I used almost that exact list when I picked my flight school :D It's a little bit of a longer drive but because of the condition of the airport and planes, student to instructor/aircraft ratio, cost and friendliness of staff I chose to add that extra 20 min each way to go for flight lessons. I love the staff and get along with everyone and from my first visit doing a discovery flight I knew I had found my school.

I’ve been watching your videos and noticed the ones for student pilots. I’m planning on getting a PPL. I did a discovery flight years ago and am planning on starting flight school in Yohe next year. I’m in McKinney just north of Dallas. I’ve located a few flight schools or CFIs and will see if I can do a discovery flight with each to help with my decision. I’m glad to hear that I can count that flight time. Thanks for the video.

I went to a small part 61 school 5 aircraft 4 instructors and no more than two students to an instructor, it worked great. The mechanics were available for questions and aircraft log books were open to any student to look through. A school with low overhead cost, and transparent maintenance procedures was what i looked for so i wouldnt be a cash cow to keep the lights on in the school and strung along to build some instructors flight time to fast track them to the airlines. I did my ppl checkride at 40.1 hours. Just some things to consider when looking for a flight school.

Great tips! I can't believe this advice is free lmao. Honestly, though, the hardest thing for me when looking for flight schools was finding the cost for the actual training. For me what I found was some flight schools really don't have much transparency when talking about cost. I'm not sure if it is because it varies so much but it sure made the process sketchy for me🤷🏾‍♂️
@74gear
@74gear 5 жыл бұрын
ya I would just get them on the phone and get the prices per hour for the plane and instructor, it shouldn't be a secret.
@HEDGE1011
@HEDGE1011 5 жыл бұрын
Your point about costs is on point, but remember when they quote you a price for a certificate or rating, they're quoting the price for the minimum number of hours they can conduct the course in. Many people fly more than the minimum to obtain a given certificate or rating. If you know what the minimum number of hours is for a program (and the rate or rates per hour), you need to also ask how many hours on average students are taking to complete that course. This kind of pricing gets really egregious in type rating schools (probably not your current focus, but keep it in the back of your mind). You can see advertisements that say get your B-737 rating for $8995 or some such number (that's low), but that's a minimum time curriculum that presumes you're proficient in basic turbojet flying when you walk in the door. Some people can complete it within the program and some people can't. Just some thoughts. I wish you the best in your aviation career! Fly safe!

Great video, I got my PPL at a small flight school in my hometown and transferred to a large aviation university because I bought into the idea that it was objectively the best way to go. After two semesters I am going back home to continue my flight training and do online school. I have learned a lot while being here but it is more expensive and I would much rather be home and save the money. It really is hard to make the decision on where to train. I suggest keeping your options open. You may go somewhere and realize it isn't the right choice and that is okay.

Thanks for including the part about using the G.I. Bill. I'm currently getting out of the military and just got my acceptance to Embry Riddle for the fall. As for using the G.I. Bill for part 141 schools, the G.I. Bill will cover the college portion, however for the flight school portion, you still will have to pay out of pocket. My son chose Thrust Flight in Addison TX. Their zero time to airline program is full time, 6 days a week, 10ish months or so. First class medical is still processing. March ‘24 is the last class of the old tuition… 99,000 plus 6,500 for multi. Now is 105k plus a grand or two on that multi with 10k down. They have 24+ planes all 2020 or newer, a GameBird, and a full motion RedBird. I call it a good value because 1. He can still live at home which saves $850/mo or more on campus housing 2. It’s still half the price of Embry Riddle’s Daytona campus considering he’d leave with two degrees. 3. A fire station is next to the airport so I can trust a rapid response if resources are ever needed (the medic in me thinks like this!)

I looked at Cessna, and Piper. Cessna had beat up planes, was 1/3 more expensive, the lesson materials were a hodge podge, some were even mimeograph. Piper had a better trainer, and got a new one during my lessons. I got to be the first student to fly it. The lesson materials were integrated, uniform in apperance, and came in a nice blue vinyl pouch. The difference was like the difference of a greasy spoon diner, and a burger king. I chose piper.

At KHWD, there were five flight schools to choose from at the time. Two were scary. One never had anybody there. One was owned by a guy who only wanted wealthy students. The last one had plenty of instructors, plenty of planes, reputable mechanics, etc. The only downside was the owner was an A-hole. I interviewed five instructors before I even did my first introductory flight. The instructor I picked was a 65 year old PH.D. astrophysicist. This guy had every rating possible, helicopters too. He'd seen it all. He was really hard on me, but that was what I wanted. Not only did I get top notch training, we became good friends too. Mal has since passed away, but it was a high point in my life.

Many schools push you into twins after the instrument rating for people looking to become airline pilots. I just want a single for the complex and high performance endorsement's. Found one at KAFW (surprised at how few there are or at least advertise). So once all my written work is done will be relocating there for awhile. Visited them once, but will sit down with the Chief Instructor before commitment. My personal experience has been most customer service at FBO's stinks. It's not until you have taken lessons or rented several time's before it improves. Always been a problem in my opinion.

You fly the classic 747? The inset image was the 100 prototype - nitpicking aside great upload in my day the choice was clear, the school that I hung out at for most of my childhood who let me sweep the hangars and wash their aircraft was the one, I rode a bicycle to training and had to train on Samba composite low wings one of the first LSA types certified for PPL and hour building - later on very dodgy 172's and I got 'free' ground school as well

Awesome info im trying to attain as much knowledge about this field as I can. Is a bachelor's really necessary for airline companies, or can you still get hired on with the required flight hours?
@joshualandry3160
@joshualandry3160 4 жыл бұрын
In case you have not found the answer yet, a bachelors is absolutely required if you want to fly for a major airline. If you are fine flying for a regional then most will take you without right now. But do keep in mind you are always going to be less desirable than someone with a degree. Online schools are cheap and a great option to fix this problem.

I’m considering a career change to go fly commercial. I had originally thought I’d get my private license at a local school and then go to a fast track school to finish my training and certifications. When I started to dig a bit more, I discovered I could do most/all of my training at the local schools and I was wondering which direction you’d go. Is it more beneficial to go to a fast track school like ATP or stick with the smaller local flight school?

What are the regulations on colorblindness in pilots? I know you need the ability to recognize colors in order to safely operate the aircraft, but is there a certain allowable level of colorblind? For me, I’m only a little color blind. I only have trouble differentiating certain colors. But I don’t know what the regulations are like. So if you know anything about this I’d love some insight! Thanks! (Love all your videos btw)

I thought it was funny that you mentioned Dallas in your video. I plan on attending American Flyers. Was going to go to ATP, but they did not want to train me. AF took me up in a 172RG with full fuel, we had no problems. Granted I am loosing weight so I can learn to fly and maybe be more attractive to airlines. Most of this school are military guys. I went for my demo flight, found out I was ill prepared even studying Gold Seal ground school.

I'm just starting out with flying lessons and learned how to do a good preflight on the 172. I wondered, how do airline pilots do a preflight? Do you have to get out and check the flaps and ailerons and sump fuel and stuff too? What's a preflight look like for a 747?

well we don't sump fuel on the 74, but I am hoping this year to be able to make a preflight video. No matter what every plane you fly will need a preflight walk around.

A great question! We do a visual inspection and are looking for similar things as you do (cut tires, leaks, loose fasteners, damage, etc.) Obviously some planes are very large and we don't have as much hands-on inspections but there are a number of required items you have to check and we are evaluated on it each time we go to training. As for sumping, maintenance does that periodically on a specified schedule. Though water in fuel is never a good thing, jets are less vulnerable to it than internal combustion engines. The maintenance guys also do their own walkarounds and inspections in maintenance stations and are always a great resource. I know there are some good walkaround videos on KZbin. If I find a good one I'll link it here. (It may not be a 747 though!)

Here in Australia I am about half way through my CPL training with flight training Adelaide the planes are relatively new DA40s which have the G1000 avionics, the whole course has a fixed price which is inclusive of all your textbooks, plane rental, instructor time.etc (zero to CPL is about 90kAUD and can be government funded via a student loan) and there is pretty good availability of both aircraft and instructors, They even have onsite accommodation if you want to live there during your training (but that costs extra and has to be paid out of pocket) Only downside is they won't even think of training you for a CPL unless you can get a class 1 medical certificate (even though a lot of pilots get away with only obtaining a class 2)
