Thank you for explaining in through detail the steps for piping roses. I have done them in the past. More often then not I was not really certain where my petal nozzle should be placed. In addition, what consistency icing should I have. Thick or medium consistency? Thanks again for sharing :)
@CakeDecoratingSchool Жыл бұрын
Hi Laura! so glad you like the tutorial. they look so simple but there really is a lot going on with roses and they do take some practice. I use the same consistency of buttercream for everything, but mine has butter in it which lends a bit more stability and flexibility. If you are using the wilton recipe I would use the stiff/thick consistency for roses.

What tip can I use if I don’t have 104? Should I use 10P1 Or Should I use 14P1
@CakeDecoratingSchool10 ай бұрын
Hi there! There are lots of brands out there and I'm not familiar with this number system so I'm not sure what brand it is, if you let me know I can check it out and let you know what would be your best option. Ideally it should be a teardrop shaped opening and we are using a standard sized tip vs an oversized one meant for larger decorations. Really you could use any petal tip to make roses. Larger ones will make larger flowers and smaller ones will make more petite ones. I hope this helps some and let me know what brand of tips you are using and I'll check them out!

@@CakeDecoratingSchool thank you so much for your reply !! The brand I’m using is “RFAQK”

Hi! Thanks for letting me know I'd never heard of that one before and they have a pretty unique numbering system. From what I can tell your first thought the 10P1 looks like your best option so I would start with that one. The photos they have are from the side and don't fully show the top of the tips but that does appear to be a petal tip. Good luck with your flowers and thanks for sharing!

So, I’ve never done this before and had no idea how much goes into this… I thought I’d easily whip out some pretty cupcakes for a bridal shower and now, this seems too much for my amateur level (& 50-80 cupcakes). 😬 Question: Can these roses be made directly on top of the cupcake?? & any hacks to make that easier? And if your method is best, how do I get them on top of the cupcake and how do they stay put? (I also really prefer cream cheese frosting, but is that not practical for designer piping?) Thanks for the informative tutorial! 🙏🏼
@CakeDecoratingSchool8 ай бұрын
If you've never done a decorative project before roses might be a bit ambitious for that amount of cupcakes. You might want to go with a simpler design. Cream cheese frosting while tasty is not a good option for something like piped flowers as it lacks the stability to hold its shape. This is a pretty standard way to make roses, you might find some others but even if they are doing it a different way you still need to pipe each petal so they are all going to take time and practice. You can sue papers of a flower lifter if you prefer. I like the papers since they make the flowers easy to transfer to a tray and chill, once firm they can be placed on cakes and cupcakes. If you want to see how this happens we have a great 3D rose cake video up that shows us using roses. We also have a video on how to use a flower nail that covers the all the basics and shows placing flowers on cupcakes. These roses are on the small side in comparison to a cupcakes=, so if you piped it directly on a larger surface like that you would end up with the cupcake interfering with your movements and you won't have the same spin as your nail which means it will actually be harder to achieve. you can do larger versions of this type/method of roses on cupcakes but you would need to use a large tip like a 125. Hope this helps and good luck with the project!

what buttercream do you recommend i bought a can of wilton frosting its too loose
@CakeDecoratingSchool3 ай бұрын
we use American style buttercream and as you can see it works for making a wide variety of types of flowers. Wilton makes more than one consistency of frosting. I'm not sure which you got but if you copy the following into your search bar "Wilton Ready-to-Use Stiff Consistency White Buttercream Frosting" you should find what you are looking for. I haven't used in a while but it is was very thick and worked for making roses. It looks like they sell three consistencies now soft, medium and stiff. My guess would be that you've got either the soft for the medium which would give you trouble for piping flowers. Hope this helps.

So do you let this dry and then you can put it on a cake?
@CakeDecoratingSchool Жыл бұрын
we are using buttercream that contains butter rather than shortening so you can place them on a tray and pop them in the fridge to cool. Once they are chilled they will be firm and easy to handle when placing on your cake.
@miskyloo887 Жыл бұрын
So I was piping from left to right, I see you pipe from right to left, does that make a difference? Thanks
@CakeDecoratingSchool Жыл бұрын
I'm right handed so piping this way means that I"m not blocking my own view with my hand. It also means that I can hold the bag and the tip so the frosting comes out unimpeded and the spin of the nail lays the frosting on my flower naturally. If I were a lefty I would do the opposite and spin the opposite direction. I find this the most comfortable way to pipe but I know some people find piping right in front and going the opposite direction more natural. As long as it doesn't interfere with what you are doing and make things harder for you there really isn't a right or a wrong way to do things. Hope this helps!

How do you determine the icing consisity for the rose?
@CakeDecoratingSchool Жыл бұрын
Hi Vicki, I use the same frosting for all of my flowers. We are using an American style buttercream that has butter in it not shortening so you can play with the temperature (a little bit( and also whipping it up to make sure it's light fluffy and spreadable when needed for icing a cake and a little cooler when doing piping tasks. I don't find I need to make different consistencies the way you might need to if you are using fat for the shortening. Hope this helps!

Not quite sure how to answer this question. We use American or simple style buttercream. It's thicker and more stable than whipped heavy cream but I wouldn't describe it as toothpaste like. Hope this helps.

If I do the cone it tips to either side, how do I keep it straight and my hand warms fasg
@CakeDecoratingSchool3 ай бұрын
I always start by making sure that I'm holding the nail level and that my bag with the 12 tip perpendicular to that surface. Then when piping try to focus on pulling straight up. That should keep them from leaning to the side. Not everyone you make will be perfect but you should still be able to make a decent rose even if they are tilting just a bit. Just keep practicing and trying focusing on that first bit while you are working on your roses for now. Hope this helps!

How do you transfer it to the cake?
@CakeDecoratingSchool11 ай бұрын
we pipe on paper so that we can slide them off of the nailed on to a tray. You can then chill them in the fridge, the butter will get nice and hard which means they are then easy to handle so they can be peeled off and placed on your creations how ever you desire. We have some great flower cake designs where we place flowers on cakes if you are looking for some inspiration in our 3D flower cake series.

Can somebody help me?? What kind of frosting do you have to use to make these? I have tried everything, from the kind in the tube to homemade recipes. It is either too soft to hold its shape or too stringy or too hard to get out of the nozzle. What is the secret to this????
@CakeDecoratingSchool9 ай бұрын
If you are looking for an easy store bought solution, I would go with the wilton decorator icing/buttercream. It'a available in most craft stores with a cake decorating section or you can get it on line on in the cake decorating section at Walmart. It is meant for piping decorations and flowers. I would stay away from the icings you find in the baking aisle of grocery stores(like Betty Crocker). it will always be to soft to work with and isn't meant for this kind of decorating. As for home made a variety of types of frostings would work. American(or simple ) style buttercreams like what we are using in the video are a great place to start as they are easy to make but you could also use an Italian or Swiss meringue. If they are to soft/melty it could be a bad recipe, but it could also be that you are working in a environment that is too warm or like many of us have a case of the "Hot Hands". Sometimes it just takes a bit of time, practice and some yummy mistakes to work out the kinks and find the best solutions for your particular needs. hope this helps!

I made American buttercream, but it didn't turn out well😢😢. It became soft and grainy. Can anyone explain why? Because of that, the shapes I made didn’t hold up
@CakeDecoratingSchool3 ай бұрын
If by grainy you mean it started to look separated then I would suspect the recipe has too much liquid and I would try reducing it. If it's too warm then that can also be an issue since the butter will melt as your working or might be too soft if your room is really warm that you are working in.

Do you let the cone dry before piping petals? My vibe flops over when I try to pipe a petal.
@CakeDecoratingSchool Жыл бұрын
I pipe the petals on the cone directly after piping the cone itself. If yours is slumping or tilting you might need a frosting that is more stable or it might be too warm. Usually if mine start to get a bit saggy while I'm working it's because my hands have warmed the frosting too much and it's time to let it cool down or change out what is in my bag. Hope this helps!
