If I may add something. Practice without the guitar and make it a mind game. Imagine playing or practicing as if it were a dream. Hear everything and see it all, even the little mistakes and perfect it in the imagination / dream. The more you'll do it, the better you will understand and the more effective it will be. I'll do this for about 20/30 minutes each day. Personally I separate the practice sessions (mental / physical) because that seems to work the best for me. Hope this helps someone. ☺️

Hi Tatyana, You have helped given me a much more clear plan for structuring my poor practice time. I am very much a novice having all the problems you mentioned, tension, technique, imagining what, how, why you want to play. I have not yet had an epiphany in my playing, yet maybe one chord, note, piece of music or something just strikes me...then eureka, I've found it! Not yet, but trying and letting things flow. Thank you kindly. God bless and keep you safe and at peace.

Can you teach us how to train your left (or fret board) hand to curve away from the guitar to improve the fingers' angles pressing on the board? Also, how to press down with little enough pressure when playing fast and accurately. Thank you so much for making these videos, your music amazes me, and it is neat to hear about your practice techniques especially that you don't practice for endless hours every day is fascinating. Don't be shy to come to the United States (if it is feasible and you would like to). Though I am not in a big city/state you would come to anyways, it would be amazing and everyone would love you here.

I know from personal experience that what Tatyana says is absolutely correct. Infact with only one hour of practice each day, you can achieve and advance your playing A LOT! However like Tatyana says, it is crucial that you do each and every little thing 100% correctly, otherwise you are wasting your time.

That is very good advice. I have a question about varying interests. I enjoy playing classical, acoustic and electric (Lead - Country and Rock & Roll). My biggest gains have come from acoustic by just playing songs that interest me, and having been in a church band years ago. As I am not currently in a band it just makes sense. To achieve the most gains in all three areas what would you suggest as a practice schedule? I was toying with the idea of just concentrating on one instrument, my classical guitar, until I master it, then moving on to one of the other guitars. What is your advice?

I agree too that only a few hours is best for practicing, and too many hours hurts especially for my original music I'm composing for book trailers about comic books where I perform electric guitar with very thick strings like ones Stevie Ray Vaughan used, thick Boomers strings I like for the bass sound but only a few hours is needed to practice my original music themes.

Hi Tatyana, love your videos! Could you perhaps make one about how to find the right size guitar? I am really short (1,60 m) and trying to learn on my own, so there's no teacher i could ask. Right know i'm playing an old 3/4 guitar, which feels to small. I'm not sure though whether a 4/4 with a standard 65 cm scale wouldn't be to big for me.

When you say practice you mean hands-on guitar practice. Obviously there are other things such as theory, ear-training, transcription, jazz harmony etc which might require more hours a day. Is that right? It's a limit on physical practice but there may be (many) other "non-physical" musical activities.

Sorry but i have an question about this video: taking in consideration what you´ve said, i should study 3 hours a day. Thing is, i´m playing a piece that´s really hard (prelude bwv 997) and, for example, i had defined a goal: to see the last part (wich is the hardest) of the piece in one week, but it took more than i expected, so i had to study the piece for 1 and half hours a day, and i didn´t completed the goal in time, being the goal completed in one week and a half. So, my question is: if we are dealing with pieces of an harder difficulty for a middle term goal (like playing the piece for a competition or concert in 2 and a half months),what should i do to study more effectivly in less time, even though i did it, i would just like to you to comment this, because im an young player (15) and i study for, at least, 5 to 6 hours a day, with 1 or 2 breaks in between, and i need that time. So, how can i reduce that time and still make the same progress? Thank you.
@tatyanaryzhkova7 жыл бұрын
How exactly do you practice the piece? What are the main problems you are struggling with? You can reduce your practicing time making each repetition right (avoid repeating mistakes), make it in very small/short parts (2-3 measures and less), understand where EXACTLY is the problem (special technique, you don't know fingering exactly, you have no idea how it should sound etc.). Sometimes it's more helpful (and save a lot of time) to find the real technique problem (slurs, barre, arpeggio etc.) and NOT to play 2000 times the part of the piece, but to find right exercise and practice it more concrete at exercise or etude. It can save you time and develop your technique :-)
@tatyanaryzhkova7 жыл бұрын
And of course you need to set realistic goals ;-)
@joaopedroguitar20017 жыл бұрын
Thanks for awnsering my question, but the problem is that i do exactly what you´ve said: normaly i separate the piece ( especialy bach because,for me, its easier to separate his pieces) in 3-4 measures if that exact measures have a problem or error, than i go check with my teacher, he says what the problem is (most of the times) and i study at home, repeting the measures around 5-10 minutes and then i play the whole piece. That alone would be 50 to 1 hour and 10 minutes, but when i have 2 more pieces of the same difficulty (capricho àrabe and El ultimo tremolo) and i still have to do the warm-up and technique ( 1 hour), doing the maths: 1+1+1+1=4 hours, being that the time i study a day, taking some exceptions (like my other comment), taking them about 5 to 6 hours. So, what can i do? Or is it becuase im learning and i have to practice this time? because sometimes i think that this is normal for me. And thanks for awnsering my question again :) .
@tatyanaryzhkova7 жыл бұрын
When I say "the best time for practicing is 2-3 hours a day" I don't mean that it's forbidden to practice longer :-) Specially if you say you are very happy with practicing 5-6 hours - great! The answer why you need more than 2-3 hours could be that the pieces you are working now on are probably really difficult for you now. Example, if the piece consists of 100-200 measures and you separate it in 3-4 measures and for EACH single block you need about 10 minutes and it happens with each measure, then it means that the piece is really difficult for you. I don't say you don't need to do it, but it means you need to work much harder (longer). How you can recognise if the piece is yet too difficult for you: if you need to work on quit each measure. So you have 3 opportunities: 1. not to choose too difficult pieces (if you want to practice less), 2. to choose difficult pieces, but not to have 2-3 such pieces at the same time, 3. to choose really difficult pieces, work really hard and long and be happy with it :-)

It's often said that "practice makes perfect", but that is not true. What IS true is that "practice makes permanent". If one practices with incorrect technique, one will permanently make that poor technique an element of one's performance.

My facebook account is marga casim. I am no longer in America. I am in Paradise now. Philippines. I can only wish you will play Arioso by Luthier Johann Sebastian Bach. It is Beautiful like you. A beautiful lady performing a beautiful Aria on a beautiful guitar. I will watch and listen to your video while watching the beautiful sunset by Manila Bay, imagining you are sitting next to me. A man and a lady playing her guitar. Our Silhouette in violet sky of silently sailing clouds, and orange red glimmering waves of sea. Under the swaying purple leaves of twilighted coconut trees. With dear old Earth, by our side, in tacit wonder. And it whispers to its rising moon and stars of night, "Tatyana is singing Arioso with her fingers in her strum." The moon and stars were stunned and whispered back, "That's her? The lovely legend lady, the mermaid with her magic guitar?""Yes. She swims across 5 oceans every 500 years to find the man who loves Arioso""Finally. She found him. The spell is broken." "Now. She can play... The Sacred Aria""She becomes...""A Goddess"Here. Wishing you will grant. Although I am most unworthy. Arioso.
