Thanks for the info! I live in Southern New Jersey where I have a ton of bamboo trees. However, I had to chop them down because they’re growing into my neighbor’s yard. But because of this video, I’m going to build a barrier and grow them again because not only are they gorgeous to look at, they also provide maximum privacy and work as a great sound barrier.

Thanks this is great! We dont have any running bamboo, as we are in the tropics and it goes nut here. I think for your colder climate, your running bamboo wouldnt have gone too nuts - I think its the heat and humidity that fuels it. My clumping bamboo is going strong and I learned how to prune it back from your wonderful video. Thanks again Barb

Mix in a LOT of old oak leaves or any leaf you have when planting and that will be like liquid gold for them. The roots will shoot through it and promote Mychorizal fungus and strong roots. I put a half a trash can full of leaves in every hole per plant. Great job thanks for sharing!!

WRONG. I did it because I like doing tutorials. I've been to the Bamboo Gardens exactly two times. Zero pressure and extremely knowledgeable and good prices and healthy plants. Can't beat that. ;)

We planted black bamboo with this method, sinking a double-thick layer of extra-thick rhizome barrier in a full circle, metal clamps on the overlapped edges, etc. 2 years later, the little buggers escaped underneath the 30" deep barrier and ran wild. It's cost $4k so far to get it fully dug out, and it was only part-way mature. The rhizomes that pop up over the top are easy... but they can and will go deeper than the traditional 17-20" listed by the pros.
@myboringchannel10 жыл бұрын
That is actually not the recommended method because you did not leave a side open for root trimming. The bamboo will try to run deeper if it if it is completely boxed in. Bamboo naturally likes to stay near the surface so will try to run along the surface first.

***** I actually replaced the running bamboo with some clumping bamboo. It was doing REALLY good. It never escaped, but I never actually had real peace of mind about the project. I had it contained as well as anyone could I suppose. But people like Gary Diamond (below) always kept my mind working and eventually I dug out the rhizomes and took them back to where I bought them and he traded me the rhizomes for some healthy new clumpers - Robusta and Scabrida. I'll post a video of them soon. Those two varieties still get quite tall (around 15 feet) and very dense -- even more dense than the Spectabilis.
@myboringchannel9 жыл бұрын
It was a lot of maintenance. I was constantly in a state of worry about it. I kept telling myself all was well, but I had visions of it getting out and me having to pay $$$$ for someone to eradicate it from my yard. I also though that it might be difficult to resell the house if someone else didn't like it. The clumping varieties I bought were Robusta Fargesia (check out this link - www.bamboogarden.com/Fargesia%20robusta%20Green%20Screen.htm) and Fargesia Scabrida (www.bamboogarden.com/Fargesia%20sp.%20'Scabrida'.html). Thank you for your reply. Perhaps You may be able to answer a question for which I haven’t had a good answer. I want to plant bamboo in my property in upstate NY by Lake Champlain -I want to know what kind of bamboo is allowed to grow in the state. Then, I’m interested in a bamboo that I can harvest and use it in personal, small, no-comercial projects. Given the nature of my property, non-contained bamboo is not a mayor issue, although I don’t want it to take over. So, what kind of bamboo would you recommend according to the above info. Is clumping bamboo an option to get stalks long enough to use on a variety of projects? Thanks

Our place is parked on, essentially, pit-run-gravel...river bed rocks. ..Digging that, is epically hard to do. Only a few hand tools work, like a mattock paired with a pick, or, a pointed hoe....and hours of back-breaking labor. Is there such a rentable machine that can trench deep enough into that? If we planted clumping bamboo, would that help keep it contained to a fence line? Will a bamboo hedge last as long as, say, a yew, or other type of hedge?

+bobby harvill people talk about it like it's a wild animal because once you let it go for a while, it's like one. With proper containment and regular care, however, it's pretty easy to maintain and control. Personally, I wouldn't rely on a mower to contain a large, healthy hedge of running bamboo. I'd use a proper root barrier or put it on a mound where it can be root trimmed.

through reading the comments I saw you ripped this out? was it growing out of control? I live in Connecticut and they have a law about not planting this within 40 feet of property lines. I feel like with a proper barrier around the full area I would be OK as long as I monitored any roots growing over my plastic edge.. but I just started research on this today. what was your experience? thanks for your help
@myboringchannel8 жыл бұрын
No, it was not out of control. It was very well contained. I did it right and I guarantee it would still be contained today. It's just a plant after all and if you plan ahead well enough, you'll be fine. The problem I was having is that I just worry about things. I was constantly worried that something might get out and get out of control although I don't think it would have. I also thought about re-selling the house, and with a very mature grove that might put potential buyers off in the future. The root ball on these groves gets so monstrous that once a grove gets mature, it is VERY hard to get rid of it. So . . . I just didn't have peace, but no, it never got out, and no, it wasn't hard to control at all because I planned ahead. But it was still a young grove . . .
@kevingerace97878 жыл бұрын
That makes sense... I feel like I would do the same. Especially in CT now if it grows in anyone else's yard it's a fine of $100 per day, and the owner is also responsible for all damages. After watching your video and thinking more about it I may make large planter boxes out of railroad ties. 6' wide 3' deep and 4' tall, and then install proper drainage and line the inside with plastic. That way I could contain them but hopefully they'd still have enough area to grow big. I'm have some pine trees removed in my backyard to extend my yard to the property line but that is going to expose some ugly condos behind me with bright parking lot lights every night, and I want it all to disappear since I'm putting a pool in. You think you had an ugly eye sore of a neighbor. _lh3.googleusercontent.com/nClBFqvlgrORiYZ_2WFkre7l5G8g7sst9wUSYaT_3nN3vRDios1n8O6XLg5419B_SiTadiKGpw_

@@myboringchannel I must not be understanding something. Wouldn't cutting the roots in the channel be the same as cutting the roots that are deflected upwards by the barrier? How would that impact the root growth in the area where the roots are intact and free to grow? Isn't that where they'd become overgrown?

@@myboringchannel I thought about it a bit more and it now makes sense to me that some of the roots that hit the barrier are going to be deflected back in the direction they came, which could lead to them ping ponging between the two sides of the barrier, so to speak. I'm now wondering if this same practice of leaving one side an open trench should apply to a much bigger area...? I planted a hillside with running bamboo that is bounded at the top by 8" thick concrete retaining walls much deeper than 36". The bamboo doesn't really seem to grow uphill anyway. However, I'm thinking I need to do a 36" barrier on the sides and along the base of the hill. The area is approximately 60' in the uphill downhill direction x120'. Or is the area too big for getting root bound to be a concern? I read somewhere on the internet that bamboo groves have a healthy life span of about 60 years at which point you have to dig them up and start over anyway, although I don't know how accurate this information is.

Where is the follow up video? A few years later it would be nice to see the results.

No matter how deep you dig the root will eventually spread every were as far as 20 to 40 feet. If you want to protect it from spreading every where, make concrete gutter first it will definitely stop the root from spreading.

until the concrete cracks anyway... which it will eventually. and then he is FUCKED.

Would not be able to do that legally in the UK as the neighbours can claim right to light and the bamboo would be required to be moved

So I couldn't plant tall trees in my own yard? Stupid. Glad I don't live there.

You know when you mow your lawn any bamboo shoots that are in your lawn that get mowed down die so you shouldn't have much of a problem containing them
