At first i thought the intro was a slowed down version of the original.. looks like you’ve got the perfect knopfler tone there!

Once you unlock the mystery behind the way a riff was born it makes sense. Most guitarists compose by happy accidents not conscious note choices, so you have to find where their fingers would have landed.

Ah, brilliant. Thanks Jonathan, really appreciated. The first "proper"albums I bought as a teenager were DS 1 & Communiqué. Never looked back. I still joke that MK taught me guitar - sitting in front of my dad's old turntable with his ancient classical guitar picking out the odd note - there was no better musical education in my view. 👍👍

Gosh darn that Cm to Bm is quite hard for a beginner like me, but I think if i keep fine tuning it I might get it down, and the finger picking is just.. Beautiful. Im very suprised I can even come close to the recording now, thanks to you. Thank you Phil!

Saludos! And thanks for taking the time to comment and for your support. I love Argentina by the way. I was lucky enough to visit in 2020 - My daughter was studying in Buenos Aires. Loved the city and the people and we visited El Chalten and Perito Moreno - what a beautiful place you live in. Thanks again.

Mark Knopfler is left handed, so his strong hand is on the fingerboard and those chord slides are easier for him. I think it’s a big part of his overall sound and playing style that us right handeds struggle with.

Hi. Thanks for your kind words. On this video I used a little bit of compressor (any will do) plus a touch of plate reverb. The rest is all tone from the pickups and amp. The guitar is a '95 Strat and the amp I use for videos is a Yamaha THR30ii which is fantastic for home use and it connects via usb to the computer for recording.

Thank you very much for these helpful tipps and tricks on one of my alltime favoutrits! What is evenly impressive to me is that tone of your strat - how do you get that? Obviously the biggest part is using the typical MK fingerpicking, but are there some guitar effects or special pickups, or is it the software you´re using? its actually really rare to find someone on YT that sounds as close to MK :) greets from Germany

Hi! Thanks for taking the time to comment - that's very kind. I recognise your YT name as being from a certain classic Dire Straits song. 👍. As to the tone from the Strat, it's just a mid 90s American Strat with stock pickups. I use a clean setting on my Yamaha THR amp with a little gain for "bite" and some basic reverb and echo delay for body. You are spot on - there is a huge amount of tone that comes from the fingers - it's very hard to define, but I think just comes with practice over a long time. I think that the biggest weapon in getting good tone is actually the ears. I have always done everything by careful listening and imitation until it sounds right. I never use tabs to teach or to learn - I think they get in the way of the ears in a funny sort of way. There's no quick solution, but it's fun being on the journey. Hope that helps. Thanks for your support and happy practising!

@@philcaffrey Thanks sir, that helps 🙏🏼 I always learned - and still do - these good old straits songs by using my ears and searching for helpful camera angles and shots of MKs hands on tons of different YT Vids to get as close as possible. Regarding my nickname: well, I guess I listened a little too much to "In The Gallery" when I picked the nickname. Hehe!
