I love this play.. run it starting with 11u .. and if runner at 1st goes then throw out at 2nd... but honestly looks like pitcher balks... little bit too much towards the plate. Ty Matt

Thank you for your video Excellent breakdown bro. If an umpire calls it a balk he should be a rookie in the business because the rule is simple and just have to follow it. I am practicing my 45 degree but the most important part is that my first move confuses the runner which I believe is the most difficult and powerful

There is no 45 rule……it’s arbitrary. Depends on the umpire.

It looks like the runner is leading off a little too far, if the rule of thumb is to lead off the same distance that the third baseman is off the base. But that move looks like a balk to me. The umps will probably watch Shields more closely now.

I used this in high school all the time. No one ever expects rightys to do what leftys do to first. The reactions of the players were the best. I lead in pickoffs by a large amount.

Yes, I umpire and look for this to call balk. He starts forward, then down step directly toward bag. BUT, I'm not on a four man crew, so that's hard to see from C position. But that 45 degree thing is BS.

I agree that the step appears to be in the direction of the plate. He also begins to separate his hands while his leg is still up. That's what caught my eye. If he's at the beginning of a windup and separates his hands, he has to complete the pitch.

Question: I was at a little league game, and the runner at third was taking waaaayyyy too big of a lead off. On a ball or strike that the catcher catches, can he rifle it back to third? Or, is the ball dead? The visiting team's coach was counting on say 1 out of 4 pitches to be wild enough, so that they were scoring relentlessly. But on every catch, it seemed the umpire, catcher, and especially the runner on third thought the ball was dead so the runner sauntered back to third and sometimes didn't even tag up on the base.

I’d do this all the time and my third baseman would give me a signal. Got about 5 or 6 successful pickoffs to third. Nobody expects it and it wish they would do it more.

As a pitcher I used to like stepping off the mound then pretend like im gunning it to first then turn glove side immediately and see if I could catch him leaning. Ive seen pretty good success with that play.

That's a straight up balk. His knee crosses behind the rubber and he doesn't step directly towards third. Neither allowed, it's plain deception, the definition of a balk.
