I'm working on it, too. And will try setting them out during the summer. It will probably throw them into a different schedule, but they are so pretty -- no matter what time of year!

Consider picking up a couple extras (wait for a sale?) to grow in the garden next summer, too.

It's been very dreary here in our area of Wisconsin for about a week now, can't wait to go out and buy an Amaryllis to brighten things up!

Exactly, Colleen! I just heard from another listener in southern Tennessee... she plants her bulbs outside. While it might be a tad cold for you, another listener from Alaska said she sets her bulbs outside in pots over the summer to blook. Anyway, the Tennesse gardener said, "Thanks for your video on amaryllis bulbs. I appreciated your tips, especially the one about urine, I had not heard that before. I think I will try it with some of my house plants. I live here in the southern part of Tennessee, and though we get snow and even down in the single digits for a day or two at a time in the winter, I have found out that I can plant Amaryllis bulbs outside and heavily mulch them and they will come up every year. I probably have 20 different ones outside right now, along with five or six that I keep in pots so that I can have them in the house during the winter. Appreciate all your tips!"

Great news about your amaryllis. I have 5 of them "curing" for next year. I'm excited. I'd love to find a source for new colors. As for comfrey, I ran the dried leaves/stems through a used food processor... will add to all my hanging baskets and containers. Happy gardener to you!

Thank you Marion! for expounding the benefits of Urine as an plant superfood. Humans, as the only species of land mammal who pees into water, have fertilized fresh and inland salt ponds worldwide with with excess nutrients from the runoff of NPK+++ and created an overgrowth of aquatic plant life at the expense of other life forms. If more of us intentionally reserve our naturally sterile pee for indoor and outdoor vegetation instead of the toilet bowl, diversity rises! It's easy and satisfying practice using a yogurt container as collection and mixing vessel. You being the compost queen, can you advise how to incorporate urine into the composting process??

Hi Timothy! I can share what we do here at our household... we collect pee and simply carry it out to the compost bins and pour it on in. Or, we sprinkle (!) it over our leaf bin... or when my husband is working outside and needs to pee, I direct him to the bin with the most active compost pile. In other words, not too exacting a recipe but it works! I also use it on mature seedlings, containers of tomatoes, hanging baskets, rhubarb...

Thanks for this video. I have grown amaryllis previously, but this year 3 out of four have produced leaves no flowers. The fourth one has not sprouted anything since I brought them all out of 2 months of absolute darkness. All bulbs healthy, in pots not too deep in soil. Outside in their pots last summer did not fertilize( did not know I should. My plan is to keep them in south 6:52 facing window until warm enough to go outside where I will plant them in the ground, in hopes that they will absorb some nutrients and produce flowers for next year. Will this work, do you think ?

Hi Melody, It's not unusual for an amaryllis bulb to not produce flowers... it can be the result of many reasons, from how and when it was harvested prior to market to, it is simply taking a break, resting up, or storing energy for a "show" later. Here is what a friend of mine does with her amaryllis: After the blooms and leaves fade, she trims them to just above the bulb and sets them in a dark corner of her living room. There they sit. She does not water them until early November! She has one bulb that has bloomed for 25 years! For me, 2 of the bulbs did not bloom. Just leaves. I'll let them rest, then put them outside for a couple months, then bring them in. I don't really have a totally set pattern or schedule. Where do you live so I understand your weather?

Are Amaryllis] poison or dangerous for my house cats?🐈
@TheUpBeetGardener
@TheUpBeetGardener Жыл бұрын
Hi Colleen, I put this together for you... Unfortunately, Colleen, the answer is yes-amaryllis is considered toxic to both cats and dogs. While amaryllis is not as dangerous as lilies, amaryllis can still make your furry pal pretty sick if ingested. A toxin known as lycorine is to blame for this reaction in cats. You can find lycorine in every part of an amaryllis but the chemical is most concentrated in the bulb. What Are The Signs Of Amaryllis Poisoning In Cats? If you suspect your cat has nibbled on an amaryllis, be on the lookout for the following signs: Vomiting, Diarrhea, Abdominal pain, Excessive drooling, Loss of appetite, Lethargy, Tremors, Low blood pressure, Respiratory depression What to do if you think your kitty has dined on amaryllis: Don’t panic. Amaryllis poisoning is rarely fatal in cats. And unless your pet eats a substantial amount of the flower, her odds of a full recovery-even without veterinary intervention-are incredibly high. If you catch your kitty in the act, the first thing you should do is remove any plant matter you see from her mouth and/or fur. Then, call your vet. If your cat does wind up needing treatment, the sooner it’s started, the better.
