I believe the best way to practice a song isn't just by trying to belt it out.
There is a specific sequence that works best.
And it doesn't really matter what style you want to sing.
That sequence involves starting out lightly (I don't mean airy, I mean little volume).
Work up gently how the vowels feel most comfortable in your throat.
(In my singing course "How To Sing Better Than Anyone Else" I thoroughly walk you through this process).
It's best to start with vowels first (no consonants and nothing to choke off the throat when singing like hard consonants such a G, NG, B, P, M etc.).
Then little by little you can start to add more weight (volume) to the song.
Start with one verse at a time. Don't jump to trying to sing the whole song through.
Once you have mastered the first verse, move on the first chorus. (vowels only).
Continue this until you have built up enough stamina to easily get through the song.
Determine what your Tessitura is. (the most esthetically acceptable and comfortable vocal range for a given singer).
You can grow your voice to increase your range, but it is best to start here.
So again, once you have mastered the vowels, gently start adding back the consonants.
You will find that you are training your throat to stay open so it is not "closing off" when you re-introduce back these vowels.
When you get really good at this, you can start bumping the song up one tone, then two tones and so on, to increase vocal range.
I hope this was helpful.

My singing teacher always says to me "sing only the vowels -A E I O U - of th lyrics. It has to sound like a single stream of air". The best advice ever. It's not easy, but it pays. (sorry, english it's not my mian language)

@@kentamplin Glad that i stumbled across this issue :), or "issue". Just glad that i found myself doing it without knowing why. Felt good, relaxed, and empowering by just humming along some songs, that usually are in a high key performing. As you said, the truth's in the singing. And yes, ofcourse i've bought your course. I have adjusted my gaming chair, so that i can more easily reach the feeling for my abdominal core muscles in singing. Greetings from northern Sweden

KTVA. ⚡️ I hear (and sing with) singers who are constantly struggling with consonants and transitions, and these ppl are considered good singers at their pro level (they get praised by ppl every night). 👏🏼 If anyone knows a more experienced/proven vocal instructor, or a more comprehensive/proven vocal course out there, plz let me know.

This was very helpful Ken, I'm a self taught rock singer and I've been doing some voice lessons. I picked the song "The Kill (Bury Me)" by 30 Seconds To Mars and the chorus starts with a consonant (Come) its somewhat staccato and all the accents are on consonants (Come, Break, Me, Down Buty Me, Bury Me before getting some vowels and some softer consonants, and it has been challenging my o navigate the epiglottis. Will try this suggestion. Also I had the same issue where I could sing in the range of the song during vocal me exercises, but while singing the song it would feel insanely high. Will try to see if I can find it a half or whole step down and work up to the original key. Would also love to learn the distortion of the vice Jared Leto does in the song, but am less focused on this now as I am on correcting some of the bad self taught habits. Thanks for a great video.

American Idol are always trying to push the singers to reach tones like celine dion, mariah carey or Aretha, we all can't be pushed that far. most of us are average.
@kentamplin
@kentamplin 6 жыл бұрын
That's right, Cheryl. Not everyone wants to reach that far. But we're all capable of vocal growth if we do want to work for it. And we're all free to say "I'm fine just where I am!" We can be happy being ourselves, as we are, or we can strive for more. That "more" takes a lot more work, and not everyone can be Aretha.

A personal observation having covered hundreds of songs. Beyond pitch and tone, actually learning the specific vocals in the song, line by line, will make the song much much easier to cover. You think you know the vocals of a song until you actually study them by actively listening to, and analyzing them. When you study them carefully, you will almost always find that the actual vocals are EASIER than what you previously thought from your history of passive listening. Learn the song!! Your aim should be to lay down your own vocal right on top of the actual vocal and have them coexist as one. Cheers!

You're so right singing a song that fits your voice and your tone, I can all most bet you there's a lot of older professional musicians singers out there that didn't think they was going to be playing the same music 40 years later when they wrote it because if they have known that they probably would have wrote the song in a lower key compared to the original key that it's in.

Hi Ken, the conductor of this choir is often telling us we need to emphasise the consonants more, like B, D, G, and a singing instructor ages ago told me consonants are good for voice placement. What do I do ?
@kentamplin
@kentamplin 5 жыл бұрын
If you want to be in that conductor's choir you are going to have to do what they say. That doesn't work well with solo singing of modern and popular songs. It's fine for choirs and amateurs. You can listen to them or you can listen to me. Who do you want to sound like? A voice in a choir or you?

My problem is how to find practicetime in the first place? My mom is a teacher so she has to work from home. She has online meetings, reads books, prepares her next lesson and so on in order to be up to date with her information. And I also have to brothers who also have to do homeworks. So I can't be loud because they have to concentrate. And I'm not even trying to be loud. For that reason I Isolate myself in order to have at least a little practice time. Right now I feel like I'm stuck. I can sing with distortion, I can blend my voice perfectly I can "hear" what happens in others throat and apply it to my own. Now I wish I would have the amount of practicetime I had in the past. But I don't.

Hello and Good day to All! I am new to the channel and in leu of listening to music itself, I find myself lost in appreciation to a genuine vocal teacher who speaks in a language that can actually be understood, and English is my native language. I am in awe of the knowledge and experience Mr. Ken Tamplin brings to the table. Mr. Tamplin's vocal academy has renergized my interest to further my knowledge of singing techniques of all genres. Mr. Tamplin's Vocal Academy KZbin page, along with his website and forums, provide more information on vocal techniques/awareness to help an individual better themselves as a singer, as well as to further understand singing as it pertains to the artform of historical expression of which it formed.

After 3 days into your course I unblocked so many things, and connected more dots than 25 years of singing lessons with different teachers. I want to cry tears of joy. The work is just starting, but I feel like I'm finally going to progress after reaching a severe plateau for years and it made me miserable. I see light at the end of the tunnel. Thank you so much.

Is it fine to sing an octave lower if you have a deeper voice like me? I feel like I have to sing like that because it strains my voice when I don't. Great video again, Ken.

Yes, Wyatt. It's best to sing where our voice sounds the best. We may grow the voice, or we may sing just a few notes lower, if we find that comfortable.

Hi Ken!! I thought i'd update you on my progress, particularly since you mentioned singing with passion. You may remember the disaster i mentioned on another video about singing in front of a large audience on a cruise. Well....I just got back from another cruise.... They have this competition on it called Pacific Pop Stars, it's like Idol, and X factor, that sort of thing. However...This time i had an ace up my sleeve, the lessons i have learned from your videos. So i entered the competition with Music of the night, didn't make it through to the finals on the first one, but still got a lot of good feedback from the audience. So i had another night of karaoke until the next heat so i got some practice for my confidence and hit the crowd with Minnie the Moocher, the audience reaction nearly lifted the roof off the boat! The next night i entered the final heat and entered with an old faithful, My Way by Sinatra. That one got me into the finals! I decided to go with my own backing track of Bring him home from Les Miserables, never performed it before but practiced heaps before hand and knew the song inside out. Before the finals i was, again, nervous as hell. However i only used one glass of wine and one shot of Vodka instead of the 6 i had before my last performance, so improvement there. Anyway, before the show i started warming up with the vocal warming techniques you showed us, my voice was still a little raspy, possibly from the air conditioning, but i drank a heap of water and had a throat lozenge which seemed to do the trick. So all i needed to do was wait backstage until i was called out, which seemed to be the longest 10 minutes of my life. Thankfully i was first out. The backing track started playing, again the voice was shaky for the first few lines and i was like "Bugger, not again!!!" But then the nerves settled a bit, and i was on track. There was a little crack in my voice at one of the higher sustained parts, but it didn't throw me thank goodness! So the song finished and the judges said their bit, they were very good with their criticism, they all noticed that the nerves did affect my voice, but also commented on my good use of vibrato and they loved how i sang it with such passion and the fact that i sang without lyrics. However one of them said to work on strengthening my diaphragm so i don't lose power if the nerves take hold. Even one of my mates who had heard me sing previously said he noticed a definite improvement in my singing. So all i have to do now is beat the nerves and i'll be on point!! Any tips for that one??? Hahaha.

Spacegoat92, Keep doing what you're doing. The more you get up and perform, the less "out of your element" you will be when things such as delays, choking a note here or there, nerves, etc. happen. Eventually they seem less magnified, and you can be more "in the moment" on the things that keep you on track, doing what you do best. I thought for a moment you were going to say that during the waiting period you downed another bottle or two. But you didn't this time. Good for you for the progress you have made. Use that as a feather in your cap to remind you that you've got this. Keep practicing and keep improving. Keep playing that movie in your head of having the crowd eat out of your hand during Minnie the Moocher! Hidy, hidy, hidy, hidy, hidy, hidy, HI!

Thanks, Ken. I've found these tips helpful, along with your course. I'm trying to keep phrasing as contiguous as possible while trying to learn to "open up" the vowels sounds, and also trying to "cut back the air" with a bit of glottal compression/holding the breath while singing. The issue I've had is that a lot of the repertoire I have to perform daily are really fast litanies which are very consonant-heavy. I don't know if there are pop performers watching this who are regularly performing a lot of rap or other fast consonant-heavy or staccato repertoire while they are trying to better their open-throat technique, but it poses its challenges. Of course, the traditional chant technique incorporates quite a bit of "mumble," and the evenness of tone is traditional, as well. Softening or "faking" some consonants is also somewhat traditional. I keep reminding myself to "open up" whenever I can, and to "keep it light," using the resonance to carry the sound. I've also added a few more songs to my repertoire which have more lyrical singing passages. Anyway, thanks for your suggestions. I could request another instructional video with more advice about performing rap or auctioneering or other consonant-heavy performance repertoire, if you want.

I attempt two other languages than English..Italian, being one of them. I like to sing along to Italian songs, but don't always know what the real words are....so I do a kind of vowel sound match...to "sing along" and if and when I do learn the words, I've established the sounds already

Can people 60 plus still sing and still sound good? Even most of the older greats, (Paul McCartney for example) are starting to show signs of vocal aging, and compensate by changing keys a 1/2 step, or in some cases 1 or 2 steps down! Even John Fogerty has lost that full bodied "growl" in his CCR voice 😟. But some don't seem affected, like Tom Jones, or Ann Wilson.

Depends on the person. How they sing, lifestyle choices, general health are all factors. There is nothing magic about the number 60 that dictates ability.

Sara, what you say is very insightful. So many people that think they are "cursed with a bad voice" simply do not know how to properly operate their instrument, which in this case, is the singing voice. If I handed a saxophone to a great "natural singer" and asked them to do a wailing solo, they probably wouldn't have any idea how to work it, and it might not sound so good. At all. It's a myth that you either are born a natural singer or you're not. There is a HUGE area in-between those two extremes that learning REAL vocal techniques that great singing depends upon can bring a lot of skills into the picture. The more you learn, the better you can become, with true, focused practice. There are all kinds of bogus "vocal coaches" who do not have hundreds of examples of them demonstrating difficult singing. What they "teach" you won't help. What I teach you comes from a lifetime of seeking the best vocal teachers in the world and sorting out who was right and who was not. If you LOVE to sing, then LEARN to sing. Yes, it CAN be taught. And THEN you will have a much better idea of what you are doing. MUCH better! 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊 I'm glad you found me!

I'm glad as well... for a long time I've searched around the internet and only found vague explanations from "coaches". It's not like I sing out of tune, however, I'm sure I am not using the full potential of my voice. why be an "ok singer" when we can be awesome singers, right? anyway, I'm very excited to learn! also, thanks for taking the time to write such an inspired answer
