I used to get sea sick within 5 min after the boat I was on would leave port. That lasted for several years and must say that I have been immensely sea sick, literally hanging over the railing and throwing up until nothing came out. Then I bought my first boat, went out at sea and I still don't know why, but I got over my sea sickness. No matter how rough the sea now is, I won't get sea sick anymore. The one thing I always tell anyone onboard my boat is the moment they start thinking they get sea sick is to step forward and start steering the boat. 90 % of them don't have time to get sea sick anymore. Your suggestion to start breathing deeply is something I can attest to. When I was a military pilot we had this secret remedy for back seater who got air sick. Switch to 100 % and take deep breaths..........it would solve their problems. But I agree, if you are one of the people who get sea sick I feel for you, I know what you are going through, I experienced it myself and it is the most horrible feeling there is.

Seasickness is the body’s response to being poisoned. The confused inputs of visual cues versus inner ear orientation cues mimics the effects of many poisons. So the body acts to eject the poison - vomiting.

I really like the whole preventative section. It's all very accurate from what I've found as a marine biologist and a commercial fisherman. I would take it to another level though and say anything that might slightly upset your stomach on land will dramatically upset your stomach at-sea, if you're not used to the sea at the time (so after a day or so you can start doing these things). When I'm headed out to sea, I will not touch alcohol the night before, I will eat bland foods before the trip, and I will have maybe 1/3 of the caffeine that I normally have. But after the first day, I will start adding in fat and whatnot to my diet. You DO get used to it after awhile.

Sea legs fixed me. When I sat still, while getting rocked by the waves, I would get sick. Then I was told by a captain about sea legs, like going opposite way the waves are rocking. This stopped me getting rocked by the waves and shaking my stomach. When the boat goes up on your right side first lean into the wave, when it goes down the other side to your left side, lean into the wave again. This keeps you verticle at all times, your stomach stabilized, instead of the wave rocking you. This is how captains keep from getting seasick. You can sit and do it too, just keep your torso verticle at all times.

@@Tiffany-xr6un No, when the boat is angled upwards right, lean right to stay verticle. Yeah, if you get sea sick while snorkeling, there isn't much you can do without taking a product. You are the first person that I ever heard of getting sick by just snorkeling.

That's exactly what I was going to post. Bend your knees and let your hips get flexible. Let your knees absorb any pounding. You can Hang on to a bar... but don't let the bar push or pull you. Also keep your eyes on the horizon. Don't focus on the center of the boat and have the horizon on your peripheral vision. Focus on the horizon... its the most stable thing out there. Go outside and breath air. Remain calm and enjoy the ride. I find that yelling "woo hoo" and "yeah" helps when the seas are rough. The more positive you are, the better. And don't dwell on "am i getting sick". Think about how much fun you are having! Enjoy the ride!

I was a sailor in the US Navy in the 80s and 90s and I got sea sick my first time out. We were still in the Chesapeake Bay and the weather was calm. I did have a big greasy breakfast with lots of eggs. I have about 4 1/2 years of sea time and that was the only time I got really sick. There were a few times in the North Atlantic or going around the tip of South America when I would start feeling queasy or start getting a headache, but usually going above deck for fresh air and looking ahead as you said took care of that. Laying down in your bunk or doing the breathing exercises also helps. You would be surprised how much a 565 foot Cruiser that displaces over 9000 tons gets tossed around in big seas.

Damn, I went on a fishing boat off the coast of Galveston 2 years ago. First time out on the ocean in a boat. The ride out to where we dropped anchor was fine. About 15 minutes after dropping anchor and rigging my fishing pole, I felt really queasy all of a sudden. Then I hurled a minute or two later and then hurled 2 more times shortly after that. I don't remember eating anything that morning and I took Bonine like 45 mins before getting on the boat. I don't know how you guys in the Navy do it lol. My dad was shipped over to Vietnam in the 60s for the war on a boat. He told me that some of the people on the boat were sick the whole 20 something days it took to get over there.

Other then that I just know after I go out boating in my boat on rough days and come back to land the ground feels like its moving and when I start to feel sick or vertigo coming on because of it I pop in ear plugs and it all goes away it's a miracle lmao hope that helps a little!!

My wife gets seasick on an inner tube on a lake. We went out on an evening gambling cruse in February (hard weather month). I bought her the ReliefBand. A electronic device worn like a wrist watch. She was on the slot machines when the weather turned on us and she started to feel sick… she turned the band to setting 2 (settings 1-5 on the band), 5 seconds later she was back on the slot machine having a great time. As we left the casino deck on our way up to the dance deck, the corners and dining deck were all occupied with people seasick. I like to solo sail and there is never a good time to get seasick, so I take the ReliefBand with me just in case.

I learned, that seasickness in most cases comes together with high levels of histamine, i.e. due to meals with cheese, tomatoes,wine, beer. To counter them, you can use high levels of vitamin C. I always have a box of vitamin C powder on board and take about 300 mg per day with mineral water. It seems to work.

i had similar symptoms on every mean of transportation as a child - i found some cure. Shall the vessel size allows don't sit, don't lay down - stay on Your feet and let Your muscle/brain react to any vibrations / change of balance. Find right frame of reference for Your brain - like focusing on horizon on fast moving cars, or some vertical surfaces attached to Your vessel, when it swings like pendullum (case of a ship). It's all about two thing 1) conflicting frame of references, (eye signal vs gravity/inertia signal) 2) we have own "weak points" - certain positions of head where applying even small acceleration, even smallest variations in g-force makes us feel bad. Learn this weak point, understand the movement (movement of experienced direction of gravity) and let Your muscles do the job.

Thank you for posting--What works for me, and most people, is Scopolamine, the "patch" (with Scopolamine) MUST be applied, the night before as he mentions. How do you know if it is working? When you get up in the morning, you will find, that IF you have serous dry mouth--it is working. Here is one more thing, a sail boat works much better than a motor boat, why? Because the sail boat "bites" into the water and off you go, you do not tend to roll side to side. It is the side to side motion, that gets you. But use "the patch", and put it on the night before.
@CaptainLang
@CaptainLang 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment. It is important to also tell people when recommending the patch that some people get very sleepy on the patch and so they should take the appropriate precautions. You are 100% correct that the night before is the best time to start!

I'm the only one in my family that doesn't get seasickness. Whenever we went whale watching as a kid, even when the ocean was rough, I'd be out an about trying to get the best view. Meanwhile, my mom and sister would be stuck inside the tour boat trying not to throw up. My sister is the worst of us, and my mom would be fine unless the waves got really choppy. The only bad experience on the ocean I had was when I almost went overboard; we hit a pretty rough wave and I was leaning too far out. I was barely caught by a couple who were standing next to me. If they had reacted even a second later, I would of fallen into the water, which was freezing given it was off the coast of Oregon. The tour guy got upset with me since he had already warned not to do that. My mom was mad too since that scared the daylights out of her.

Thanks. Good tips, things to try...er, not very good methodology. (If it works that's okay) I'm a sea kayaker and I don't get sick very often, maybe 1 out of 100 long paddles off shore. I've tried ginger capsules, raw ginger, ginger candy works the best. One piece will do it. Bonine? My sickest bought was while taking this. Dramamine. Makes me sleepy. I went to Van Nuys Airport to go flying with a friend. I didn't want to be late, so I left my house an hour early, took some Dramamine, got drowsy, went to the wrong entrance of the airport, fell asleep, missed the flight, lost a friend. Don't look at details on board.On a whale watch boat I was explaining sea sickness and I noticed the pattern on their shirt. I got sea sick. I'll try the ear plug. Sounds interesting. When I paddle I don't consider that I've done anything unless I get beyond the breakwater and feel the ocean, when I get sea sick I notice the sea seems a bit different. The combination of two wave fronts creating a swirl. I'm surprised there doesn't seem to be a comprehensive study of sea sickness.

I remember being on a cruise ship going across the North Atlantic during a storm. There were 35-foot waves and people were literally emptying the contents of their stomachs all over the floor. Everywhere you went, you saw people crying, in pain and agony and praying for death to come swiftly. Meanwhile, I was walking around, wondering if perhaps there'd been a case of food poisoning at the restaurant. I didn't feel sick at all. In fact, I quite enjoyed walking around on the swaying floors because it felt like being drunk while being sober. So it was more funny than anything else. And then I went to bed, read a book for a while, before falling asleep to the rocking movements of the ship.

I suppose you're right. But I sort of take being "immune" for granted. It might be related to the fact that I grew up on a farm. I mean, when city folk smell manure, their reaction is often similar to that of those who were aboard the ship. But to me, it actually smells good! Not that I'd stick my nose in it or anything, but it smells like my childhood, so it's weirdly comforting. I never throw up either. I've only done it once when I had a stomach flu,and I was given something to induce vomiting, in order to clear the system.

I got carsick as a little kid. Just a 30 minute ride would be too much for me, would have to take multiple breaks and I’d normally throw up. Got a little better as I got older. I stopped throwing up but still wanted to. Then I started driving and I’m mostly cured. The sea is another story, I bought a 15’ scupper pro to fish with. Took it out today, lasted maybe 30 minutes. Enjoyed the first 5. I love shoreline fishing but kayak fishing looks so fun. But one of the worst feelings is being motion sick. And on a boat is the worst. You can’t pull over and take a break.

Do you think a wireless earbud would be effective enough, or would that not be deep enough for the desired affect? I'm getting on a 5-hour ferry in 36 hours and pretty nervous about sea-sickness. Really appreciate the video!

Regarding the wrist band/pressure point preventive, I have found it to be the more effective than the pharmaceuticals, as there is none of their side effects (drowsiness, feeling dopey, dry mouth). It works best by putting them on before bedtime the night before going out to give them time to take effect, and leave them on until back at the dock. I have never heard of the ear plug trick before, will give it a go. The use of ginger is a good idea. I wonder if peppermint would work.

@@CaptainLang the point on your wrist that the wristband electrocutes etc is the point that a workmate of mine mentioned he burnt using a cigarette lighter etc. He worked on cruise ships for years and said that if you burn yourself on that point you will never get seasick ever again. Interesting to note. Though I'm not sure how long the flame needs to burn you or contact needs to last to be effective long term

Staying busy prevents it the best. People get seasick on charter fishing boats because the crew is doing all the work, and using their brain while you sit there watching the waves. Get up and learn something from the mates or go up top and talk to the captain... Don't even drink two beers the night before. Drinking beer WHILE on the boat helps prevent seasickness for sure. If I start feeling it, I drink ice cold beer. It's just enough to calm my brain down I guess.

Im a US citizen and grew up fishing on lakes in Minnesota, now I live in the West Indies where I have attempted many times to go on the Atlantic sea to fish on small panga style boats. Well I made an attempt at it again yesterday and boy! I still cant get ahold of why i get sick. Thankfully I didnt puke this trip ad I tend to semi pass out when I puke. I really want to get ahold of this sickness so I can go out and fish with my significant other but it always gets the best of me each time. We also dont have access to the tablets like the US but the dramemine (sp) I have tried and still get sick I have also tried ginger to no avail I saw someone mention take the ginger night before I will try that one next time I go out.

Don't take ginger the night before it's only Dramamine or the patch you take the night before. Ginger helps if taken while your at sea. Also try watching my "Sea Sickness Prevention Exercise" video.

Another poster said dive in water. Always wondered about that. For me, the heat, even slightly warm weather and calm seas. I really think If I were distracted by an emergency, it would go away. Also, always wanted to try an experiment. Get in boat with blindfold on. Ride bay, ocean, bay,etc. Have some ask me how I feel in either location. Fishing bay, no problem. Soon as ocean, green. Must be in my head

Yeah it works I was in the navy as well. If you stay flat you're absolutely fine you don't feel much at all. Everything is great. But if you stand up while the ship is still moving, you gonna get sick again. So that's only for passengers. You get sick go in your room stay in bed you gonna be fine it's gonna pass in minutes. But don't stand up lol

I didn't know anything before a fishing trip I took recently, got 4 hours sleep, drank coffee, ate a sausage mic muffin then got on the boat, an hour in I thought I was about to die, the nausea was the best part, I held it in for 2 hours until I felt better, but there was only 10 minutes of fishing time left, should've puked, but my pride got in the way.

Alcohol is definitely a cure. But very small amounts in order to mitigate peripheral nerve impulses. And it must be taken in advance. 4 cl Aquavite every one or two hours. I combine it with a bun. I haven´t tested bagels yet but they will probably work quite well.

Seasickness is the result of body thinking it has ingested poison. Poisons can interfere with cerebral processing of visual and inner ear positioning... dizziness. This is why visual frame of reference that is static conflicting with motion causes body to want to expel the possible contaminant, and why going on deck to coordinate visual reference of horizon is helpful.
