Very good video! This was short, informative, instructive, and dense with information. I painted for a living for a while and I agree with everything you said. The Flood (Floetrol) and purdy products are widely available and great choices, much better than being too vague about product selection. Not a critique, but it might have been a nice touch to quickly add in what to do with the brush and bucket, while going to lunch, store, etc. I always bring cheap aluminum foil (or cling wrap - latex only) and use it to tightly wrap my brushes and rollers. If kept in a moderate temperature, I've found it can even work over night, certainly over a couple hour period. I also cover my bucket, roller pan etc, using foil or cling wrap. I always tightly close paint cans/buckets when not in use. Better to have to reopen, than to ruin or spill you paint. Regardless, your content is excellent!

I've been painting for many years and find acry;ic enamels a nightmare to use. I still still use oil based alkyd enamels for all interior trim work as I can thin the paint and use a 4 in "cigar" roller or a good bristle brush and I end up with zero brush marks( thinning oil paint is critical, but any moron can do it right- If you get brush marks, add a little more thinner until , when it levels you don't get anymore marks). My aversion to painting trim with "self leveling" acrylic enamels is such that if a client doesn't want oil on the trim, I don't do the job. I would be remiss if I didn't say how great acrylic enamels and acrylic urethane enamels look and feel when applied perfectly, but it seems that comes from using an airless, commercial grade sprayer and I've seen too many guys end up with health problems from spraying paint of any kind to go in that direction.

I have been trying to paint a desk top with acrylic paint and I've been re-sanding it at least five times because of the marks. I just heard about floetrol so I will use it. Is it best to use floetrol with a mini roller 1/4" nap or a purdy brush like yours? Also where can I get a similar filter like yours?

I added this product to white oil based paint and while I did not get brush stroked it yellowed the white. I didn’t put much in the paint, so while this product may be perfect for colors, I would not use it with white paint.

Each gallon will list what the maximum dilution is on the label. Ex: 1/2 pint per gallon with the Behr interior water based acrylic I’m using. However, thinning the pain until it flows off the brush and lands in your paint cup and insta rly disappear without there being a little mound that stands up is the best way to ensure it is not too thick. Notice how in this video he doesn’t measure the thinner, he eyeballed it until the smooth paint flowing off the brush lands in the cup and immediately disappears into the paint in the cup.

So being I got the behr marquis one coat paint is it still advisable to add the chemical into the paint to get a smoth finish on my cabinets or should I use a mini roller with 1/4" nap?

Always a good idea to use Floetrol to help with leveling on water based paints since they dry so quickly.

What if you're painting larger areas, like entire baseboards or doors? I've added Floetrol to paint (in all sorts of ratios), but continue to have issues. ANY help would be amazing!

Maintain a wet edge always. Do the same as this video in that you paint in sections then move on and leave the previous section alone. If you try to touch up after a few seconds you’ll create brush marks.

I don’t have an exact formula but I add enough until the paint flows smoothly off the brush and not in drip and drabs. Make sure you use Floetrol for latex paint and Penetrol for oil paint.

Edges on the painted top, or sides where it drips down? He worked the paint at 45º so that fixes the top. If you don't want paint on the sides, use tape.

Absolutely! I do the edges separately after the flats are dry so I can wipe any drips with a wet rag.

I figured they know better than me but alas, I am left with heavy brush strokes (using a premium brush). Now I have to sand it out and start over.

Water thins, but floetrol also slows drying time down which allows the paint to lay down better and eliminate brush marks.

Yeah I've been at a project for three months now and I'm stuck on the painting. No matter what I try, still getting brush strokes. I buy all the best brushes, still strokes. Used your method, got floetrol....yeah pretty much a waste of time. I'm beyond frustrated and this stupid floetrol crap just gave me false hope. Thanks for nothing!
