That fingerpicked ending is one of the most beautiful things ever written. I saw them 9th row center in '92 and it was very emotional for me during that part.

That’s an understatement. The melody is addictive. (That’s the best way I could explain it.) so creative, and hauntingly beautiful!

I remember when I learned this riff, listening again and again and watching the live version (live on the night), playing the chords until be comfortable with it. But I never could get the sound and the elegance that Knopfler does even playing (I think) more or less the right notes. I lack some knowledges more that it seems you have, nice job.

Thank you! By the way, Phil Palmer, a guitar player on On Every Street Tour, played exactly what Mark played, note for note, with only difference he didn't use the "thumb-over-the-top" thing in his part. So at least two people managed to play it back then, so you can do it, too.

Pavel, it's really helpful how you name the chords as you play them. Singing the melody as you play, also, is really instructive. Nice work!
@PavelFomenkov

Thanks. Yeah, I love to name all the chords, because when you learn many songs you realise how chords can be similar in every song. It's like 20 main chords in 99% of the songs and 1% of unique ones.

I have been given an electric guitar and I was thinking of songs I'd like to learn first. So here I am. I only found out recently that Mark had Phil Palmer play the solo all day in Air Studios in London. They chose the best take of the hours played and it's of course Phil on the album.

i would just like to comment on all your videos. i dont watch per say to learn all these songs, and from the live cast i saw of you. i totally understand how you feel about doing this and your honesty. obviously you enjoy it very much in the context you do it in, and how much time it takes for some of the tunes to learn all the nuances, which you do so well. i learn a lot just about song structure, One of Marks maney talents....just the right things and chords .It just has to come from within. I totally agree with your comments on ragpickers dream also. just knows right where to put that special somethin, others might not come upon. Too, he has such excellent recordings with British Grove, and all incredible musicians in their own right that really pull what he does all together. i am singer songwriter, so that is where i spend most my time. i learn a lot about chord choices and why, and the right amount of simplicity, which is a tough balance in it's own right. videos straight and to the point with you no frills, just the facts. wonderful audio on your videos too, which makes them so pleasant to watch...Great Job!!! with any of the guitars you use, even the little Martin. is that standaed e tuning or or same 4th tuning etc but with the low E another note because of small size? Good vocal clear quality.......i wish all the best with all your endeavors, and may better times for us all in the future!. beautifully done, all the vids.

Hi Pavel great video. Knoffler does not slide up to the 5th fret. he just plays high E. Knoffler loaths to move his hands any more than absolutely necessary, it is one of his self declared idiosyncracies, so he always avoids slides up and down the neck. Check videos and you will see him staying on the first 3 frets.
@PavelFomenkov
@PavelFomenkov 10 ай бұрын
I'm not sure what you are talking about. Just checked out the Basel 1992 recording and the camera clearly shows Mark sliding and fretting the 5th fret on the 2nd string with his little finger right at the start of the riff. In this situation, it's awkward to play open string I think. Mark did, hoverer, play open string in recent tours. So you must've been referring to this. I agree, and actually talk about it in the video - the melody is king here, and the way you deliver it doesn't really matter. Mark simplified the riff for recent tours.

I think this is a good video and explanation, but if you had only added a bit more detail about the picking pattern it would have been super useful. I found myself slowing down the video to 0.5x to see how you were using your right hand. Maybe because I'm an amateur guitar player, but hey..
@PavelFomenkov

Thank you for the feedback! I'm not a teacher so any feedback really helps me to develop my teaching skills. I don't know that really slow version would help though, as in perfect case scenario you got to be able to pick out everything no matter how fast it was played, but yeah. I just tend to put as much information as possible in my videos so not to make it 30+ minutes long and probably can't do it without some tradeoffs.

I honestly don't mean to offend you but I have no idea how everyone's getting it after this video. I just can't get it done. You play different things than there are in the tab and I just can't figure out how to do it like you do it in the video. It always drives me crazy, no matter which instruction for On Every Street I look for. This song is apparantly my limit.
@PavelFomenkov
@PavelFomenkov 6 жыл бұрын
Not offending it all, of course I can't say my version is the best lesson on KZbin, but you said it here - from all the lessons mine require a lot of confidence in your playing, so you can always return after gaining some more experience or ignore it alltogether. Just keep playing and you'll realise how simple this song actually is. Not advanced stuff for sure. By the way, I play exactly what tab shows, because otherwise I wouldn't include it anyway.

@RNRS001 I'm with you man. I love these videos, but when it comes to learning from them I always feel as if I missed the first few critical classes in the start and now everything is hard to get. It's like you missed the intro to tensors classes and now have to sit through general relativity all semester. Here's a concrete example of my challenge in this video - at 2:02 I am so on board with Pavel but by 2:14 I am thrown off the wagon. I agree with his response... I think these tunes require an effortlessness while playing the guitar. Something I still don't have. I can play Wish You Were Here note for note, bends and all but flicking and picking needed here, that ain't workin'. :) Someday...
