At least a couple major engine manufacturers teach techs that up to 1 pound pressure loss in the first minute is ok. I monitor that when making warranty claims but for other repairs I figure its either tight or it gets fixed. Good video!

Thanks for your clear videos, I've really found the videos on this channel to be the best guide to small engine repairs, especially when working on Stihl 2 strokes. Been doing this test today, struggled to get it to seal at the block offs properly but I think I got there in the end. It was holding vacuum but I couldn't hold the pipe on and pump pressure in without an extra pair of hands as my vacuum tester doesn't reverse to do pressure so was using a cycle pump. Will be trying again to get some pressure in to it tomorrow, might have to adapt my coolant pressure tester instead. I'm pretty sure it's drawing air in somewhere as it has a pretty unstable engine speed on the taco when I was adjusting the carb after fitting a carb kit and new impulse tube. The problem originated on a chainsaw engine that would stall at idle. I tested the carb holds pressure and doesn't leak past the needle which it doesn't so am lost for a cause if a pressure test doesn't highlight a loss that the vacuum test didn't. Any suggestions please? I know there's some scoring in the cylinder but it was running and had power. Would slightly reduced compression (measures about 100-105psi) be the cause of the erratic idle and a source for the additional air intake by leaking from combustion chamber to crankcase?
@VintageEngineRepairs2 ай бұрын
Thanks for the kind words :) any scoring will show itself most at idle. The engine may idle up, it may idle down, but won’t stay stable. At this point you need to address that and if it’s worth the repair financially. Before this you need to find the source of the scoring or it will happen again :/
@superloopy24v2 ай бұрын
@@VintageEngineRepairs Thanks, I've been back to your videos a couple of times during this fault finding expedition. I'm assuming the scoring is due to the split impulse tube as I imagine that was pulling additional air into the crankcase making it lean. However it's not my saw and it's a used purchase for the owner so I don't know the history. It probably means I'll get it to run as well as it will until they decide to replace the cylinder. I made a 6mm metal plate to seal the exhaust and used some thicker rubber behind it as the piece of inner tube wasn't sealing well, I also bought the tool to seal the inlet with the connection point for the tester but with the carb off that leaves the impulse hole open so I plumbed both to a T piece and tested from there which finally worked well after lots of failed attempts to get a good seal. It looks like a cylinder kit in the UK is about £100-£120 for a Meteor or Hyway but everywhere looks out of stock so if it were mine I'd go that route when available.

Thank you for such a clear and concise production! One question ... during the vacuum test there's a settling-down period at the beginning: the gauge keeps dropping toward zero and it looks like the vacuum isn't holding. You keep pumping and wait a while, and eventually get a stable vacuum to begin the test. What's going on during that settling down period? How can you tell you're not seeing an actual leak? Thank you again. Absolutely excellent video!
@VintageEngineRepairs9 ай бұрын
Thank you! That’s the air bleeding past the piston rings as well as the rubber inner tube stretching and seals too! Keep pumping until you no longer see it drop :)

That sort of test will only show you if its bad. In college we tested them under water to find all the leaks. That is the short engine. That will pick up the small leaks.
@VintageEngineRepairs Жыл бұрын
Pressure tests will often hide an oil seal leak in 2 strokes as the sealing lip gets pushed down and onto the crankshaft. The vacuum test is the correct test to do for an oil seal. That’s certainly not something you want to do under water - or with any water for that matter.
@rolfgrosseholz1311 Жыл бұрын
@@VintageEngineRepairs I was trying to cover all leaks. The one under water i was talking about in college picked up a defect in the cylinder casting. Little bubbles coming out at 5 psi. Others had leaks at crankcase bolts on Victa engines etc.
@01bonny7908 ай бұрын
I understand the soapy water to check for leaks under pressure, but how do you determine the source of vacuum leak? You mentioned light oil, do you start dripping oil around possible leak points and watch for when the vacuum gauge stops dropping? Loved the video, it took a lot of the mystery out of performing the tests!
@VintageEngineRepairs8 ай бұрын
Thanks for the kind words, the only place that will leak under vacuum and not always under pressure are the seals. Therefore, yes very thin oil, or better yet 2 stroke fuel and oil mix. :)

I'm a little confused about the vacuum test. You did a pressure test first which passed, meaning there's no leaks, including past the piston rings, correct? If so, how does a vacuum test via the spark plug test the oil seals, if the rings tested ok? Why wouldn't the vacuum remain in the cylinder and not suck from the area around the crankshaft?

In addition, maybe a smoke test to seek out any leaks??
@VintageEngineRepairs10 ай бұрын
That is more for a leak down test, the pressures are way too low to show any smoke dissipation. Unless you some how pumped smoke in to the engine maybe!!! As a point of reference, a leak down test (with smoke) is normally done at around 100 psi, a pressure and vac test around 5psi.
