Well done on the explanation. I spent my childhood playing this game and now I’m teaching my kids. I must have played thousands of games and was never once bored. It’s the best of card games. Withholding the top cards from play despite trumps being played is called “renaging”. You can only renage on those three cards. It’s a very tactical game. Really fun.

In that first trick 6:38 a player would have played the ace of spades - ie still won the trick [using the 4th best card] - she/he would have held onto the 2nd strongest card in case it was needed to beat the ace of hearts [3rd strongest card] in a future trick - whenever you can be sure of a win [e.g. last player in the round] you’d always use the weakest card that can do so….save your ammo!

A fascinating bit of trivia for this game the Gaelic word for trick ,Cuig, also means five.

I usually try to use normal ranking when I show a new game like this to friends. A lot of Italian and Chinese games do this.

Auction 15 is a gem of a game based on 25, up to 9 players, but realistically a minimum 6. All players pay a nominal stake to go in the pot. Dealer deals an extra hand- the dummy hand- in the middle after his own, and doesn't turn a suit. Player left of the dealer opens the bidding to buy the dummy hand. Each player either bids or passes, depending on the relative strength of their hand, until one player buys the hand. The buyer then calls the suit/ trumps based on their hand, then they pick up the dummy hand, and pick the 5 best cards out of the 10. This player is aiming to win 3 tricks (hence Auction 15), and every other player is trying to stop them. The player to the right of the buyer plays first, so the buyer has to pass every other player to win the 1st trick. If the buyer gets 15, he or she claims the pot, but if they fail to get 15, then they put in the bid into the pot, and the next person deals the next round. The ideal game is with 9 players, because then 50 cards are in play. Each player needs to have a good grasp of regular 25, but if they do, then Auction 15 is the best game. An agreed limit to the betting is advisable at the outset, and in a case of 2 players betting the limit, each hand is turned up and the stronger hand wins, excluding the dummy hand. The 5, Jack and Ace of hearts are 'sworn' tricks, so if a player has these 3 cards, they declare they are sworn and the round isn't played out, they just collect the pot.

One little thing. The 5,Jack, and Ace of hearts are called matador’s. If a higher matador than yours is led and you only have matador’s, you have to throw yours. Example, someone leads the Jack of trump and you only have Ace of hearts. Since Jack is higher, you have to throw your Ace of hearts. But if someone leads Ace of hearts and you only have Jack of trump you do not have to throw it. They led lower than you. This is nice , especially if 5 is still in someone’s hand. You could lose your only trick. One other nice thing, the word “led” or “played. If 5 is led you have to play trump no matter what even matador’s. But say Spades is trump , someone leads a queen of Spades and than someone “plays” the 5. You only have the Jack. Your Jack still lives, they “played” the 5 not “led” it. You can play off. You Can play online at a sight google 25 for beginners. I play as guest. They do however use Irish ranking, but not bad.

The first trick was a poor play by the dealer. He should have played the Ace and for 2 reasons. he would still have won the trick and still concealed that he held a very high ranking card (Jack). He also now exposed his Ace as it could be beaten by the Ace of Hearts

After the dealer had dealt, does the first player have to play a trump card [if they have it], i.e. "lead" with a trump or can they "renege"? To clarify, this is for the very first play, right after the dealer had dealt and shown the trump card.

Teaching my kids at the minute, high red, low black, we play 9s when we have the numbers , 9 players 3 teams, it adds a whole new dimension to the game because you don't know what your partners have and you don't want to take a Trump card out of their hand by leading with a Trump, that's where tokens come in to play, its cheating really but a lot of people who play regularly together will have different signals to tell their partner what they have , it might be rubbing their head when they have the 5 or their nose when they have the jack or whatever, then theirs an unwritten rule of going to your play and not taking a short corner, keeping in the game and a tinkers deal to change the luck.

Deal each player a set of three cards, then deal each player a set of two cards for a total hand size of five. This is a traditional way to deal. You could also just deal out one card at a time until each player has five cards.
