This is so true, I've narrowed down who I learn from by not only fundamentals but also their skill in what they are teaching and how they teach it that's easy for people to learn and understand

Absolutely! Finding someone who can break it down in a way that's easy to grasp makes all the difference.

As someone who's just getting into art, specifically digital, this was very insightful. Even when looking for tutorials that talk about art don't explain the terminology, the purpose/reason of tools, setting recommendations for programs, resources, etc. I understand it's youtube and creators need views/revenue and sell courses, but it's frustrating and discouraging looking for help as a person with zero background in art but wants to get into it, and 90% of videos aren't for people like me, a beginner. They're for intermediate and professionals who either spent years of their life doing this, or are exponentially good at self learning, to which I suck at both. I learned stuff best with steps and methods like science or cooking, so seeing "just draw and you'll improve," the vagueness of learning/understanding art is what I dislike. Also history as well, don't really see videos (other than old documentaries) on the origin of techniques, and where everything came from, and how we got to what we have today. Thanks for the video. While I still find it difficult to look for a guideline, at least it's slightly easier now for me to navigate through videos. I know most of this sounds a bit entitled, but I just wanted some explanation lmao. This stuff is WAY harder than I expected it would be.

I absolutely agree. One thing I noticed with a lot of artists, especially the younger ones, is that they are really keen on having their own style. But having a "style" really just comes down to how someone decides to break down and bend reality, like deciding what’s the most important for them, what they want to simplify and what they just leave out. For all of this you need to have at least a certain level of understanding of the fundamentals. I don’t think it’s as important for those that really just like to draw on the side and don’t really care about improving, but if it’s your goal to get better, start at the basics, the rest (like your own style) will come on it’s own. And a little off-topic, but I really like your glasses, they suit you very well!
@NeddyisNeddy Жыл бұрын
Yes! I see this over and over and it always reminds me of myself when I was a beginner as I also made the same mistake of worrying and focusing wayyyy too much on style, while neglecting the important stuff. Sometimes I wish I could go back in time and save myself all the unnecessary stress lol 😂. Also Thanks for the glasses compliment! I appreciate it! 😊

I remember reading these “how to draw manga books” as a kid and getting so frustrated that my drawings looked so lifeless and disproportionate. This is why. 😂 Also I always wondered how artists can perfectly replicate art styles outside of their own (if they so chose to) because, from my POV, you’re supposed to practice in your style! The answer was fundamentals.
@NeddyisNeddy Жыл бұрын
Yess, I can totally relate! It's like they promise magic, but it takes time and practice to really get there.That's why I included some of my old drawings, attempting to follow those types of tutorials, as examples in the video, lol. And you're spot on about fundamentals - they're the backbone of any art style. Once you've got those down, you can start playing around and experimenting with different styles. It's all about building a solid foundation! 😊

Nice video. I agree and after a while, I noticed that no knowledge of why a certain technique wasn’t explained or showed somewhat disappointing. I also notice artists linking materials for projects for people who may not truly understand what to do when they have purchased a treasure trove of art supplies they may not be sure to use. Thank you for letting us all know about the pitfalls of KZbin Art tutorials.
@NeddyisNeddy Жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching! I'm glad you agree. It can be a bit disappointing when certain techniques aren't explained thoroughly. Also, I totally get what you mean about artists suggesting materials without clear guidance on how to use them. I think it's important to bridge that gap between having art supplies and knowing how to make the most of them, especially since art supplies can be pretty expensive sometimes.

I watched one of those "how I draw hair step by step" recently because I was having a difficult time wrapping my head around drawing hair. Turns out I already understood how to because I have an understanding of the fundamentals, I just needed someone to explain it to me a different way, lol. So for that reason, I think those kinds of art tutorials can be useful.

This was a great. Ive been trying to learn gouache and I’m amazed about how many KZbin artist with tutorials will say “This is my first time using gouache” or they are all over the place with techniques. Which is fine as long as you acknowledge that fact.
@NeddyisNeddy Жыл бұрын
I'm glad you enjoyed it!☺ I'm not familiar with it, but I hear learning gouache can be a bit tricky, so I totally get what you mean. I agree that artists should acknowledge when it's their first time with gouache or at least provide some context, It helps to understand the learning curve better.

I loved your video, you are very charismatic! I have watched several tutorials and the question really is why it is done, when you understand everything changes. I teach drawing classes to children and it's so difficult to make them understand the theory, they want the results without practicing.

I agree with everything you said. Furthermore, I believe we learn concepts better when we must search for the answers. The amount of effort to build a skill directly determines the amount of result an artist will see. This alone makes shortcuts a waste of time.
@NeddyisNeddy Жыл бұрын
Yup! I couldn't agree more. The process of actively seeking out answers and putting in the effort to master a skill truly solidifies our understanding of it. It's like they say, "The harder you work for something, the greater you'll feel when you achieve it." Shortcuts might seem like a quick fix, but they often end up being a detour in the long run.

I staŕted drawing around age 3 as such i have used multiple text on drawing the best by far is Nicolades NATURAL WAY TO DRAW it’s approach begins assuming you alreadyknow how to see and thdn building on what you do to move into what you can do.
@mafaldamaluka Жыл бұрын
I started drawing not long ago, and I realized this a week ago because I got frustrated with a tutorial that I followed. Some tutorials are amazing. I can paint with color pencils very well, but I do not draw well. And the improvement with the color pencil was because of the fundament tutorial. But as I do not have a lot of time, I end up wasting time doing something easy to do. Is ok, for me. Some curses on Udemy are really good and always have some promotions. And the good approach for me is keeping both. Inspirational when I am lazy, and fundamental when I am more awake. But I assure you that fundamental tutorials, even for me, can make me think about what I learn while I am doing other stuff (like on a bus), so I try to see more of this than the inspiracional one
@NeddyisNeddy Жыл бұрын
Yes, that's a great approach as well! Sometimes we need something low-pressure to keep us going, or just for fun even. At the end of the day, it's all about being aware of when you're making each choice and making sure you're not neglecting one or the other. best of luck! 🤗

When you see a video title like "how to do photorealism, easy tutorial for beginners", run far away. Many of these videos are really just humble-brags. I see this all the time on YT: ten-minute tutorials claiming to easily explain some or other very advanced topic for beginners. It will achieve nothing more than to demotivate you. I found even Proko's channel of very limited value because most of what he has there is so advanced it is completely overwhelming. The other danger with YT tutorials is the sheer number of them: it is an absolutely vast scattershot of topics and subtopics and very often contradictory advice, i.e. one teacher will say one thing, and on another channel another teacher will advise the exact opposite. So what now, because both of them are great artists, but they both insist the way they learned it is better. Also, the longer a channel has been active, the more likely it is that it will contain so vast a number of tutorials that you will have no idea of where to begin, unless the channel in question specifically tells you which ones to start with, or has them all very well organized into playlists. You end up spending two days learning to draw skulls, and then another three learning feet from three different teachers, and then realize you should actually do more gestures, and so you spend three weeks cycling between 30-second, 3-minute and untimed gestures in seven different styles, and so on and so forth. You can go on like that for years and never get very far - I'd know, because that is how it has thus far been with me: every now and then the bug to learn figure drawing bites me, and then it takes me a few weeks on YT to completely lose all interest in it. :D Seems to me beginners should not find tutorials; they should find a course, i.e. a series of tutorials that take you from very basics to somewhat more advanced topics over the course of, say, twenty or so tutorials, that can all be completed in a few months. By the end of that time you will be far from being a skilled mangaka or whatever, but you will have made genuine, visible progress, and will now have a base on which to build by selecting specific topics you need to improve on, and then finding appropriate tutorials for those, or otherwise, to find a more advanced course to tackle. This can be difficult on KZbin, because the only way for people to keep their channels active and keep their followers is to regularly upload new videos, and this inevitably leads to them uploading basically just for the sake of uploading. So on a single person's channel you now find twenty different tutorials on how to draw the head, in twenty different ways - extremely confusing. You need a certain amount of basic knowledge before you'll even know how to choose a tutorial; once you do have that, the huge scattershot that is KZbin actually becomes a goldmine. One more thing I learned: it helps if you have some idea of what you want to achieve. All artists make use of the same basic skillset, but the figure drawing used in various branches of art where figure drawing is done, such as fashion design, manga/anime, western style superhero comics, general humor cartooning, classical figure painting etc. can be very different indeed. Doing Gary Larson-style cartoons requires a very, very different skillset and approach from painting classical nudes in the style of Bouguereau. The basics will help in all of those, but unless you are one of those geniuses who can do anything and everything, then sooner or later you'll probably have to decide what exactly you want to do with your art skills. Constructive criticism on this (otherwise very informative) video: at least to me, the background music made it difficult to follow what you are saying. Turn it down or get rid of it?
@NeddyisNeddy Жыл бұрын
I completely agree! The abundance of tutorials on platforms like KZbin can definitely be overwhelming and can lead to a scattered learning process. A structured course that gradually progresses from basics to more advanced topics is certainly a more effective approach for beginners. However, I find that most of these courses are paid, which might discourage people who aren't sure if they're interested enough to invest money in them yet. I think the biggest advantage of KZbin is the fact that it's free and easy to access, but as you mentioned, you need a certain amount of knowledge to determine which tutorial is best to choose among the rest. Maybe I could create a video in the future sharing my perspective from when I was still a beginner and how I was able to tackle this 🙂. I appreciate your feedback on the background music in the video, and I'll be more cautious when editing future videos. Thanks for sharing your insights!
