montecarlo seems to only grow for me in loose substrate like fluval stratum - it creeps along and grows but in my sand tanks they take even longer and usually have gotten pulled out by the fish before they can take root and really grow and spread out. i've learned to glue pieces of montecarlo to a small gravel pebble and then bury that into the substrate - takes a little more time but pretty satisfying lol

I think I disagree with this. Prefer separating the plants so they have more room to grow (more light per plant). Also cost less

I was always told (including by Aquarium Co-Op staff) that if you left the plants inside the rock wool and the plastic pot, the roots would rot and the plant would die.

Great advice! Recently bought some Glossostigma Elatinoides and I read you had to take it apart and plant each node individually, that was a tedious project, it didn't work and now I don't have any left as it was all dug up and separated even more. What a pain.

Interesting. I usually buy in-vitro cup (price and availability of the plant). Now I'm planning to pre-grow some in a small container with soil and moist air, without CO_2 these grow really slow.

I did exactly what you said people do and the results were exactly what you said happen...lol. That's why I gave up on dwarf hair grass and micro sword. I have Eco Complete and I'm going to try your suggestion.

This definitely has its plusses and minuses. It can lead to a LOT less frustration since the plant won't uproot, but at the same time, I find the carpeting is often uneven since you have a giant plant mass with spidering growth radiating from it. Will it even out with time? Sometimes yes, sometime no. There is risk either way.

It looks like your're planting in Fluval Stratum. I've planted lots of your baby-tears and micro-sword along with Easy ferts or your root tabs in my Fluval Stratum. However, I've been struggling with fine hair algae that begins to creep upwards on the mound of baby plants covering them and suffocating them. I am at a loss on what to do. I have adjusted my blue light - stopped or restarted dosing ferts - shutting lights off after feedings, etc. But, the fine hair algae keeps growing. Please help!

Make sure you have super strong lighting, too. I've tried them all and every method. Won't work if the light doesn't reach down to the substrate. Otherwise, cool trick!

I had great success using a dry start method for my first carpet, its a dirted tank with a 2 inch sand cap and i just got it wet until there was half and inch of water across the whole bottom and broke the potted hairgrass into 6 chunks that i just spread evenly over the area i wanted planted. i then misted the tank and covered the top in plastic wrap and left it for 2 weeks, it was all rooted and had began to spread very well. I filled it with water carefully and now that its filled with water and a couple weeks have gone by the hairgrass has slowed in growth but has now covered half a 20 gallon in sparce growth. Its in the process of filling in still but its going well, I have no co2 and use an aquarium co op light at max brightness (before i flooded it was 70% because water scatters light). I also have a little bit of dwarf 4 leaf clover in there i got for free since it spread into another plant pot i got from a store, it was left in the dust by the hairgrass out of the water but now they grow at a similar rate underwater. I was kinda aiming for a lawn with weeds in it I guess, the tank also has val, crypts, swords, java fern, and wisteria and is overall doing well. As for fish I have only a misfit in there right now, my last cherry barb from its group for bio load. I plan on adding orange shrimp and more cherry barbs, ill have to ask my local store if they can get females in since where I am they can be hard to find.

I tried this method with 5 pots of Aquarium Co-op dwarf hair grass in my 20L with organic potting soil and a sand cap with root tabs, bright lights, and CO2 injection. It’s been almost 3 months, and I don’t have a single blade of grass outside of the pots yet. Idk what I’m doing wrong.

Do you think this will work with a sand cap too(either Ada or Fluval stanturm under the cap)? That would be a lot easier buy a few of these from you and do it this way. It is going to be a huge tank with a bunch of stems too. So if I can do this for the grass it will save me heartache lol.

As long as the sand isn't too fine, yes this will work with a sand cap. The issue with fine sand is that it is sometimes too dense and compact, and the roots end up suffocating.

The one I know best is maganese, plants suffer problems taking in maganese nutrition with anything above 6.5 PH

All of my tanks are heavily planted and thriving well, but when it comes to carpeting plants, I Just don't get any success and have to remove them as they have died, really would like to have a carpet but after about 7 attempts trying and failed, I guess its Just not meant to be.. 😒

I keep failing with carpeting plants. I've unfortunately got just pool filter sand, mainly due to cost of 300+lbs of sand in my 180 gallon. I recently tried this method and had them melt away again. Tank is 2 years old, and I've reduced the temperature to 82.5°F in the last few months (discus in there so don't want to go lower). Is the temperature an issue here? I've tried multiple different plants to no avail. Started off as trying to keep everything South American, but started branching out as some plants didn't work. For reference, I dose fertilizer regularly, occasional root tabs. 2ft and 4ft Fluval 3.0s giving lots of light (had to cut back to combat too much algae). I've got bigger Amazon Swords propagating, while my red sword failed. My main concern is the low level plants keep failing. Do I just accept this based on temperature? Or accept based on low level substrate?

i've read in discus forums to reconsider carpeting tank since discus behaviour is normally grazers which the carpeting tank won't allow them to find easy and will cause your tank to do more water changes because of the uneaten food since discus already need really good water conditions to begin with.

but if you're still insisting doing it my guess would be try changing the fertilizer brand, I've tried seachem flourish + excel to help with my carpeting but I would never recommend what he does and keep the rockwool in my tank always remove all the wool I can.

No. I am sorry. I prefer the traditional method of splitting the plant into smaller parts. I managed to grow it even though i have a pleco and 2 loaches.
