Make no mistake: despite their lack of modern technique, these players would still beat most of us with their consistency, placement, quick reactions and overall fitness, provided they can learn how inverted rubbers behave. And if we were to play with their bats, not a chance.

To a point. The footwork isn't there, but they'd be awfully good amateurs, even today. Some of the issue is with the equipment. Those old slow rackets with pips required different strokes. I'm betting if you could move these guys forward in time with their same equipment, they'd be 2300-2400. When I played tournament TT I got matched up against one of these "relics from the 1950s." It was 10 years ago and he'd started playing as a boy. He was in his 60s. He was stubbornly using the old school equipment and style. He absolutely wiped me off the table. I wasn't any good, never got higher than 1300, but this guy who handicapped himself equipment-wise could hold his own against people over 2000 and had once been > 2200. I saw him give a Chinese guy, 2400, 40 years younger than him all he wanted and more.
