This is very clear teaching & also can see pretty well. For mandolin though, lots of fingers going into very small spaces! Also a vote for a simple " Shady Grove" lesson.

A little trick I'm sure many of you already know, the mandolin is basically the same as the top (bass) four strings on a guitar but upside down. So if you picture a G chord on guitar with the two bass (top) strings, the E string 3rd fret the A 2nd fret, on mandolin you flip it upside down to play the thinnest (E) string(s) 3rd fret, second thinnest (A) 2nd fret. Then its the same with all guitar chords. Incidently, violin is same tuning as mandolin.

no, i had no idea 🤔🤔🤔 thanks for this and any other 'trick' given 👍👍👍 🙌🙌🙌

Wow. You are so clear, and the chords are visible. I'm a newbie on mandolin but an oldie human. I ordered a mandolin because my hands aren't working right after an illness. Helpful to demonstrate it in key D as that's a more common key to play it in and favoured by vocalists, fiddlers and accordion players. Personally I'd say a 4/4 rhythm is simply described as filling a bar with DOWN DOWN DOWN/UP DOWN/UP ad infinitum. Jimmy Powells-mandolin player UK

I'm a guitar player, but just bought a cheap mandolin just for laughs. IT'S A WAY FUN INSTRUMENT! I'm just learning the chords, and the weird tuning threw me off at first. Not to mention it's so tiny! but I'm having a blast messing around with it. Cool vid. Now I know another song. Thanks for post.
@jamesramsden53198 жыл бұрын
if you're a guitarist, think of the strings of a mandolin as the bottom four strings of a guitar in reverse order. Can make it a lot easier to get a grip on it.

So I'm new to the mandolin as well but I've been playing the french horn for 9 years so I'm not new to music. A few things are confusing to me in this video. One is when you slow down the strum pattern, it seems as if you're playing it in a different pattern than when you play it in the song. Slowed down is 1 2 & 3 & (eighth notes) and when played to speed it's 1 2 a 3 & (sixteenth notes). Also, are you playing another chord when you switch from the Am to F? Sorry, I probably didn't explain that very well, but in my opinion, it would be easier if you slowed down the song a lot more but played it exactly as you would full speed.

Hello :) I'm new to the mandolin, but I love this song so I'm determined to get it ;) However, in the video you show Aminor and F different than any of the chord charts I've googled. :( If you could recommend a cord chart to look at that matches what you show in the video I'd LOVE IT!

Hi! I'm in the process of choosing a mandolin (and I'm in it up to my nose). I was wondering if you could give me a first hand input on whether I should take the presence of a pick-guard as an important factor? I know it's pretty much of topic, but you seem like a kind of guy I'd like to have answer my mandolin-related perplexity. Thanks!
@BardofCornwall9 жыл бұрын
Mortensen Hello there. I wouldn't consider the pick guard important. On a guitar I tend to put some wear on that area, but not on the mandolin. Maybe it's because the clearance between the strings and body of the mandolin is greater than on a guitar.
@Pivojed9 жыл бұрын
***** Hey, thank you very much for such swift answer! An opinion from someone who knows the stuff and doesn't look like having hidden (financial or other uncool) motives means a lot. (Especially these days.)Thanks again and good luck!
