A move I use when taking pictures is to use a set of headphones with volume buttons as a kind of external shutter button to prevent shaking the phone by tapping the screen or hitting the physical volume buttons. It really helps to keep your hands steady!

I looooove this content sooo much! I will need to rewatch this again and again. I can not believe I just found this video when I have been a subscriber and member of the community for so long, and I watch your content so often (I even play some of your longest playlists over night to help my newly anxious older dogs sleep through the night.)

There's usually a grid or rule of thirds ruler in the camera settings. this can help align your artwork when photographing and avoid that warped edge effect.

If natural light from a window is your only option you can use a large piece of wax paper to help filter harsh light on bright sunny days for example.

thank you for this helpful info. i have a lot of trouble with glare on dark paintings. i use photoshop elements. it does a great deal of what photoshop can do and it's a buy once thing $100.

My oil paintings are heavily impastoed and incorporate sculptural elements. Any advice for very textured art (for me that would be oil paintings and ceramic sculptures which have a lot of textured and layered glazing)? I'm never quite satisfied with the final result. Either they don't convey the texture enough or convey it so much that the image gets a little lost.

I wonder if the polarizing filter in front of the DSLR lens would be good even if it does not work for glare.... hmm, now I want to try that :) By the way, about the blue tint on the white background. I worked at a ad agency some years back. A collegue got a new computer, and it had an uncalibrated screen. He filled out the black background on a photo, the ad went to print in a hurry and the campaign was pasted all over town, on bus stops etc. Only then did we discover that the black in the photo and the black done in Photoshop was not the same... you could see the edges clearly ;) So the advice to check on different screens is good, or a screen you are sure is calibrated.

Our tutor said use the filters for our digital portfolios as we will never show it for real! I have a proper kit for my photos as my Mum is an artist. She sketches daily, gardens and observes her birds in the garden.

I have my own leaning in the following question, but I do wonder where the line is. 1:17:57 What about nude art, where are the lines in the context of portfolios? It seems female mammary region is acceptable, what about clear female lower genitalia, or a flaccid or turgid male genitalia, or any represented or implied interaction with genitalia? And does the answer change if the art piece is stylized or more abstract, vs more realistic imagery? Some might say “edgy” or “raw” others would have a specific minimum age label at the entrance.

I believe art schools encourage figure drawing/paintings in a portfolio if they're done from life! I think most commonly students will include work made during a figure drawing studio session, where it's clear the point is to study and learn from the model. - Mia, Art Prof Staff
