The thing that stands out with Mike Barnes is you can actually see the joy in his eyes as he teach. That makes students like me feel more motivated to learn. He diligently teaches the best technique step by step and makes sure his students understand the technique slowly but surely. Thanks Mike. YOU'RE THE BEST!

Thank you for this video. And thank you for videoing it close up from the side like you did so that your grip and your finger technique shows up well. One problem with so many instructional drum videos is that no one makes the effort to try to get a close up of what they are actually doing with their hands. This video is very very helpful!!

4:30 to get straight to the play-along part for returning viewers. Also made a little error near the end - the paradiddle challenge is along to ACDC's "Let There Be Rock", rather than "For Those About To Rock" as I said - kzbin.info/www/bejne/aZeVmGeIgsubiZI :)

I'm a big fan of your lessons, as well as your style of teaching and there's no doubt your enthusiasm really comes through. I'm not sure why, but for me anyway, it's the double (tap) stroke that's always the limiting factor --- not the upstroke or the downstroke. Try as I might with attempting Moeller or any other approach, my paradiddles are nice and smooth at lower speeds, but once I hit around 150bpm I'm really just muscling my way through. That tension of which you speak is always there when I try to accelerate.

I've been working on similar, but using the first stroke of the double as the up stroke. Interesting results.

I have watched you again in slow motion and have seen that you also do not use your little finger (I think) with the diddles I always doubt whether or not to use it but I think it is quite difficult with the German grip and you hears different opinions about this but as always great lesson and motivating teacher top !!! translation is via google so if there are errors blame google! LOL

Thanks Mario! On the whole I am using my little finger on the diddle (I'm intending to at least!) and indeed on the other strokes too. Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment, and I'm really glad if these videos have been helpful for you. Cheers man!

@@MikeBarnesDrums thank you for the many good videos and good tip to use the Moeller Technique my Paradiddles were always out of balance because I always played my tap too hard with my right hand (strong hand) so the reminder to use the moeller technique for that will certainly help. thank you !

When you do the "RR" and "LL" of the paraddidle, do you also use incorporate the technique you use with your fingers when doing double stroke rolls?

The whole point of a paradiddle is to accent on the toms whilst keeping a share roll going. Why would you play it all on the snare when you can just use a 2 stroke roll.

When I studied with Chad Wackerman he really stressed not to accent every downbeat like you are. I think you should demonstrate without accent. You can still play upstrokes without such an obvious and heavy downbeat.
@MikeBarnesDrums
@MikeBarnesDrums 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Villaboy, thanks so much for watching. Vey cool that you studied with Chad Wackerman. The idea of this video is to demonstrate one good way of playing the paradiddle which I’ve found very useful - as 16ths with the accent on the beat, as traditionally notated in the PAS drum rudiment list, seen here: www.pas.org/resources/rudiments (It’s number 16) And as played in the audio demo they provide: www.pas.org/docs/default-source/audio-library/Single_Paradiddle.mp3?sfvrsn=0&sfvrsn=0 As I say it’s one good way of playing it, and if you’re going to put the accent in, what works for me is using the Moeller strokes to achieve that smoothly at speed, as I demonstrate here. You make a good point though that it’s perfectly possible to play it without the accents, and indeed that how I’m playing it here isn’t the only way, or even the best way to play to play a paradiddle, it’s just for me a nice chance to practice the rudiment itself and the Moeller strokes, and for me helps get a nice relaxed flow going when playing it on the kit. It’d be a good idea to also practice it without accents (and therefore without the Moeller up and down strokes, just taps), as well as with the Moeller strokes but with less strong accents/less dynamic contrast. Cheers man! Thanks for taking the time to comment.

@@MikeBarnesDrums No problem I only commented as your description said smoother paradiddles so adding the accent that prominently doesn't make it smooth so it may be misleading for students. I do enjoy your videos.
