Hi robbin, great videos! We are expecting our 8 week old puppy in the next days. What are best practices with leaving water for the puppy specifically in the evening? Do u recommend leaving water in the cage when leaving the house for a few hours??
@PuppybeePuppyTraining4 жыл бұрын
Hi Roy, how nice you are having a puppy. What dog breed? To answer your question let us first talk about during the night. I have asked this question to 24 dog trainers before writing my first book on how to housetrain your puppy. The opinions vary on this subject, so the dog trainers make it difficult to draw a conclusion here. In my opinion, you can’t really do anything wrong here. The one thing you should keep in mind is that if you decide to place a bowl of water in the dog crate at night, your puppy will drink, so perhaps it will need to pee sooner too. If your question is about during the day. I do advise you to put a bowl of water in the dog crate when you leave your home for a brief time. Does this answer your question? Let me know! Good luck! - Robbin

Hi, very informative video. I have one particular issue, have been taking out my 10yr old toy poodle for routine in the balcony,as I live in apartment. I have been pro active ,and take her out well in time. However, she always manages to do the business outside of the pee pad. I have infact kept newspapers (wet with urine) on the pee pads for the scent. However, she manages to find a spot out of the pee pad . Can you help/ advise ?

Is she still doing this? Place her on the dry clean pad and hold her there till she pees then give a treat. Keep doing this till it clicks with her but it might take some time.

Hi Robbin, thanks for your videos, we just got an 8 week old puppy, are is it actually safe to take them outside before they get their full vaccines at 12 weeks? Also, we live in a condo, how do you suggest we get all the way down without an accident? What do you think of pee pads in a bathroom or the grass patches you can buy online? Thank you!

You're welcome! Yes, excitement from playing can trigger peeing. Try taking your puppy outside for a potty break after play sessions to help prevent accidents. Consistent potty breaks and positive reinforcement will make a big difference. Good luck!

Hi, are puppy pee pads a good or bad idea? I just got a 8 week old Chiweenie and need to get back to work, but I am afraid to leave him in the house alone with my cats. I have a puppy play pen I plan on putting him in when I am at work but anytime I leave him in a room alone or put him in his tent he cries!

Hi Robbin, thanks for the video! I got some useful hints - especially about picking up the puppy after being in bed/a crate and carrying it to the spot to pee. My question is, what's your opinion on potty training a puppy inside an apartment? Our puppy is 12 weeks and won't be fully vaccinated until 16-18 weeks old. I cannot take her outside for fear of her catching parvovirus etc. We have a patch of turf in the kitchen that we are training her to pee on as this mimics grass. Is this the best we can do?
@leah71714 жыл бұрын
Thank you for making this video. I have one question. When I set alarm in the middle of the night, if my puppy is not awake, should I wake her up to go potty?
@PuppybeePuppyTraining4 жыл бұрын
Please check the first few nights if your puppy pees inside the crate at night. If it did, then you know it probably will do the upcoming nights as well. You can wake it up calmly. There's nothing wrong with that for house-training it at night. Of course, during the day, you don't want to wake it up.

Question.... I have an 8 week old puppy. He’s a mixed small breed (Maltese, chihuahua, miniature Snauzer and Shih Tzu) he’s 4 lbs. I leave him in the laundry room with pee pads, bed, toys and water. He’s fed at 7am, noon and 7pm. We gets played with at least 4-6 times a day my family takes turns so he doesn’t feel bored or abandoned. He just got his first set of shots so I haven’t taken him outside much. He often misses the pee pad which I’m understand he’s a puppy and maybe has bad aim. My biggest concern is I’ve found poop in his bed several times. Why is he pooping in his bed? No one can take him out every 2 hours so I don’t want to crate him and that’s why I thought a play pen would be better. What do you advise?

Hi! - We got a French bulldog puppy 3 weeks ago, and she is now 12 weeks old - she is still having accidents in the house, but also pees and poops outside. We always praise her and give her treats when she goes. She has certain spots where she goes as well. My question is, how do we stop her from going in the house? We do take her out after a nap and about 20 minutes after eating.
@PuppybeePuppyTraining4 жыл бұрын
Hi Debbie, when your pup is still 12 weeks old it is no big deal she pees inside sometimes. This is part of having a puppy. Be patient. Of course, you can use tactics to speed up the process but being patient is very important as well. Furthermore, your question is very generic which I cannot answer in a KZbin comment. There are many tips/tactics to speed up the house-training process. Please read/listen to my book on house-training: www.amazon.com/How-House-Train-Puppy-Ultimate-Hand-ebook/dp/B087CQK66H/.

My 8 wk old chihuahua is scared of being outside. I’m trying to get him use to going in my back patio but he freaks out and wants back inside. I stayed an hour outside and he won’t potty. But the moment I bring inside he runs to potty pad and goes. He will hold it into he gets to a potty pad.
@PuppybeePuppyTraining3 жыл бұрын
That is not strange behavior. Try to find a spot of green nearby where there's barely any distraction for your puppy. Just stand there and wait for 5-10 minutes. If it doesn't pee take it back inside on your arm and wait for another 15 min. Go back outside again and repeat... Good luck!

We have 4 boxer puppies that are now 8 weeks old. I'm grateful to have found your videos! Some of the stuff we have been doing, but the nighttime training, we had previously just put puppy pads down just outside of the crate they sleep in. (We have a larger "fence" around the crate that we close at night and leave their door open so they can pee on the pads. Do you think this undermines house training?

after they do potty, and you reward them, what if it makes them think “oh so when i pee, i get rewards” like not just outside but anywhere?

Hey Ryan, good to hear you and your wife are enjoying my videos. Thank you for telling me. That encourages me to make more videos! That you both can work from home until the end of this year is a luxury indeed, especially with raising a puppy. When I lived in an apartment with my Golden Retriever puppy, I used a pen and also a crate. I placed the crate inside the pen so the puppy could choose whether he wanted to lay inside the crate or in the pen. I do suggest keeping your puppy close those first few nights. That's why I advice people to have their crate next to their bed. Furthermore, because you both are working from home this year, make sure you DO make time for practicing the puppy to be home alone training right from the start. It is to prevent separation anxiety in your dog. I wrote a book about this subject: How to Prevent Puppy Separation Anxiety: The Ultimate Guide. It is available on Amazon for $5 :-) - www.puppybee.com/how-to-prevent-puppy-separation-anxiety-the-ultimate-guide/. Good luck with your puppy! - Robbin

@@PuppybeePuppyTraining Hi, I am a little confused. I also live in an apartment and will be working from home. I was planning on keeping the crate with the pen in the living room. But you also say to keep the crate in your bedroom. Should I have a second crate? The crate in the living room will face the door to my bed room. Thanks, Erica
@PuppybeePuppyTraining4 жыл бұрын
@@lodisher The reason I say to keep the crate in your bedroom is for the first few nights so it will not feel left alone. After those first initial nights, you can move the crate little by little to the eventual place. You can use 2 crates for this in the beginning. You can also use a cardboard box or move the crate every day. Good luck!
