This is a great video. The other day I was trying to punch clear against a tall, fast opponent to try and get some initiative. This video makes me realise that there's so much more to think about during the rally than the one golden shot you think will win the round. Badminton is amazing in that way!

Great tutorial. As you said, it is very effective when you are in a threatening position to make a good smash/drop. One additional point that you might have kept for later. Playing punch clear with an added delay is a great deceptive tool. Opponents prepare for a smash/then are forced to run forward expecting a drop and then playing punch clear is a lethal weapon.

Hi greg and jenny, thank you so much for the detailed videos. Could i please ask a question? Sometimes i notice that i instinctively use a bevel grip instead of a forehand grip for overhead shots, this is accidental. How bad is this issue and are there any ways i can fix this? Many thanks!!
@BadmintonInsight
@BadmintonInsight 2 жыл бұрын
Of course! We would have to see it to know if it’s something you would need to change unfortunately. Record yourself and watch it back to see if it looks right or not and also ask yourself if you can play various different shots. Compare it to other people too! There’s no 1 ‘right way’ to play overhead shots but generally when you watch top players or clips we use in tutorials there are guiding principles that lead to effective technique, and therefore high level badminton players!

Great video on a topic which I’ve been waiting for Thank you! I was wondering - How much of deception involves your head position or even your eyes and where your looking? When I watch opponents I’m often focussing on their head and where they’re looking to try and predict where they will hit the shuttle. I would love you to do a video on the general tactics of deception.

Thanks for another informative video! I hv a question if that's ok. I was taught that the squeeze/finger power is very important in punch clear to create the flatter shuttle trajectory compared to more parabolic normal clear. Is this right? What are the differences between normal and punch clear?
@BadmintonInsight
@BadmintonInsight 2 жыл бұрын
Have you watched our clear video we mentioned at the end? We show the differences here! And we explain that it is the final acceleration (using some finger power) that creates the deception in this video?
@syafrinliong8912
@syafrinliong8912 2 жыл бұрын
@@BadmintonInsight i see. Yes, i have watched it before, but I'll have to rewatch it. I thought the finger power was the emphasis and that we can keep using punch clear to pressure opponent in singles game, but i think youre saying that the deception is the purpose of the punch clear? Thank you for your reply. 🙂

Yes we will likely talk about this soon! Are you talking about mens doubles? Or just doubles in general? If you have an opportunity where the shuttle is either high above the net, or it’s a short lift, these are good times! But only if you are in a good enough position to play an effective downwards shot!

I see punch clear probably more useful in single, I see in the last Thomas cup match between Anders Antonsen and Christo Popov, Anders Antonsen use punch clear 4 times which the 4th time bring him a match point, and then in 2020 All England, Carolina Marin use it 5 times against Tai Tzu Ying, also give her a score I see in single when a player use punch clear, they do it mostly to put their opponent out of balance
