I've been using this technique as a beginner in my first welding class on thinner material. Doing a 14 gauge steel vertical assignment I found it difficult to deal with the workpiece overheating when doing straight stringers, which then affected the consistency of my weld. Doing this felt like cheating once I got the hang of it. Night and day difference with regards to heat buildup. Thanks for the video.

nice, I have been struggling with my finger control and I'm about to buy a foot pedal soon. I'm excited. Thanks for making this video. This is exactly the kind of welding I want to learn how to do. For my samurai. I want to build a back bumper a front bumper maybe a roll cage some day.

Hi great video! Most of the motorsports places im familiar with when doing 4130 cages only do a single pass on there weld joints. Do you suggest running a small root pass on roll cage joints as well? Thanks

Its all personal preference. This is just the way most of the trophy truck guys get so much consistency. For production work its just adding more time. The main benefit is that you can make everything super consistent.

A little too much work to do 2 passes with Tig on mild just for cosmetics. At that point, since it's an automotive application, I'd just weld slightly cold with mig. Good video thought, ever think to just do a quick autogenous root and laywire with 3/32 filler and pulse? Could probably even forgo fusing the root first if you go hot enough on pulse.
@5thStreetFab
@5thStreetFab 4 жыл бұрын
Agreed its usually on 3/16" bit all i had was 1/8" ya that would probably work well i was just showing the technique they use and its nor.ally for 4130
@tomthompson7400

so just how much post flow do you run on mild steel ?? the finished profile on that weld is tragic , way under filled , I would doubt if you actually have a mil of steel in x section at the root . Why would you weld anything like that do you have an approved welding code or procedure , or is it just stick things together and hope it stays that way . I really hope your insurance is in date .

@@5thStreetFab would love to see that test piece cross cut and etched , not for pen , for area . Maybe its just on this demo that the finished weld is so low in profile , please dont tell me you actually send stuff out the door looking that way . I hope its just a trick of the light , maybe just the way the camera makes it look in the video.
@5thStreetFab

@@tomthompson7400 haha i think you might have only seen the first pass i did on it. After the first pass was done and cooled off, i added a cover pass with much more filler, but its only like the last minute of the video.
