This was probably the best explanation of both the moeller technique and the finger technique that I’ve seen. I especially appreciate how you talked about in real-world practice, these are not strictly separate techniques but are blended together. One problem I am having when using the finger technique is I can’t seem to get both hands to work properly when I start to offset one hand to perform a “true” two handed single stroke roll. Individually, I can do the technique quite fast, and when I play with both hands in unison I can also play fast, but when I offset one hand to perform a real roll my hands fall apart. Do you have any suggestions for working through this problem?

Brilliant!! Never thought about the shoe thing. I've been trying to think how I could practice in my office here at work and a pad wouldn't work out but the shoe thing will!

Thanks for emphasizing how much practice and time this requires to learn! I watched a handful of videos and thought I could get used to this in a day or two, by simply knowing the mechanics involved. Not so! I was starting to worry that maybe drumming just wasn't for me. I've been at it for about a week, and only now is it starting to feel like a comfortable motion. Speed & uniformity is still under construction, though!

Hi Mike, thanks for the clearly explained techniques on Moeller and finger control! In the song by System of a down “Jet Pilot” in the verse do you think John is using the moeller technique to play the eighth note pattern?
@MikeBarnesDrums8 ай бұрын
Cheers, yes - the accent pattern is more varied than the simple down/up shown here though.

How about the American Grip?
@MikeBarnesDrums7 ай бұрын
Not really a different grip IMO, just a slightly different rotation of the hand. Nothing against it at all, always just slightly found the stick comes down at more of an angle in that position which I felt I didn't want/wasn't helpful. Great if it works for you though. Cheers.
