When I first got a Hulusi it was cheap and poor quality. I thought it was actually broken but it wasn't - I wasn't blowing hard enough to get different tones. Now I am getting better I have a few different Hulusis but still have a slight problem with the 'quacking' sound at the end of notes due to my technique. When they are advertised as three octaves that includes the drone pipes so you can't manually finger a full 3 octaves.

@hindisikhnewaalaa depends if the note is smooth because there're two types. It's like a harmonica when you draw it plays the same note and when you blow it plays the same note. but if u just get a CAR HORN like note then that means ur Hulusi the blade inside is leaking too much air or is broken. Hey thanks so much for this awesome video...my Hulusi doesn't have a hole on the left pipe like yours and most of the ones I've seen. I've managed to get different pitches by drawing or blowing air and by overblowing like a European traditional flute. Any thoughts?

I'm pretty sure that's not the case.. I probably bought some kind of a touristic version of it, 'cause it doesn't sound right at all. Anyway, it will be a nice decoration in my living room now...

@ciajsia Sir, I am very grateful for such a prompt answer. But allow me to insist: this hulusi produces DIFFFERENT notes, blowing and drawing, and they are all quite nice! Sadly, the instrument can only produce six notes in all, according to a crazy random pattern. Where did you obtain your plastic Hulusi? Perhaps that is where I should start in earnest.

@mryang91 Thank but my hulusi is a 2 octave flute. It just making one sound like a bunch of car honking at each other. It doesn't go like do re me fa la ti...it is a very cheap hulusi that probably explain it. got it for $30 buck...buy cheap get cheap quality....

I have a hulusi with cracks in the goard. Anyone know if it is possible to keep this from spreading and damaging the flute any further? Glue or epoxy maybe?

my hulusi which my aunt bought for me in vietnam..has 6 holes on the centre tube only (1 on the back)...the method book i bought shows 7 holes...i wonder why...

Hey ciasiab, i bought a 2 Octaves Gourd Flute Hulusi from Ebay from Interactchina, but when i blew on it, there is just one sound coming out. I tried to block out the back hole too, but it wouldn't go like do re me fa la... I don't know why, but doesn't you or anybody know what went wrong with it? please tell me T_T

There is no such thing, unfortunately, what is called an octave is the number of pipes, it just means both drones work instead of one being ornamental.

year10k, I have both of Ciaj Sia's album. Which songs exactly are copied? Give me the title of every song that is copied and tell me who is the orginal singer and the title of original song? I would like to compare them. I've only heard his remixies that has the same classic lyrics with a different music only on his soundclick page. Are you sure you buddies were not rip off? Did they buy Ciaj Sia's CD from him in person or from someone else?

does somebody know how to clean the hulusi? i just bought one from china but im afraid of playing it yet because i dont know how to clean the humidity

I made sure mine was described as detachable so all I do is gently pull the pipes out of the gourd. Mine is plastic so I could get it into the country and keep it clean by washing it. Otherwise you have to hang it upside down and let it air out and dry. Don't expect to be able to play it for very long - it does depend on the weather, but they can become unplayable very quickly if its humid, and/or you produce a lot of saliva in your breath
