I am 58 and have decided to start playing the cello as achallenge to myself! I have a neuro problem affecting my arms and hands and cannot feel properly but refuse to give up. I am not sure how it will get on but i loved the fact that in the video the position of the hand/bow/cello is pretty much how my hand is normally! Let the adventure begin (tho not sure if my cat will like it!!)

Hi! I'm 55 years old and have a relatively inexpensive electric cello on order. I have ZERO experience on stringed instruments. When I was a kid, I was intrigued with the cello, but started on trumpet in sixth grade. I did badly on trumpet and moved to the euphonium (baritone), in ninth grade through 2 years of college and did pretty well. During those years much of the music I played was originally written for bassoon or cello. A lot of baroque stuff by Bach, Telemann, etc... So this has always been kind of a "bucket list" thing for me, to learn cello. At least the simpler music for my own entertainment. Corona virus is now keeping a lot of us home and bored so this is a great chance for me to put my idle time to good use. Wish me luck!

@@MiloMcCarthyMusic So so ,..I managed a low squeak/groan so i guess that's something. At the moment due to refurbishement and my hands being quite bad the cello has ad to go in the loft, as not enough room and t could get damaged, but it will come out again after February. I wont give up. Thank you for asking

My husband is just amazing, he bought me a cello! It's my favorite instrument and he saw how excited I was about the idea of learning to play. So he bought me a nice beginners cello and told me to find a teacher so I can have some "me" time, (aka - break from 4 kids 5 and under) I was so floored by the gesture. I'm glad I found this video, as I have never held a Cello a day in my life! I can't wait to get started! Thanks for the video, I will be looking for more.

I don't own a cello my but ever since I was 14 I always wanted a cello. To me a cello seems like a sophisticated instrument but eventually I had a guitar (still bad at it). For awhile I kinda forgotten about cellos and was intrigued with guitars instead the further I try to master them. Until then, my interests of cellos have returned and I still yearned of either renting one or buying one (or make it from scrap even though I'm no carpenter) and I rather have the electric cello👍

In the past month, we have had three different cellist play at church and each time, he is moved to tears. Now, hewants to learn it. Since we homeschool, it means that I, too need to learn. My husband, a guitarist, also now wants to learn. When you said, "older people", it really hit home. My husband and I are both 37 and we will be teaching a 12 year old. Now, we just need to find a place to rent at least one. Around here, if it's not played at halftime on a football field, you cant rent it.

Should I get a 3/4 cello? I am tall for a woman (5'9"), but I am small boned...small hands, "lighter" features. So if my hands aren't going to be able to play the notes properly since they're too small, I'd rather just know up front so I can not invest and then feel bad because I'm not built the right way. Hi Justin; I'm a beginner (74 years old, yikes) and I just used your instruction for positioning the cello. Everything was great, except the bottom peg pokes me in the head and forces me to tilt my head to the right. I know this will cause neck damage pretty darn soon. I noticed your peg was cut off. What's that about?
@MrPendell6 ай бұрын
Mostly very useful and informative so far, but at about 4:30 in I found myself wondering what sort of tree “balsam wood” comes from and why your cello bridge was made of it. I have yet to meet a fiddle family bowed instrument whose bridge wasn’t made of maple- it’s a fine grained wood with pretty high strength in compression, and allows a fairly thin cross section to transmit lots of energy to the spruce top of the instrument. Also, I’ve used a number of square and rectangular cakes of rosin, and it is entirely possible to rotate those to various angles while applying so as to avoid developing a groove in the middle. I like the idea of a circular cake, though, and may look for one of those if I ever go through enough rosin to need more.

Guitar string sets are made up of 3 wound - 3plain steel OR 4 wound - 2 plain steel depending on the set diameters. Ive have played electric bass for a long time and I'm interested in Cello . I'm having trouble finding instruments better then the $200 specials and decent ones under $1000. Most of the " Student models " are way over $2000. In my area it seems that string shops are geared towards rentals and high end nothing to choose up to $1000

I’m 14 and i’m aiming to start to learn the cello, with a teacher, in a few months. I want to enter a music college (you start college at the age of 16/17 in the UK) and the college I want to go to requires an audition where you play your instrument. I already play the guitar; i’ve had a facination with the cello and just orchestra instruments as a whole. Do you think ,with daily practice, I will be skilled enough to be accepted into the college? I was just wondering if 2 years of learning could give me a decent amount of chance and skill.

lxiee I would also like to enter a music college , and I know how to play guitar and piano. Do you think that will be enough?
@lxiee97154 жыл бұрын
Jon Ken I think you could pull it off! Most music colleges require decent knowledge in music theory aswell, so if you’re educated in that aspect then the possibility is higher. So I would definitely give it a shot and apply to the college you want to go to, especially if you want to do music as a career.
