One of the most difficult things for beginners is determining how much to bid. When I first learned the game, my friends and I played several hands without bidding and they told me to just take as many tricks as I could. This allowed me to really get the feel of the game and made bidding easier later.

I was searching for a video to help teach someone else spades and stumbled upon this...I totally disagree with this tutorial! for someone who doesn't know any better, they're the ones who gave a thumbs up. Firstly, teaching someone that they will play anything other than the lowest in a suit that lead, knowing they're not taking the hand is ridiculous... if somebody leads with a suit you don't have in your hand, and you have to play off, than try to win the hand with your lowest spade in the event someone else is not cutting as well. Playing off with a club if hearts are lead while maintaining a spade is obsord. TAKE EVERY BOOK YOU CAN without reneging.
@bizoyd295 жыл бұрын
@@moniquey5118 my question. Is what if someone does have a suited card, but its low and they cheat and say they dont have that suit so they cam play a spade and win? You would never know.
@keithdavis6030 Жыл бұрын
Overall, this is a great tutorial, and I appreciate it. The one negative would be that (TYPICALLY), you want to throw the smallest card needed to win a trick and throw the smallest card possible when none of your cards can win, anyway. So, since the tutorial wasn't getting into deeper strategy, it was pointless not to model this.
@02SplinterCell025 жыл бұрын
For bidding, a general rule of thumb is to bid the # of spades (exclude 2, 3, 4, spades) along with the number of non-spade Aces in your hand. Let's say you have.... 2, 5, 10, J, Q spades and also an Ace heart. Assuming there are no other Aces in my hand, I would likely bid 5. Bidding is WAY more complicated than that but it is usually helpful for beginner players until they learn the game. I've won as few as 2 tricks with 7 spades on my hand and also have won as many as 5 tricks with no spades in my hand.

I think it would have helped if there were a little more explanation of why players selected the cards they played. For example: 2:11 Why did Player D and Player A select the 7 of Hearts and the 10 of Hearts to play when over the other Heart choices in their hands. 2:26 After Player B led with the King of Hearts Player C had no Hearts left after playing the 7 of hearts on the previous hand, but why did he throw off his King of Clubs instead of trumping the hand with a Spade? Regardless, I think it was a good introduction on how to play the game!

All in context. You may not have bid that card and think you can pick that book/trick up later without sandbagging. It's easy to learn but takes some time and good partners to learn to master. Btw dump the two of clubs and diamonds and add the jokers little and big jokers top the ace of spades

@GatherTogetherGames7 жыл бұрын
+Pedro Alvarez It depends on the first card played in the trick. If a heart is led, and no spades are played, the highest ranking heart wins the trick. If a club is led, and no spades are played, the highest ranking club wins the trick. Same goes for diamonds. For example, let's say the 8 of clubs is led by player 1. Each player has to play a club if possible. Player 2 plays the 10 of clubs, but player 3 and 4 don't have any clubs. Player 3 plays the king of diamonds and player 4 plays the queen of hearts. Player 2 wins the trick with the highest ranking card in the lead suit (which was clubs for this trick).

I’m not sure if this is a variation of the rules or a whole other game but I remember the scoring differently rather then books counting as 1, only score cards counted (10-A) so if you knew you weren’t going to win the hand you threw a low card down it would mess up the score of your opponents and each score card counted as one.

@GatherTogetherGames7 жыл бұрын
Assuming player A and player B are on the same team, they would score -116. A teams tricks are counted separately when a player bids nil. Player A would score -100 points for not making the nil bid, but would get 4 points for the 4 bags. This gives player A a total of -96 points. Player B would score -20 points for not making the 2 bid. Together they score -116.

When you can't follow suit, you're allowed to play any card. If you're trying not to exceed the number of tricks you've bid, you might waste a high card on one trick in order to avoid winning a trick with it later.

If you have no card of the same suit being led you can play whatever card including spades.
@awolf9133 жыл бұрын
5:32 that is incorrect. Any tricks that are won in a nil bid do not count towards the total score, it only adds to the bags. In this example, team 1 bids nil and bids 5. If it’s the first hand and player A takes a trick on a nil bid then that is -100 points. If player C the partner makes his bid of 5 then the count now becomes -50 total for the team. The addition of a trick taken to equal one point extra does not count on a nil bid or blind nil bid, therefore -49 is wrong.

I’m thinking people have a lot of personal house rules such as taking out club 2 and diamond 2 for spade and heart to trump ace of spades as well as include jokers. Anyone else have unique rules to spades?

Yes in Hawaii we play trumps! We play with 12 cards and 4 extra in the middle. You bid around the table a number from 3-7 if you want. (You also have an option to pass) 7 being the highest. You can then call your own trump suit which everyone has to follow. The winning bid also gets the 4 cards in the middle and is able to switch out any of his cards with any of the 4 if he chooses to. You then put the 4 leftover cards (trash) to the side after you’re done switching. To win the game you have to take the number you bid let’s say for example I bid 3. You subtract it from 8 which is 5. So I bid 3 that means me and my teammate has to stop the other team from making 5 tricks or packs before the 12 cards In our hand run out. The higher the bid you go, the less packs the other team has to make. But if you win the bid you get to call the trump suit and look at the 4 middle cards that may or may not help you.

Hold up how exactly do u bid I don't understand that ....

Hello! When you bid, you bid the number of tricks you think you will win. There isn't exactly a strategy for bidding, you really just toss out numbers. If you fail to fulfill your bid, you lose ten times the number of tricks you bid. For example, if I bid 5, but fail to win 5 tricks, I lose 50 points.

Well, Tim was unclear. He appeared to be unclear on a number of things in that interview, in fact. But no, Tom was the one talking about spades with apparent fluency.

How come Jacks are not counted ?
@coreyadams19823 жыл бұрын
There are 13 cards of each suit. By the 3rd time a suit goes around there is a higher probability that somebody is void and Queens and Jacks will get trumped.

In Hawaii we have a altered version of this which is waay more fun! At least I think it’s only hawaii cause I’ve tried looking it up and have never found it. Anyways! It’s called trumps! Instead of only spades being the best suit (trump suit) any of the 4 suits can be a trump. The first person to bid can bid 7 at the highest. So if I bid 7, the opposing team would only have to win 1 trick. If I bid 6 that would be two tricks for the other team. I bid 5 they make 3 and you guys get the point. Lowest a bid can go is 3. So if I bid 3 then the other team has to make 5 tricks. The bid goes around the table and to beat another persons bid you just go higher than them because the higher bid you go, the less packs or tricks they have to make. So the riskier it is for you. But if you win the bid at the end you’re able to collect the kitty in the middle. A kitty is an additional 4 cards in the middle that may or may not help you with your given hand. You can then call your own trump (spades) suit (which everyone is obliged to follow because you won the bid) and switch out whatever cards will help you to best prevent the other time from making said amount of packs or tricks. (So yes that means everyone only has 12 cards instead of 13). So the team that calls the bid gets to call the trump suit and has to prevent the other team from making said amount of packs. Say for example I bid 4 on diamonds. That means we have to prevent the other team from winning 4 tricks or packs and diamonds is the trump suit. If you accomplish that before you all run out of your 12 cards, you win the game. If the opposing team does make the 4 packs, you lose the game. Kinda long explanation but soo fun!
