Not sure if you like suggestions or not? That’s a great sized bin to make a ton of aged bedding in advanced, then you can store it in 5 gallon buckets for future use. What makes it much easier for me is to put a small brick of coco coir in a 5 gallon bucket and then add about 2.5 gallons of warm water. Let it hydrate, I add more water if needed, I want it like a soupy mess. Then I add the spent coffee, eggshell grit, Azomite, humachar, ashes, Neem seed cake, a 1/4 cup of blackstrap molasses, a sprinkle of Mycorrhiza fungi, a little kelp meal-mix well. Fill a tub or wheelbarrow with shredded cardboard, shredded paper, dried leaves, a little fresh cut grass if available, some starter castings, mix dry materials. Then I pour about half the wet mix over the dry material. The warm water seems to help with absorption and this helps coat the dry materials better so there isn’t clumping, as well as it’s more comfortable on ky hands, lol. The material usually shrinks to less than half the bin and I can add more dry materials and more wet mix. If I’m lucky, I’ll have some previously aged bedding to add to this too, so it will be teaming with microbes after a week. My aged bedding starts turning blackish after a few weeks and when I start using it the worms get into it right away, no waiting a few days. This really speeds up the whole turning over of bins and I always have bedding ready to go if I find a problem in a bin. Since it’s already composting, it seems to hold moisture a lot better than when I used to put fresh bedding in the bin. I store some aged bedding under my Vermibag and my Hungry bin, so it can absorb any excess moisture from the CFT’s. Typically the top will get dry, but it is very moist underneath, so I have optional material for a dry bin or a wet bin. I hope this gives you some ideas. I’m enjoying your videos.

I always like and enjoy suggestions. Especially when they are detailed. Looks like a great recipe for making the bedding. Thank you for sharing this with me.

My "little" helper thought you could move your arm that quickly. Great set up. The worms will "explode" when you introduce food to the bin with the worms.

Brewin' some cold coffee the worms. ☕ 😃 Do you find the worms try to escape during the 1st week after start up? Allowing the bin to prestart with some castings is a good move. Get the microbiology a chance to get going. 👍

No, and since I have took the lids off the bins I haven’t had any issues with worms crawl on the sides. The lid was keeping in so much moisture. I placed the worms in and gave them about five days. Then only fed about 1/3-1/2 of a normal feeding. After text everything was back to normal.

so peatmoss is good to use? i read it had to be changed every 2 wks to avoid some kind of poisoning Is this correct or not?
@GardeningwithBarchuckin5 ай бұрын
I haven’t heard about this and I haven’t had any problems with my worms with using peat moss. Also there is other “ingredients” I use with my bedding. Possibly if all peat moss was used there could be an issue. I’m not sure 🤔 I started with a worm bin April of 2020, and I have experimented with many variables, some that have worked and others that have not. If you are not sure and don’t want to risk experimenting, I would say not to use it and follow what you have read.

If the bacteria starts up in the bin it helps the whole system. I try to show how I’m doing it. But I am always open to suggestions to do tweaks or a total overhaul.
