Dave... I've been playing guitar for 30 years... I've been stuck in position one of the pentatonic all those years, it has been super frustrating and I thought I just wasn't good enough. I've read books, tried CAGED, watched hundreds of videos and it just never sank in. I've watched videos by some very prominent youtube guitar teachers... nothing, just wouldn't click for me. Last Thursday, I watched this video (I'm a huge Rory fan), I wanted to figure out how to play Tore Down (Rory's version makes everyone else's seem bland, especially Clapton) and you suddenly opened the entire fretboard to me! I'm shocked, stunned and I will forever be grateful... I have been playing non stop since with backing tracks, with Rory and I can now suddenly play, not just Bad Penny and A Million Miles Away and I'm having so much fun playing "Fuel to the Fire".. I soon as I get my pace up, I'm gonna try for "What's Going On"... Dude, you're a fucking legend!! Thank you!

I've been a massive Rory fan since i was 12 (I'm now 61). I saw "the man" in Birmingham Town Hall in (I think) 1974 or 75, and for that i'm eternally gratefull, but your lessons have resurrected Mr. Gallagher. His skills live on in you and for that i kneel and pay hommage to your ability to bring this to the masses. Keep it up and take this series as far as it needs to go. You said a trillion videos!!!. I'll settle for a few hundred. Rock on, Dave.

Interesting to learn how you see scales! Totally not how I would explain them, but as long as good music comes out of it, that is all that matters. What confuses me is why you only mention the passing "notes" in certain octaves, and ignore them in others? For me, I see the pentatonic scales as snippets of the "mother scale" (minor, major scales plus all modes) and the flat 5 as a passing note... all of which are equally imortant in all octaves, all over the neck!
@thedavesimpson6 жыл бұрын
I don't kno why i do it this way. Its just what makes sense to me. Thank you for watching. : )
@shakeyourguitartutorials5 жыл бұрын
hello, it's right rory does not stick on boxes and very often (like his favorit scale) he adds the major second ! witch make it in fact an eolian mode on "shadow play " becaouse of the b flat playerd on the rythme guitar riff ! eolian and sometime dorian (but he rarely plays the sixth degré )! and sometimes he uses the blue note but rarely on his album solos..... i call that irish mode! love rory : ) good video mister Simpson as you do ! : )

I had always thought that his note choice came from pentatonic/aeolian scale shapes . Isn`t aeolian the same shapes as ionian but focused on the minor 3rd notes instead?

How do we know what notes to nick? Will any note from the next position do if it is played as a barely noticeable passing note? I'm really learning here!!

Can this be consider the natural minor scale?
@therodeoflip6 жыл бұрын
some of the 'added' notes (not the flat 5 - that is a blues note) Dave was talking about, are derived from the natural minor scale - (D natural Minor) the notes in the D natural minor scale are the SAME as the notes of the F Major scale (or Ionian mode) it is just starting the scale from a different Root note or tonal centre giving the scale a different sound. ie major or minor
