How to Play Jason Voorhees in Dungeons & Dragons (Friday the 13th Build for D&D 5e)

Today we have a build for Jason Voorhees in D&D 5e! If death isn't you thing, or at least not your own death, this is the perfect build for you! You'll have enough bulk to walk forward menacingly, while shrugging off everything that's coming at you.

Honestly this is one of the more intimidating builds you've ever made. An unkillable monster with almost every damage resistance under the sun and a ridiculous health pool that you never see coming, kills one of you pretty much instantly with a sneak attack, and then just rage frenzies at you until you're dead and he's immobilized. Yeah that's... very Jason Vorhees, actually..

Zealot is really cool, but its capstone, as good as it is, is at 14, which this as written doesn't get to. Zealous Presence is really good for parties, but not so much for rogue/sneak characters. Warrior of The Gods is outright useless for Revenants, too, since your resurrection stuff is already handled. However, Divine Fury is just more damage and another damage die, which goes great with crit fishing, and Fanatical Focus would be hilarious when you have both Relentless Rage and Evasion.

The problem with that is that there's been no instance where Jason's mother gives him radiant or necrotizing damage buffs in the Friday the 13th movies, so it's a bit out of character for him.

@@durendal761 all true but if your DM doesnt want to have unearthed arcana in their game zealot would be a good option, although I would also then recommend changing your background to acolyte so you can get free reserections from whatever god you go withs temples. Maybe play the character in a way that he was sent by a god to punish the living or something.

@@DarthMaulSaiyan Exactly. We have to be willing to reflavor things to fit the character sometimes. The Hexblade patron is specifically written as a magical sword from a very specific place of instance, but how many builds on Tulok's channel alone have it and just have the pact powers fill the role of something else entirely? The Green Lantern Ring sure isn't from the Shadowfell. Same with Paladin and Sorcerer, sometimes with Bard, everyone being a Vuham, Riddick being a Drow, etc.

Love the class build but an alternative to the race if your dm doesn't allow revenants would be goliath, strength and con bonuses and stones endurance, once a rest use your reaction to reduce damage you take by a d12 plus con modifier. Very Jason for the concept of nasty hits being entirely shrugged off.

Stones Endurance is indeed an excellent ability, didn't think much of it when I first made a Goliath, but that ability saved me from big hits like 10 times so far, freaking epic.

Hmmm... I don't think Stones endurance would get used a lot later on. Uncanny dodge is just better. A Half-Orc would be a better pick in my opinion because of the extra crit.

Bugbear is great for the reach and extra sneakiness. I'm playing a bugbear barbarian/assassin and he is just ridiculous. I went with bear totem not berserker because I wanted the extra damage resistance and the insane strength that a bugbear gets with it, also fatigue sucks. Just turned level 10 and got barbarian 6, if I make it to 11 I'm adding some levels of gloomstalker ranger, probably 4. The campaign might not go that far and certainly not to 20 but if it did my build is assassin 8, bear totem barbarian 8, gloomstalker ranger 4. Stealthy, deadly, mostly indestructible.

For classes, I could definitely see Zealot Barbarian for Xena, maybe with a little bit of Devotion or Heroism Paladin, Thief Rogue (for thief like abilities, plus Elektra doesn't seem to use disguise kits or assassinate people) with some Shadow Monk (I'd consider a sai to be used as a monk weapon, maybe re-flavor a dagger if in a pinch), and Kensei Monk and Champion Fighter for Buffy. For the race, clearly Elektra and Buffy are Human, I'm a bit on the fence with Xena, either with Human or Aasimar.

So after seeing this I played a max level one shot with this. The one shot was basically a battle royal between all the players. I did not win but Jesus Christ I had fun. Being able to see the others faces when I'd pop out of no where and unleash hoards of damage only to disappear again after a kill was priceless. This was amazing to play and I really recommend atleast trying it.

I made an elf fighter who was kinda like Jason but acted like Peacemaker. He was a guard who witnessed his queen get beheaded and now swore to never again have mercy for enemies of the kingdom. He forged an intimidating metal mask for himself and hardly ever talks

To make an un-asked for rule nuance clarification, it is worth noting that (according to the wording in the Handbook) Berserker Barbs CAN go into a Frenzy when they Rage, not that they MUST. To avoid exhaustion, just rage normally for “small/medium” fights, only activate Frenzy when you need the extra hits.

Flavor wise I think revived rogue could work well aswell, since it makes it so you don't have to breath eat or sleep, aswell as a free proficiency. Problem being the necro bolt doesn't fit too well and won't be put to too much use due to frenzy bonus action. So this build is Def better gameplay wise

Long time lurker here. Not sure if someone pointed it out but if you go Variant Human (because Jason is a special boy) you can take the resilient feat for Con to give you the +2 to match the revenant and get con save proficiency. However you do lose the slow healing factor and resurrecting Immortality. Never had a GM who let me play a zombie unfortunately. Thanks for the exciting build Tulok!

Generally, I love your builds. You are responsible for three or four villains that have played hell with my players. While technically within the rules, if a player came to me with this, I'd give him a chance to state his case but I'd probably nix it. My understanding is that sneak attack works by means of a precise strike against a vulnerable spot on the target while rage works because you're whaling away like a madman. I've been wrong before though.

I'd flavour it as: I strike hard in the right point, and RIP AND TEAR the blade out instead of just pulling back. OR: I can smash a vital area harder than an average rogue, like a heavy chopping strike to the neck.

I love the wild combos you can make for Barbarian multiclass. My favorite is Warlock/Barbarian because you recover everything on short rests and you can DPS your way through dozens of scenarios. Run out of spells? Rage and charge! Resistant to nonmagic damage? Pact Magic has some great damaging spells.

Cool to see a Rogue/Barbarian build. Was making a Barbarian/Rogue build a while ago to get "magic" with Barbarian. Path of Zealot didn't fit thematically and I didn't like Path of Wild Soul. I wanted weapons so no Wild Shape from Druid. Finally, I heard Monk was completely incompatible with Barbarian. Settled on Soulknife Rogue and Path of the Beast. Thanks for confirming some Barbarian/Rogue synergy.

Episode #137 of the Fire Emblem stats: Jason Voorhees. He's great at swords, brawling, heavy armor, and faith (specifically the signature slasher villain teleport). He has a budding talent in bows since he uses bows in the 2009 version. He's bad at authority and reason because he's a single-minded murder machine. He has great HP, attack, and defense, but he has shitty speed of course and bad resistance, since he's historically done awful against psychics.

Freddy is whispers bard and fiend-lock, whispers bard because well obviously, but fiend lock for hurl through hell, that is canon how Jason got there

Shortswords are more pokey than slashy. A scimitar is closer to a machete; it deals the same amount of damage and still has the finesse property, but it deals slashing damage rather than piercing damage. Rogues don't start proficiency with scimitars (for some reason), but you could try to convince your DM to allow that by explaining the reasons above. If they're really stubborn, multiclassing into barbarian gets you proficiency with all martial weapons, so you won't start with a machete, but you'll end with one.

Never did I look at this "BIG OLD" hulking monstrosity and think "sneaky breaky like", but now that I look at it, Rogue actually really fits him. Rogue and Barbarian are not a combo I would've thought would work, but it does, and I'm happy. I don't know if I think the lore would fit, but I'd swap out to Path of the Totem Warrior (Bear Totem) to just make this guy resistant to all damage except psychic (hello Freddy). Thanks for the build, I'm gonna set this loose on my players for some of that not-so-ambient horror.

If you don't mind a bit of fantasy in your jason cosplay, I'd say have the half orc instead of human assuming you keep everything after applying revenant (not sure how that works personally, never seen it myself). The 1/day no, i don't drop instead racial is really good and fits the undying motif rather well.

That lvl 8 Barbarian ASI, I'd recommend taking the Resilient Feat for Constitution instead of a +1 Con/+1 Str. You'll still be capping Con there without sacrificing your Str modifier, but you'll be gaining that Con save proficiency you sorta complained about not having later in the vid.

I have two suggestions for future “How to play ... in DnD” videos. First is Talion from the Middle Earth games, whom I’ve suggested before, the other is Sun Wukong the Monkey King from the Journey to the West tale, because goddamn if his isn’t the ultimate barbarian.

Shanoa from Castlevania: Order of Eclesia (I may be missspelling). I've been trying to build a class based on that game, and seeing her playstyle semi-translated to pre-existing rules would be amazing inspiration. Also I just loved the game and only recently found it again and fired it up again.

Regarding range, throwing weapons might be an option there to at least have something. Daggers are finesse weapons so they can even get your sneak attack hit, though you miss out on some of the Barbarian buffs. However, with Reckless Attack, you can actually negate the long range disadvantage penalty. So while you may not have a lot of range, you are still pretty darn accurate at mid range. Edit: I just double checked and it states Sneak Attack requires a Finesse OR Ranged weapon. So it may be getting into the weeds of the rules a bit, but you might even be able to use a Sneak Attack with a thrown Handaxe or Javelin.

A sneaky javelin is a great visual. In fact, Jason killed someone with a bow, in one of the films. I forget exactly which, but he lured them out into the archery range.

@@TheEndKing Honestly, any weapon that evokes a camp aesthetic would work. Handaxes as woodcutting hatchets, Daggers as kitchen knives, javelins and bows as sports equipment, etc. Somewhat aside, perhaps use a Scimitar rather than a Shortsword once you take Barbarian levels. Basically the same mechanics but uses Slashing rather than piercing.

@@josephperez2004 I was thinking the same. Plus, the benefit to that is there's a magical weapon called the Scimitar Of speed. Lets you attack one extra time.

I feel like in terms of staying power, the feat resilient (Con), and Bear totem barbarian might be worthwhile options, not sure how well the rest of the totem barb abilities would work with the build though

I'm just going to nickname this Barbarian/Rogue multiclass the 'Slasher'. It seems fitting. Also, I'd say a machete is closer to a scimitar- but wouldn't you know, that's a finesse weapon too! And while I'm not sure if there's any precedent for Jason doubling up on machetes, engaging in some two-weapon fighting gives you your bonus attack without having to resort to Frenzy (and Jason doesn't strike me as the type to bother with a shield).
