I've played for 45+ years and I find that picking quite difficult. But it is so very beautiful a cycling melody! Mark is a gifted musician. Thank you for this sir!

Really great tutorial. One little input from me would be that the "super slow" picking part wasnt slow enough, i thought it went rather fast. Had to use youtube function to 0,5 speed. Or its just me who suck 😂

Your guitar playing is great, I saw you at the guitar show last weekend and enjoyed it massively. When I left the show I had a memory in my head. Many years back I am sure I had a physics teacher (Marden High) who I am certain was called "Mr. Caffrey". He played guitar and was from memory a nice bloke. Was this you?

Hi. Thanks for that - really made my day. I love what I do with the music 🎸🎸 so if any of that rubs off, then we have all won! I must have a clever doppelganger - I definitely wasn't a physics teacher😂 - definitely not clever enough! Thanks again for the support - it really makes a difference.

Great tutorial, thank you so much. May I ask, for those who, like me, are somewhat "analytical", I you could illustrate the strings you hit, for instance with tabs progressing with your playing? Maybe it is not that simple, so, anyway, wonderful job!
@philcaffrey
@philcaffrey Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for your comments. With the tabs/strings question, it's an interesting one because MKs playing is so nuanced and varied that it's not an easy job to break it down into tabs. My approach when learning to play his music was to try to translate what I heard into the sound. In other words, my biggest learning tool is my ears - if I can get it to sound right, it's right - if it doesn't sound exactly right, I need to think about trying something else. That said, there is still room as you say for some technical teaching in the vids. What I will bring in to future videos is more of a look at what strings are being played and when, particularly on the complex picking tunes. Thanks for the suggestion - really helpful.

Hey thanks for the great tutorial!! Can you also give us the details of the amp setting? I’m struggling to produce the same sound
@philcaffrey
@philcaffrey 9 ай бұрын
Hi. Thanks for that - much appreciated. I use a Yamaha THR30ii amp - it's a small modelling amp but you can use similar settings with any amp. The first thing is to add a little compression. I have my bass and mid about 12 o'clock with treble at 1 o'clock. I use a tiny bit of spring reverb alongside a bit of delay ( not too much - just enough to beef up the reverb). The main impact on the sound comes from the pickups - I played this on my 90s American Strat with the stock pickups - I think I used just the neck pickup for this vid, but position 1 or 3 tends to be my "go to" for this type of sound. Any decent strat-style single coil pickups should do a decent job of this. Hope that helps. 👍

FYI The two note intro to the F chord played at 0:47 only happens on every second repeat, meaning the riff is twice as long as it seems in this video. The chords have to be played twice to get the full melody.
@philcaffrey
@philcaffrey Жыл бұрын
Yep, that's right. This video teaches the chords and the fingering for both hands. I have assumed that viewers will know the song well enough to complete the right number of requests. Thanks for clarifying.

Thats Sounds amazing! What setup did you use?
@philcaffrey
@philcaffrey Жыл бұрын
Hi. Thank you so much for the comment. The guitar is a 90s American Strat with bridge\middle pickups selected and a Yamaha THR30ii which is a great little house amp. I had some plate reverb and a tiny touch of delay to give body to the sound and I used some on board compression which I can dial in on the amp. I think the secret to and sound is having good pickups and then finding their sweet spot - I love the sound of a Strat in bridge\middle and I don't it doesn't need a lot of FX to really make it shine. Hope that helps. Thanks for taking the time to comment - it really makes my day. What set up do you use?

Yes. I recently bought a mex. strat. It sounds quiet nice but i have a humbucker as the bridge pickup, so i will just use the one in the middle. Sound good for now.

No tabs ?
@philcaffrey
@philcaffrey 10 ай бұрын
Hi - thanks for being in touch. I don't make tabs for these videos because my preferred approach has always been ears first. I get much better results if I use me ears to work through a song or riff and then translate that to my fingers. I think of tabs as a short cut that leaves out a lot of nuance - I would really encourage you to use your ears rather than tabs - you'll get better results in the long run.
