The rings are definitely a magic item you have to get, but kensei whip definitely could be flavored like a simpler version of them. You can shield yourself with it, gives you reach with monk die damage, and can be made even stronger with ki points
@arnox4554
@arnox4554 2 жыл бұрын
The thing is though... What exactly are the limits of the rings? Beyond having a range limit (which doesn't even limit them that much as they still have long range), they seem to allow practically unstoppable telekinetic control over them and also allow you to fly. That, and they of course prevent all aging. With that said, they can be taken from you by someone who has enough willpower and the know-how, but that's about it.

HOT TAKE: Fighting Unarmed in Dnd is low-key based and a lot of Dnd "broken" builds can be solved if you know the disarm rules. Also people are so focused on making the most dpr build that they don't realize that punching a Dragon is lit no matter how much damage it does. Also if you try to play every class like you play a Paladin (which is probably the best class to be fair), then dnd might not be as fun for you as you think it is.
@jeremylackey6587
@jeremylackey6587 2 жыл бұрын
I love playing martial artists in dnd. Special maneuvers like Grappling, disarming, tripping, or dragging an enemy can often turn the tide of a fight just as fast as a fireball or a hex-paldins uber smite attack. And it's always waaay more fun to describe how my monk arm locks a minotaur, disarms him, then elbows it in the face. Way cooler than I swing my sword and hit for 89 damage again. And that armlock makes damn sure that the smite hits. 😎👉👉

Hot Take, but I think Astral Self would be a good version of the 10 rings. You get 5ft of reach, Wis based super strength, magic eye sight, the ability to deflect energy, extra damage, a 3rd attack and an AC buff. That along with the rest of monk really covers the 10 rings pretty dang well IMO

When you said AC was a priority, I was expecting a Hexring Warlock dip instead of Battlemaster, with the rings being a magical whip. As a Hexring, you’d get Shield, while replacing Skill Expert with Magic Initiate or similar can give Jump (unfortunately, Zephyr Strike can’t be gained by an official Feat; if wanted, ask your DM if he is fine with ‘Magic Initiate - Ranger’). Bladesinger would have given more AC, and Shang did sing. But that’s a third modifier that will remain low. Then again, Shield and a few other spells don’t use your modifier for attacks or saves…

I do still believe that the monk die should be a bit better. I do love monk ngl I do, but I just wish they got the same HD as other martial fighters. Simply so I don’t feel forced to get the tough feat. Or play hill dwarf. Also martial arts die should start at d6, d8, 2d6, 2d8. But that’s just me.
@patricklabreche
@patricklabreche 2 жыл бұрын
I can see why many people think Monk should get d10s but I think that's because Monks are meant to be dodge tanks and not meat tanks like the other martial fighters. Part of it might be the anticipation that more players would utilize Patient Defense in combat to mitigate damage, plus features like Deflect Missiles and Evasion. Monk's way more about blocking damage without taking specific choices (i.e. Battle Master Parry, Paladin Shield of Faith, or taking the Shield Master feat) because their abilities are baked into the baseline class. I like that martial art die progression, though. I hope something like that gets updated in 5.5e if Fighters are gonna get the better Unarmed Fighting at level 1.
@Mary_Studios
@Mary_Studios 2 жыл бұрын
I agree I find it weird that they get the same hit die as a rouge when monks are very much a close fighting class and should have the same hit die as fighter. The fact that Rangers get a d10 and not monks surprises me.
@Trial88
@Trial88 2 жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t complain about a d10 hit die, but I won’t complain about a d8 either. Monks are not intended to be played as a wall. They’re kind of a hybrid martial/ control class that kites very well and can avoid damage for the most part. As for the martial arts die. I can see where you’re coming from on that, but man that is way strong at high levels as a base die. I think a more fair scaling would allow the martial arts die to scale with character level instead of monk level and end with 2d6. That and allowing them to add wis to damage as part of the 13th level class feature (much like the bladesinger gets at level 14 for int) would be a nice boon as well. Don’t get me wrong though. If my dm allows me 2d8 I’m thanking them and not looking back as I headbutt everything they throw at me.
@TheLegendaryLegacy
@TheLegendaryLegacy 2 жыл бұрын
@@Trial88 Having a D10 HD doesn’t make them a wall it makes them balanced around other martials. If you are doing point buy you’ll have a mediocre AC that cant be increased at all aside from using nearly all your ASIs to improve your AC. Which you can’t reasonably accomplish until level 12 unless you are a human or custom lineage. By that point every other martial has a superior AC and the one that might not has superior HP. The martial at this point has either a plate mail and a shield, magical armor that don’t require attunement (unlike bracers of defense which give only a +2), spells like hunters mark of certain smite spells, a fighting style, and/or a rage bonus. Then to add into how much more damage they can do, they likely have a fighting style, which either increases their accuracy should they be a ranged combatant (which still increases their overall likely hood of damaging the opponent) or a fighting style that increases their damage altogether. Hell the barbarian doesn’t even have a fighting style but due to his rage bonus his damage increases. The paladin and ranger have spells that will mathematically out damage the monk even against multiple opponents. The fighter will have their multiple ASI’s and their subclass which will decimate the monks ability to keep up in any department. Hell if I dive into subclasses more the monk gets the short end further. Also 2d8 is not even a lot to ask for at LEVEL 17+. Think about what you’d be fighting at that point? That only increases the average damage by 2 from a 2d6 damage die. That means that someone using a basic +2 great sword will keep up. The barbarian with a moonlight greatsword (for the purpose of overcoming DR) does more with their rage bonus. Depending on what subclass you pick for ranger or paladin they have major increases using 1st and 2nd level spells. I love monk mind you I truly do. It’s one of my top 3 classes. It just needs more love. I don’t think a d10 is alot to ask considering monks are MAD. This allows leniency on Constitution without feeling like you have to be a certain race or grab a feat. 2d8 at tier 4 play isn’t crazy to ask for. Some people say it should be 2d10 like 3.5e or 3d6. I’m content with doing slightly more than a non magical greatsword at level 17. Monks are also bonus action heavy and half the time we use it to attack. Stunning strike is great the stunned condition is brutal which is probably why WOTC and everyone else is scared to improve monks. However SS is a con save one of if not THE MOST common saving throw in all of 5e. Meaning you have to max out your wisdom soon to make is as effective as possible before those creatures start making their appearance. Also step of the wind is a worse version than what the rogue and goblin get for free. Doubling your jump height when str is likely your dump stat isn’t all that cool which is the only thing that really is the difference as a better way to dodge your opponent is not to be in front of them.
@Trial88
@Trial88 2 жыл бұрын
you’re still thinking about this as a monk being a primary striker or dpr character. That’s not the role that wotc created the class for. And realistically the main downside to monks is their sub classes and the fact that they don’t have anything that can be truly improved upon with feats and such. They have the same hit die as the rogue because neither the rogue nor the monk are intended to be played by staying in the middle of the fray. The other “problem” with monks is that their free bonus action attack is no longer unique. There are so many ways to get that now that it just isn’t as good. They should be able to use the attack action as a bonus action. Low levels it’s basically the same as it is now, but then at level 5 they spike quite a bit. Furthermore giving them the same amount of attacks as the fighter makes sense as monks are fast. This would next a maximum of 8 at level 17+ which sounds like a lot, but when they don’t get sharp shooter or great weapon master then the damage will really only bring them closer to the average. This is assuming you don’t go and add to the current martial arts die. Now as far as ac is concerned. Bonus action dodge means that if you go in with a 24+ AC and attack twice with your action then just bonus action dodge for attacks to have disadvantage against you then you won’t be getting hit very often. I’m sure wotc thinks this strategy is too good and mitigates it by essentially hard capping the ac so you can’t be full of shenanigans. I’m not disagreeing that the monks aren’t viable at an optimized table if you want to keep up damage wise, but I’m also not agreeing that they should be. If you’re wanting to play a monk that’s a massive damage dealer then you’re not really looking at the monks the right way. Now I will say that if you strip away all sub classes and feats then monks are actually pretty good. They still aren’t elite, but what does the fighter have at its core that’s better? Action surge and more ASIs. At high levels of play they have more free attacks, but with flurry of blows it’s the same amount. That’s not until 17+ though. At that level the fighter is using a greatsword for four attacks. The monk is punching for four attacks.

The biggest monk weakness isn't anything to do with monk itself. It's enemy con save scaling. They can't heavy weapon for those nice damage feats, they can't even beat a warlock with agonizing blast in direct damage because they don't get more oomph at 17th. BUT it's not like people complain bards have bad damage. We know that's not really their job. Monks are mage geekers and enablers, stun is huge, not just for your own use (advantage gives you damage above or on par with agonizing blast because you hit more) but enabling allies by giving them advantage too and making enemies auto-fail Dex and Strength saves. The issue being that after level 14ish, landing a stun is a rapidly losing battle, you almost might as well save it for Diamond Soul. If con saves scaled like Dex saves or Int saves though, you'd need maybe three attempts to stun rather than 11. Spending 5 ki a turn to flurry of stuns and you still have less than a 33% chance to land even 1, it's just a joke.

I'm really surprised you didn't go Way of the Astral Self. Extra reach for unarmed attacks, force damage, elemental resistances for some ring shenanigans. The Astral abilities can easily be flavored to the rings and bonuses to charisma wisdom and strength throws can really bolster up some of those lower scores. Then with 17 lvls in monk and 3 in fighter it would give you +2 AC and and extra attack like lvl 11 fighters have.

I've been playing a shadow monk/battlemaster fighter for over two years now. Yes it's a lot of fun and the flavor is great, but I do significantly less damage than any other martial class, and I run out of resources (including HP) very quickly. To be fair, my highest rolled stat was a 12, so...

Timeless body actually makes sense since the ten rings make you immortal
@feralart
@feralart 2 жыл бұрын
Timeless Body doesn't stop the ageing process, it merely keeps age from eventually sapping your physical stats. Best example would be the old masters in the old Kung Fu films of the 70's: they were old as shit with long white hair & moustaches and still whooping everybody's asses.

That’s true but it has a similar effect regardless, for most monk builds on the channel timeless body isn’t relevant to the character

@@camusreviews6877 it doesn't prolong life beyond the natural lifespan, they just don't get slower and weaker as they age. The whole age penalty is generally a little used mechanic in the game anyway.

Pointing out the problems with class doesn’t mean you hate it, it means you love it enough to hope WotC does too. Monk AC is considered bad because of what you have to sacrifice for it. At level 1 a Fighter with chain mail and a shield has 18 AC. There is no way for Unarmored defense to match that unless you roll amazing stats or gain 8 levels. You are also locked into improving those stats which reduces your flexibility to focus on other areas of play. Monks are locked out of Heavy weapons which means they fall far behind on damage and I’m not talking about optimizers here, a Barbarian with reckless attack which anyones little brother could pick could make your contribution feel meaningless. Monks can make good archers with Sharpshooter and focused aim, that doesn’t do much for living up to the specific fantasy. Stunning strike is held back by the fact that Constitution saves on the average Are much higher though you can make luck by spending Ki for multiple retries but this places the Monk into this situation where some DMs overrate them due to the occasional stun but the more you play the more that outcome shows to be an outlier. I can talk at length about how limited the class is by the fact that so many things consume Ki and bonus actions, often at the same time. The original playtest design for the class had abilities work without Ki and on the same action, all of that disappeared in 2014 with the publication of the PHB. They were on the right track and overreacted to feedback most likely. These builds are fun, but not everyone pointing out issues is doing so in bad faith. I love the flavor, I’ve played the class, but I’m not being disrespectful when saying that it can feel embarrassing to do so and that shouldn’t be the case.

Hey man, i would love a build on Misaka Mikoto (Toaru kagaku no railgun). ever since i discovered that Jim's magic missiles uses a coin as material i assosiated the spell with her. If you want a headstart, i made her a champion fighter lv5, monk Lv1 and Evocation wizard Lv14 (that's how you make Jim's magic missiles into a devastating weapon. especially at close range with hold person/monster, or if you have advantage on your spell attacks somehow,). let me know what you think
