A lot of people wouldn't have bothered with a small harvest. A true homesteader never lets anything go to waste. I recall a year my mother-in-law and I did 91 quarts of corn for the freezer. Half was for her, but they moved away without taking it so we feasted for the next year!

Thank you so much mister! My ambitions were larger than my common sense this year, put way too many rows of sweet corn in and it will certainly go bad before myself and the mrs can eat it. So just blanch, bag, and freeze, easy enough. Also thanks for what you said in the beginning about how to tell when corn is ready to pick, I honestly didn't know. I subscribed to your channel so when I get free time Ima go through everything and see what other nuggets of knowledge I can learn from y'all. Thanks again!

Glad you were able to get some corn, its still heart breaking to lose most of your crop. When I put up corn, I cut off the cob before parboiling, and place into a large glass baking pan, adding 1 to 2 cups of water and bake in the oven til corn is hot. ( oven temp 250 or so ) Then after the corn has cooled, I pack into freezer bags along with the liquid. I have always had great success with this method. When corn is in oven, stir every now and then so corn on top won't dry out. I also scrape the cobs with the back of the knife, keeps from dulling knife. Have a great day and thanks for sharing. I just had to share a little story after seeing your corn worms. I used to work for a farmer at his Farm Stand. he sold there and he also sold to several local grocery stores. I can't tell you how many women would come into the stand peel back an ear and if they saw a worm would literally dropped the ear on the ground and take off running and screaming sometimes even with their arms in the air. some of the older ladies would tell me that if that little worm was fat and happy then she would be too and just lick it off on the ground and take the corn with her I still laugh when I think about all of that. so sorry you're having so much trouble with those darn things. I have really been enjoying your Channel. I just found you last night and I know I will be a regular follower from now on thanks so much for sharing.

I have a lot of Stowells Evergreen Corn, and I have not planted any of it yet, but I will now. I read so many different reviews of it, I wasn't sure of it. I finally realized that it's all about what they use to feed it, and where it's being planted. Without those two things seriously considered, it just can't grow well. Corn takes a lot of feeding, and why people think that going organic, means they can put nothing on it, rather than using chemicals, is crazy. People need to learn about natural feeders too. My father-in-law used to put fish parts in the ground with his corn, an old Indian way of planting. My grandfather always said to plant without manure was crazy. Thank you for a great video, and I will be planting my Stowells corn now too! Bless, Sheila PS I found another new open pollinated, organic Sweet corn. It's called "New Mama Super Sweet Corn." It grows in the North, but I'm giving it a try anyway.

When I used to deal with cutting the kernels off for freezing, before i'd discard the cob, I'd nibble at the ends where there was good corn still to be had once the knife work was done with it. You have pigs and chickens to feed, so its not going to waste, but I sure did enjoy nibbling on that freshly boiled corn on the cob. Good memories! : )

It was nice to hear that this corn had a small cob. Did you find that your stalks put on 2 or more ears, and even put out multiple stalks. Mine have and some of this stalks are also growing an ear. I hope it tastes as good as you say. I read that it has good shelf life if kept in the husk and the end tied closed. I hope this year is a better year for this corn, God bless!

So sorry, my friends! I can certainly feel for you. It's almost impossible to grow organic sweet corn here in Central Florida, too. Corn worms (corn borers) absolutely decimate a stand of corn in a matter of days. I've tried using BT on my corn, and it works if it stays dry enough.....but it rains almost every afternoon in the spring. Last time I planted a stand of corn I got about two meals out of it, and my chickens got the rest!

An old farmer showed me to cut the corn around the bottom of the ear, break off the stalk piece, then peel from the bottom around the ear. It really pulls the silks off. He was in his 80's and had grown & sold corn all his life. Whats this information about the type of pot. I use stainless cookware. The graniteware water bath pot is too large for my stove or my hotplate, folks remember when you replace your stove the glass top isn't recommended either, glad I am old too many new things to learn now. I use a hot plate burner out of my camper outside. I am looking at getting a portable gas stove like the Homestead Kids have. Thumbs up for your corn, I jar canned and also make corn relish. Getting none GMO/organic corn out of Georgia this year. My local farm is also non-GMO corn, but he sells out every picking, has cars lined up.
