound the horn. The examiner liked it! Might be worth at least considering in some cases e.g. going round an acute blind left hander with the possibility of hidden pedestrians walking toward you on your side of the road. You'd be driving at a speed where you could stop anyway, but the horn warning encourages the pedestrians to be on the lookout for you and perhaps step nearer in to the side of the road. A little bit safer for everyone.

The only disadvantage to this is if there is a horse and rider or livestock around the acute blind corner and sounding the horn could startle the horse/livestock.

@@pete1996 horses are a fair consideration. That's why I only gave a short toot a reasonable distance from the corner. Enough to warn those who are listening, not enough to alarm an animal. Actually on my way to the IAM test, that happened. Tooted the horn, came round the corner and found not one but two accompanied horses. No problem was caused for them. In fact, my horn may have helped. A car was pulling out to overtake the horses but had started pulling back in behind them just as I appeared. I surmise that the driver heard my horn and aborted the overtake... but I accept it could just have been the driver deciding against a risky overtake regardless of the horn blast. To be honest I very rarely do it nowadays. Just it may be worth considering...

For the IAM stance on offsiding I find the best way to explain this is with regard to view. "Maintain not gain". So it's not quite never venture over the line. What they are trying to avoid are those (and we've all seen them 'showboating') who move offside late on approach to a blind left bend. Within the confines of the NSL there not many places it is of a huge benefit. However get onto the wide open flatlands of the Fenn roads and there's an awful lot of straightening that can be done that could be argued to be off siding. A contentious subject. Keep safety as priority and don't let the desire for view compromise that safety.

Being unable to take a course myself due to the events in the past year and a half or so, I've been watching training videos on KZbin to 'self-educate' on advanced driving. Cornering is where an issue has been made apparent from this video with me using emergency response training videos to do so partly, P1 through to P6 being covered. Civilian clearly only want P1 through to P3 used. If I get round to taking a course here in Northern Ireland (car), I'll have to refrain from taking up P4. :)

Watch out in New South Wales Australia - Road rules state - 'A driver on a road must drive as near as practicable to the far-left side of the road. This rule does not apply to the rider of a motor bike.' Often wondered if I would ever need to go to court to argue over the word 'practicable'. The rules here are not generally conducive to the British term advanced driver.

I perform ok on rural roads and motorways after a few months of practice but when I enter a busy city I lose concentration and fall behind the huge amount of information from various hazards
@Abigail-Rebecca
@Abigail-Rebecca 3 жыл бұрын
@@mammadtori3964 When you are losing concentration in a busy area, it is probably the best time to use your commentary skills. If you're not practiced at commentary, just call out the most important hazards as you see them at that time (pedestrian waiting to cross, driver indicating to pull out, dog on a lead - include type of lead short, controlled lead or extended uncontrolled lead and so on). This will help you to recognize and prioritise hazards in terms of how much risk they are at that exact moment in time, but remember risk is fluid and can change at any time. Hope that helps.

Very useful and informative video, Reg! Nice scenery as well with typical Scottish weather - very beautiful even with rain!. Would it be possible to put a go pro camera to a stop light to see, where and when you start using brakes before the corner? Just an idea. Was very interesting to see the differences and expectations between IAM/RoSPA and police examiners. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and skills with us! Absolutely great stuff!

At 19:46 would you not be criticised for the offside junction near the bend? Couldn't see it until mid way through the overtake, just curious where the line is

What do you think of lane keep assist on modern cars? Is it a benefit or a hindrance? I think if you had it on during this drive, it could easily upset the balance of the car.
@markwright3161
@markwright3161 3 жыл бұрын
I imagine he turns it off. It would be buzzing every time you'd try to go nearside or offside of your lane, if not trying to steer you back to the centre, and it would definitely interfere with smoothing out the exit of righthanders. I'd say full on hinderance as the driver shouldn't be doing anything that needs the car to steer itself back into lane, especially an advanced driver.

When I bought one with that gadget, I didn’t like it on some roads, especially if they tend to have a lot of poor maintenance along the left side with potholes etc. Now I’m just used to it and don’t turn it off. It works well with proper lane marks for the camera to detect and aims at keeping the car in the centre of a lane. It does require use of the indicator to stop it from reacting to any lane change. In the old days, I wouldn’t always do that at all for some changes, but it’s done on account of the lane keep assist - not necessarily to assist any third party outside! You probably come across many that use their indicators quite late to be of any value, so they might well have cars equipped like that.

I think your use of the phrase “more acceleration” might be confusing to some. One accelerates on corner exit… One uses the accelerator pedal to maintain velocity through the corner, and constant velocity means NO acceleration. There, fixed. Good vid overall though

Why would I only get a pass and not a 1st if the IAM don't want you to go offside and the rest of my drive is crisp clean and to a very high standard why should you not be awarded a 1st

I know this is a demonstration video and he is not on test but I cringe at the number of times he takes his hands off the wheel. If on test, a fail. Also, as he's driving in Scotland he should not be using the offside lane when cornering left. Illegal in Scotland. Just before the 20 minute marker in the video, he overtakes several vehicles where there is a junction on the right hand side. He may or may not have seen it was clear. I'm very careful anyway overtaking more than one vehicle in case one decides to overtake the one in front. Good point about horn use on blind corners. I tend to lower the window so that I can hear sounds of approaching vehicles. (Got that tip from my observer during one of our drives together)

@@Duncan94 i believe he's referencing the police scotland policy NOT to teach any offsiding in their training. A policy change due to a tragic fatal collision. But it's not law. Broken centre line => no specific law governing which side of the road you must use.

6:05 didn't seem to notice that car waiting to come out of the junction (hazard) and then goes miles over the centre white line for no reason, without checking rear view mirror to see if was safe to do so. And all of this at 60mph in torrential rain! Fail, no question about it
@markwright3161
@markwright3161 3 жыл бұрын
He's distancing himself from that car to make it safer to maintain progress as it also straightens out the corner/increases the radius a bit as well which helps keep the car more settled, especially in the conditions. Also, this video is specifically about cornering, it's not a full commentary drive, so there's no reason to mention that car as it doesn't impact cornering being stationary on the outside. If it was a more closed view corner he might have mentioned it as he would probably take up the normal driving position instead of nearside because of it, but as he's flowing through the next left on exiting that right, its position doesn't change his intended positioning.
