I am a 65 year old gramma and I decided to learn to play the lyre .It looked like the easiest and it didn't cost too much. I am having so much fun learning how to play it. I can't read music but I am learning thanks to you. Not many people would take the time to put out such fabulous tutorial videos and not ask for anything in return. You are a little angel. Thank you so much.

@Gramma Lynnie, reading notes for the lyre is even easier than for the guitar, even if they use the same music notation. I think of the blank spaces on a music sheet as being occupied by the notes, starting from the bottom, as F-A-C-E - easy enough, right? Next note after F is G, so that takes the second line from the bottom. Next note after A is B, which takes the *third* line from the bottom. And so on. Slightly more complicated are those notes below the first line and those above the topmost, which still give me a little trouble. I say it's easier for the lyre than for the guitar because those notes correspond exactly to the strings of the lyre. Ms. Sharon has another video on associating the strings on the lyre with those on the music sheet. As an aside, I've had my lyre for only maybe 10 days, and while I can play the melodies, I still need to work on the harmonization

Omg I just found out your channel and these vids are really useful for me as a beginner! I chose lyre as the first instrument to learn, could read and play some tabs but found it hard to find a source explaining clearly how it works and its technique. So thank you Sharon, you deserve more attention xD! Please keep up the work! Besides, one question is that I really want to learn the lyre from basic to advanced and I see your channel has many "How to play" playlists which is a little bit confusing for me. So do you have any suggestion which should I start with and progress on?
@learningthelyreharp3 жыл бұрын
I would start by deciding which method and type of music you would like to move forward with. Once you have decided it will then be easy to concentrate on the basics and techniques that is needed.

Hi! I love your videos and tutorials! I have just bought a 16 strings lyre for myself and your videos have helped me a lot. But I'm just wondering if it is possible to use a lyre to play the chords on the guitar? I want to use my lyre to accompany singers when they sing, is that possible?
@learningthelyreharp2 жыл бұрын
Yes you can definitely play by chords and accompany singers. Accompanying voice is what the ancient lyres are designed for. Chords are chords and the way it is formed is similar for every instruments and may just need slight adjustments depending on instruments. For example C chord triad is always the notes C-E-G whether on pianos, guitars or lyres. The formation will vary based on the instruments. I have made some song tutorials using chords and lead sheets. You may find these useful

There is no standard string orientation for lyres. It comes down to preference. There is nothing wrong with your lyre, just need adapt a technique that works well with your lyre and one that you enjoy

Nice video!.Is it possible to raise/lower the pitch of the strings by your fingers like you would do on a guitar?
@learningthelyreharp Жыл бұрын
It is possible but very hard to achieve on these lyres especially when playing a song. On guitars there are frets that would support and allow these changes, lyres don't have frets and the string type and lengths don't make harmonics easy either like we would on other string instruments.

Ms Sharon you are an amazing teacher. I don’t know anything about music and I’m understanding everything. I’m not sure if I should start with a 7 or 10 string. My goal is to stay with a 10 once I get better. Things may change in the future, but, I have listened to a good quality 10 string lyre harp and it sounds beautiful. What do you suggest? TIA!
@learningthelyreharp8 ай бұрын
I would go with the 10 string. If you wanted to exclusively play pentatonic, you can retune this simply enough and it will give you two octaves of pentatonic notes
@GigiFl8 ай бұрын
Thank you. I will do that. :)

Coming over from guitar. How would you play in keys other than c? We play in a church praise band and not all of the songs are done in C. Thanks for all of your videos!
@learningthelyreharp11 ай бұрын
Diatonic lyres need to be tuned to the key music is in advance. If you are playing by chords consider using suspended or simplified extended chords to by pass the flat or sharp Ie if you are playing in Gmajor and need an F sharp for the D Chord, then. Playing the D in Sus2 DEA or Sus4 DGA works well. There are chromatic lyres available if you play a lot of accidentals for melodies and find that you need to switch from one key to another all the time.

How do you play the part that says Some Strumming Patterns Basic Down Strokes 1+2+3+4 with arrows, Basic Down and Up Strokes, and One of the Most Popular Patterns?
@learningthelyreharp2 жыл бұрын
Follow the blocking pattern for example to play the C chord you will need to strum strings C E &G. This means you will block the notes in between these so you don't accidentally strum other strings that are not part of the chord. Most basic pattern is strum four down strokes for 4/4 time (count 1 2 3 4). Once your good with this, subdivide the notes you can then count 1&2&3&4&. Basic strum pattern first this is down strum on the numbers and up strum on the &, so it will be down, up, down, up, down, up, down, up. Once you have both of these well and can keep the rhythm going you can mix and match the pattern ie a popular one will be down, down, down up, down up. It will appear in music as quarter note, quarter note, then 4 eight notes. I hope this is making sense. I will try and do a quick video in future.

hi good afternoon... how can i play minor and charp notes in my harp mam?
@learningthelyreharp3 жыл бұрын
You would need to preset the lyre strings where you need the sharps and flats by tuning the pins half a degree up or down to flat or sharpen the note in order to play the scale the song is in if you don't want to transpose to Cmajor. The modern diatonic lyres are not great for accidental notes so I would either omit the accidental and replace it with a pause or another note(s) I find sounds great. Hope this helps

What is a higher octave and how to do one?
@learningthelyreharp2 жыл бұрын
Octave refers to set of strings or notes. From C - B is one full octave, so the notes above or after these first set of strings/notes is a higher octave.

It means making sure students have a good foundation on technique and basic music theory.
