My understanding of the workshop manual was that the idler was supposed to press that long span of the belt up to pretension it 1mm, not 1mm of clearance.

You are correct, in addition to the 0.5mm clearance from the lower balance shaft, the balance shaft belt idler roller should be set at 1mm in upward tension on the longest span, not 1mm of gap, per the factory workshop manual, Volume I - Engine, Section 13-10. A lot of people will set them with a gap in hopes of reducing belt noise, but that is not as Porsche intended.

This is the only video that I’ve found with how to properly use this tool. I’m a do my belts on my 944 and have this tool so this video helps a lot. Question for checking the tension on the timing belt do you place the roller from the tool on top of a timing belt tooth or between them in one of the the grooves to get a accurate reading to 4.0 for timing belt tension?

@@Olsenspecawesome thank you. I know a lotta guys live by the 90 degree twist method or use a krikit for these belts but I wanted to learn to do it right. Amazing work and info on this vid 👍
