When I took my TX journeyman’s exam I dedicated one entire week trying to organize the proper order of material to study. The NEC could be extremely confusing for lots of people, and I understood that and wanted to make sure that didn’t apply to me. Here’s what I did. Electrical theory (2 books) Bonding and grounding (1 book) Electrical exam prep (1 book) Basic motor controls (1 book) Practical calculations (1 book) Journeyman exam questions (1 book) Read the code book everyday It took me 3 months, 2 hours a day, every single day. NO EXCUSES FYI my boos told me “you can’t pass it, it’s a hard exam” I took it VERY personal. Got an 82 and immediately sent the results to him without saying anything but this “easy exam, if I had another week I would definitely get 100” 😂 That morning I drank a monster energy drink and I was playing Metallica and Led Zeppelin on my way to the exam. Could you please elaborate on how you mitigated the code book “being confusing?” That’s my biggest struggle. I ordered both volumes of Mike’s “Understanding the NEC Code.” I started the first one on my holiday flight with my daughter. It’s already helping a lot just with the basic ingredients and order in which the NEC is organized.

if anyone is wondering about getting the exam prep 100% is a must for anyone that values their time. Mike holts books has helped me understand the things that just were not registering with me. The illustrations helped me so much honestly that was a great idea to incorporate the them. I have both the illustrated guide to understanding the nec and the examination prep . Amazing products !

Mike, thanks for lifting up our entire industry. That career changing moment came for me in 2009 when I passed the NJ licensing exam. Once an electrician decides “this is my career, not just a job” everything changes and gets better. But education never stops and that’s we’re considered professionals in the industry. I wish every electrician took 35 minutes of their life to watch this video and take it all in.

Hey Mike, I turned out 2 years ago as a JW working in Atlanta. I am 26 years old and am a foreman making very good money for my age. It's easy to get content with where you're at when you are comfortable. Your videos have inspired me to create some discomfort in my life and take my carreer to the next level. I am making a commitment today to get your material and study my butt off for my master's license. I really admire what you've done and are continuing to do for this industry. Reading all of these comments has really given me hope. I’ve been working hand in hand with a master electrician for what’s soon to be 2 years. Early on I tried watching some of these videos and other materials to really learn the fundamentals and nothing would stick. It was like reading a book for the bar exam. It wasn’t plain English to me at all. At this point I’m comfortable running wire and wiring all sorts of stuff. My lack of knowledge does make tracing down issues on service calls hard. It’s not to say my boss isn’t a good teacher. He always takes time to explain the theory of things but I can’t seem to translate it into the work we do. Overall it’s been hard to truly feel like this could be my career over just another job. I give my self plenty of excuses as to why I haven’t tried to study again such as the long hours we put in. After reading through the comments I just really want to be one of these guys with a success story passing my limited test and having that first big win. Actually excited to get home and binge some videos. If anyone reads this and has some good recommendations on materials I can buy to help the process I’d very much appreciate it!

I agree 100 if you learn every word of this book you shouldn’t have any problem passing the test. I came in 20 to USA my English is my second language and I’m studying this book every night I don’t have enough time but even in 10 minutes is impressive all that you could learn. Easy examen brother. One advise that may help you. Make sure you study for the journeyman exam and not for the master exam. I hope this makes sense to you.

I didn't finish high school, so I understand about 'thinking' you not good enough to pass the exam. If you don't take any short-cuts, you'll do great. In todays world you should consider getting a different employer.

I passed my exam without even studying. i just finished the apprenticeshi, and a month later i went and took it. I was like fk it I'm gonna see what is like. Everything is in the code book, and the calculation questions have two that look like that's the right answer, but if you do the right equation, you will get it right.

Michael, You are correct do the volume one and two first so you understand the rules and are familiar with where the rules are at then you do exam prep to learn how to do all of the calculations.

Failed 4 times … all the content I have been given is non related to test I’ve taken.. Masters!!
