Does the player need to go through a minimum number of squares? Otherwise why would you not just avoid the monsters and go from one corner to the adjacent one?

Because you wouldn't get any points that way. You need the most points to win, and the only way to get points is to defeat monsters.

Considering Wil has initiated legal action against Geek & Sundry, probably not soon.

Probably not ever. Wil refuses to work for Legendary (the company that owns G&S) and they own at least a portion of the copyright. Until Wil can get that resolved we're stuck with this second rate version of the show.
