I’m 3 years in and feel like this now. Just sampling everything but don’t know what to just focus on and build upon. The stuff I feel like I like… i don’t get to in rolls often lol.

As a white belt I feel this. I like playing various guard positions from bottom and using pressure to pass. It just took me forever to figure that out. I'm definitely using old man juijtsu for the high calorie grappler crew. It helps slow those young guys dowm a bit. I've slowly started adding things that seem to compliment the very basic game I like to play.

Good for you having the humility to say this, a lot of black belts will tell people that they can't even understand what will work best for them I always found that pretty ridiculous

Thr shoulder crunch was one of the best things I learned at blue belt (purple now) but I just love it, always manage to catch it on most people and it's either armbar or sweep and even at that there's so many other options than just those 2, so trying to explore some of them atm 🙂

Love, and feel, this advice. Triangles always look great, but as a bigger guy who isn't super long, they are a horrible pain for me. Kesa Getame, however, has always felt great, as have arm triangles. So, those are my preferred go-tos.

As a sorta bigger guy too, our legs are strong AF. Figure out how to use em!

I have short legs but I actually love the triangle. I gave up on triangles as a finisher though and I just use it as a control position mostly since anyone with wide shoulders is just too difficult for me to finish, making it easy to shuck my legs off. I'll give it one more try after seeing this though. Maybe take the extra bit of effort to break their base a bit more before locking the triangle in while making sure their arm is all the way across so I can really cover their shoulder.

have you seen the John Danaher video on adjusting the triangle very perpendicular to your opponent with your butt up?
@jamestk6562 ай бұрын
@@alyssondasilva4484 Thanks for the reference. I have but the perpendicular position only marginally works for me since I find that it also make it easier for the other guy to shuck my leg off away from the side I'm already on. The Danaher tip that seems to help me consistently though is to be sure to cover their shoulder first before locking things in to reduce the surface area I need to cover with my legs. I usually end up being perpendicular anyway though since I almost always grab their leg to keep them from slamming me.

I’m spamming lateral raises so you can’t hit triangles on me hehe

My advice to white belts is always just do *something*. Even if it doesn't feel useful right now, it might be very useful later when you fill in some other gaps. Nobody expects you to know anything anyway, so just take some time to drill a technique or two until you feel like you know the basics, then spam it in rolling/positional training until you start hitting it.

Great advice. I’m a gangly grappler who does best with guard and sweeps. Teaching my girlfriend, who is also build long, I figured we’d focus on that until she went to a comp and proceeded to take down, mount, and submit girl after girl. She’s not built for it; she’s just mean

Also, don't throw anything away and not go back to it. You might not get the technique but it might sing its praises after you've learned some new things. Like Chewy said, find the things you feel like you have a knack for and work on those for a bit, if something doesn't click, find something else and come back later.

This second this as fantastic advice. I wrote off several techniques as ones that would never work for me and I now love them and they are part of my A game. I just needed some time for my BJJ to mature before I realized how good they were.
