Wow! Great job Tim. Always a panic time when concrete arrives. It’s the stress of timing as well as the hard labour that drains you. You, your dad & your mates did a fantastic job. Well done to you all. Pouring concrete is all about prepping, timing & stamina. Fantastic job. 👍👍👍🍺

Brilliant, absolutely brilliant! Fortunately I just have a 4x3m base to make for a garden shed, but now I feel really confident my son and I can do it with no trouble. We're a way off the nearest road, so I guess we'll have to use a concrete mixer. Great way to keep fit!

I totally feel for you on this one! We had the same experience last year when my wife and I did the concrete poor for our 80m2 extension. Really glad the driver gave a few tips and the odd helping hand. It's a pretty stressful time in a build. Good job! :) Next time try and get a concrete mixer with a conveyer belt on it. Usually reach about 15 meters!

Great work guys! We had a similar situation with lack of experience for timings etc when we did the pour for a large shed base 13'x10' I think. We used the same method of skimming first with a length of timber then bull floating. Unfortunately we now have quite a large puddle form by the shed door every time it rains due to going too early with the bull float and causing it to dish slightly. Oh well you live and learn.

20+ years ago I screeded a floor at the local Wargrave vineyard - as it was then - Rock's Wines - (no more) We ordered 2 x wagons of read-mix screed but what turned up was 2 wagons like yours, except the mix was a 'lot' drier. We complained, they wouldn't budge. I had just one labourer and had to screed this dirty great bottling shed before it got dark in the evening. Had to keep wetting it down to keep it useable ..... One of those days you wonder 'how' you got through it. We had to have a couple of days off after :-( So I can certainly empathise with you boys, and just 'how' hard a day it was for you :-)

Good job. Have a mate who did it full time. He had a lot of trouble in the end with his shoulders. Rotator cuffs etc. I found using a petrol powered float saved me a lot of time and backache when I did my garage. Came up like glass. Hired a one cubic metre cement mixer and mixed my own concrete. A few mates and a slab or two made it easier. Social occasion? Almost. 😁

Myself my brother and my cousin poured a slab 7inch deep and 12 feet by 20, because of location we had to mix the concrete ourselves in a diesel mixer, split the job into 2 parts, probably the hardest I’ve ever worked but strangely it was enjoyable.
@mofaz34753 жыл бұрын
Can you have a half'n'half shed base that's half concrete, half wood posts? I have an existing 6x4 slab and looking to replace 6x4 shed with a 6x10. Getting more concrete in for a full slab is next to impossible due to location.

Concrete is one of the things I really don't like to do. I have done enough decent size concrete pours for friends and it is really not fun and you never have enough people on hand. It's right up there with roofing but more anxiety since you have to get it done before it starts setting up. My only issue with yours is why didn't you pour up against both sides of the drain channel?
@TheRestorationCouple5 жыл бұрын
Just because the workshop slab is level and the drain isn’t. This way I figured the timber will come out easily and I can just back fill more accurately especially around the dpm. 👍
@isyt15 жыл бұрын
I’ve watched a lot of American vids on this and have noticed they always put expansion joints in to avoid cracks (looks to me like an inch deep line through the concrete at regular intervals). Is it actually necessary and do we do this in the UK?

The main slab is pretty much as large as you would go without. If needed I’ll just run the saw through after. 👍
@dannymurphy17795 жыл бұрын
I think the rebar must help prevent it, they call it 'anti crack mesh' , they do lay internal floors in the solid after all. and on a barn conversion they can be even bigger.

I thought that these days we are told NOT to have surfaces that create ' run-off ' during wer weather etc. We are told be Building Control at Local Authorities to have surfaces that let rainwater seep through and drain naturally into the subsoil . Which does not contribute to ' localised flooding ' when water has no-where to go and floods at lowest points in the locality etc ! Other than for footings etc , this type of ' concrete hard standing ' should be avoided whenever possible . 🇬🇧🇬🇧
@TheRestorationCouple5 жыл бұрын
It will have a building over it though? As for the section of path, it’s just replacing the 70 year old one that was there before. You are correct as to driveway regs though. It’s more about how you manage the water than what material you use, ie install soakaway, etc to avoid adding to mains drainage or surface water runoff. 👍
