How to Play the 1-Finger (i) Flamenco Guitar Rasgueado. Exercises and Close-up View Included.
The 1-finger rasgueado (I) is seemingly the easiest one to play but without the correct expression and execution it can sound robotic and make our playing sound monotonous. The “i” rasgueado is played with by extending and/or contracting the index (I) finger across 2 or more strings and the trick to this is to apply a LOT of dynamic variation to each movement in order to add groove to your music. It’s easier said than done so in this video, I share examples of the i or i-i rasgueado and share a few exercises so that you can develop this technique correctly. This video is appropriate for beginner & intermediate students of both flamenco and classical guitar.

Great series of videos! I just started working on Juan Martin's method book, but obviously is not enough to get a closer and cohesive, detailed look on the techniques. The mid-nail thing and the whole-finger movement you mentioned, really did the difference. I was wondering why my finger felt like getting stucked in the strings, and trying these 2 advices, everything worked! My question is, does the stroke has to be in a straight vertical to the strings line, or can it be slightly diagonal? Because the latter comes more naturally for some reason.

Hi Geo, Thanks so much for your comment! I’m very glad to hear that my tips helped you out. To answer your question, usually a slight diagonal is preferred since it’s much more natural for the hand. Hope this helps!

Thanks for that Diego! can you please share the name of the little pickup you use inside the guitar? were do yo connect it to?

Hi! Thanks for commenting! I wish I had a simple answer to this, but my pick up set up is quite complex. I use the Fishman pro blend preamp as my foundation and then switched out the microphone for a K&K microphone & switched out the Fishman piezo for the K&K Classic (4 contact pads). So far, this has been the best set up I can come up with for sound, but it’s far from perfect. Like all plug-ins, its sound doesn’t even come close to the quality you’d get with even a decent microphone. I try to limit my use of this guitar to situations where plugging in is the only option. In those cases, I think it sounds good enough. :)

Just getting started. Do you have some recommendations of what to look for in the best guitar for a beginner on a budget? Thanks

Hi! Welcome to flamenco :) If you're just starting out my favorite guitar is this one by Yamaha: amzn.to/3H9YJ4u. It has a great response, a great feel, and a great sound for the price. I would not suggest spending any less than this ($400). I recommend it to all of my beginner flamenco students and have never received a complaint. In fact, I like it so much that I bought one for my mom! Also, if you're interested, I wrote a blog post on the difference between flamenco and classical guitar construction here: www.diegoalonsomusic.com/post/what-s-the-difference-in-the-construction. Best of luck!

Thanks. Do you have recommendations for finger nail length? I'm and older man 69yrs and my nails are not very strong but want to learn flamenco and classical. Thank you

Thanks for your comment! Great question. I’m going to make a video on this soon but for now, try to keep your nails as short as possible. With your fingers extended and the palm of your hands in front of your face, fingertips at eye height, you should barely see the fingernail peeking out just passed the fingertip. My fingernails are only about a millimeter past the flesh. This is a very personal choice, but I would definitely start here. I hope this helps!
