Taro is a popular root vegetable in Egypt and known as kolkas (also the word for taro), stew taro is a favourite way to cook it.Silverbeet or chard is added for colour, and the fragrant taliya (fried garlic and ground coriander), which is stirred through at the end, can also be used in other soups and stews including molokhia (chicken soup with mallow).

Yay, I didn't know that Pai made a taro video!! Also, I read that you have to make sure you cook the taro all the way through or else it can be poisonous. I'm sure Pai already knows this. But for people cooking at home be careful 💓

Thank you for the tutorial. I hope I can make nice dumplings with some Almond flour and baking powder. I'm trying to find a good alternative for Yucca/cassava/tapioca . This may be a less starchy root to use in cooking.

Thank you for making this video, are the small taro roots the same as ones I've seen called eddoes? (I think that's an Indian word for it).

There are different types of taro. Some dry land taro and swamp taro(which I prefer). They come in a range of colours too, yellow, white, pink, grey and dark grey. I cant describe the taste for those who have yet to try it because I havent tasted anything like it.

Yes, except in beverages they probably use taro powder or taro flavoured mix rather than the actual fresh root.

This can cause serious itching to the hands whilst peeling. Have you experienced this before? That is my experience every time. I was looking around and seems the best way to avoid the itch is to wear gloves whilst peeling and washing until it is in the pot cooking. It is also called dasheen.

I read online that handling raw taro can lead to skin irritation because raw taro is poisonous to consume. They mentioned the leaves, stems, and the corms. Yet, you are handling the taro corms with your bear hands. So, I'm confused as to which to believe. Am I able to handle raw peeled taro corms without wearing gloves? Do you prepare taro a certain way to avoid this? Is it only for a specific type of taro?
@AdamHotThaiKitchen2 жыл бұрын
Hi! She tells me "You can handle it fine if touching briefly. But if youre gonna be handling a large amount or for a long time, or if you have sensitive skin, you might wanna wear gloves." So there you are :) Cheers! Adam

do people add purple food coloring into taro flavored food items at restaurants? or is it natural?
@PailinsKitchen9 жыл бұрын

I would also like to know the answer to this. I found an article saying how there is a layer of a mild toxin under the peel and that you have to blanche it first, and only then peel it. Since, I'm sure Pai would mention this as she uses it often, I'd say the one she has is a different type. Which doesn't help me :o)
@77cns2 жыл бұрын
@@jaromir_kovar I wear gloves, wash and scrub the small taro(s) and peel them raw, wash well... THEN I cook in soup. If I handle raw taro without gloves I have a terrible reaction. Delicious in soup

Hi, con-sway mak mak 555. I just have a quick question about taro cooking. Is it normal for the small taro root to be still slimy after an hour of steeming it? I need your answer as soon as possible please, I am cooking taro pearls from your recipe on KZbin and need to start mashing the taro up but if it's not normal for the taro to be slimy after cooking then I'll trhow it in the bin.. Thanks.
@kizomanizo Жыл бұрын
You can eat it while still slimy if you have cooked it for that long. That means that it was harvested immaturely. A good taro is smooth and creamy when steamed or boiled. NEVER EAT OR TASTE AN UNDER-COOKED/RAW TARO. It itches so bad, you'll regret!
