I just purchased my first DE razor, and I'm already hooked on it. It turns out that the method I was taught with shaving (from my father) was the same method he learned from using a safety razor and I never noticed. I just tried it for the first time today, and I already have less shaving nicks than I ever did with cartridge based razor (read: none at all). If anyone is in the Springfield MO area, the store Just For Him has a decent selection of men's grooming and headwear (as well as it being a cigar and pipe lounge) and it won't break the bank.

I just got my first DE handle and razor. It was certainly a nerve-racking first experience, but so far for the day, my shave is closer, and just running the costs for me, it just makes..... cents. ;). Thank you so much for posting these great videos! I can't dress as dapper as you or Preston either on the daily or at work (greasy job), but the advice for those special occasions make the difference, and make those days feel that much more special. Thank you and keep up the great work!

I’m 15/16 and the safety razor is really the best solution for me. I never cut myself or anything similar and it is just such an elegant way to shave. It’s cheaper and more environment friendly . Btw you can use those razor blades up to 5 times especially when younger with less and thinner hair

I bought a double-edged razor (switching from disposable) about a month ago and have never had so many cuts in all of my life. I'm switching back.
@varelion
@varelion 3 жыл бұрын
You are not alone in your decision. Bought a Leaf Shave Twig razor, put in Astra blades and had several cuts on the neck below the chin and a big one on the chin. I will try again with Personna blades and be very carefully, but I think I will go back to my Wilkinson Hydro 5. Never had a cut with this one, never. And I use one cartridge for 2 or 3 weeks with daily shave. 1:30 It's ridiculous to say that cartridge blades are dull after 2 or 3 days so that you get nicks and cuts . Quality counts here.
@Bungle2010

Are you using correct technique? Plenty of videos out there showing you how. Unlike a cartridge you can't just slap a DE on your face and shave any old how. Also try different blades.

@@Bungle2010 Well, I watched lots of nice videos on how to shave of all the youtube shave heroes. I stored videos of how to prepare foam, prepare your skin with oil and how to shave correctly. And I was very very carefully with my shave. And Personna blades are known to be sharp and gentle at the same time. And the main problem wasn't the sides but the chin and throat area. Maybe I still have some unevenness because of former acne. But I don't want to end up as a scarface. Perhaps i go to a professional barbour and see how he can cope with it.
@Bungle2010
@Bungle2010 Жыл бұрын
@@varelion Being known as "sharp and gentle" doesn't necessarily mean they are what is right for your specific face. The usual advice, and what I did, is to obtain a sample pack with a bunch of different blades, and try them all to see which works best. I ended up liking the Voskhods. Chins are a typical problem area as it is not naturally flat like a cheek. You need to contort your face to try and make the area as flat as possible. The neck can be an issue if you have a prominent adams apple. What I do is use my fingers to move the skin off it, making it flat. That makes getting a nick free shave in that area so much easier. Another trick I picked up, which is a good idea, is to grow your stubble out for a few days. That way you can more easily see in which direction(s) the hairs on your face are growing. Then you know which way to shave to always be in the direction of the grain. I actually recently picked up an adjustable razor, which seems to work better for me. I have it on one setting for my cheeks, and then turn it down for my neck, which is a more sensitive area. It's worth persevering as you save a ton of money. Cartridges are sooo expensive, and DE blades are dirt cheap.
@Gael32
@Gael32 Жыл бұрын
So, that bit about the cartridge razors being more likely to cut your face up in the long run is some bs if I ever heard it. Used Cartridge razors for years and if you change them when the indicator says you will very rarely cut yourself. On the other hand, single blade "Safety" razors have done nothing but turn my face into Freddy Krueger. Been trying to get the technique down, but if it doesn't improve in the next 10 shaves I'm back to cartridges.

I find that most of my shaving mishaps occur while trying new gear; e.g. I just received a new Parker 99r razor and the first time I used it has a few nicks. Even though it's considered a mild razor the weight and head shape are considerably different than the vintage Gillettes I generally use. Regarding septic pencils, I'm still using the same one I bought in college 40 years ago.

Wet your styptic pen before use to soften it. Also run an alum block over your face after your shave but before your aftershave balm. I run a 1948 Gillette Super Speed with Astra superior platinum blades or feather yellow box (hi-stainless) if I want to get aggressive. 20 minutes to shave can be a pain but I shave half as much as my mach 3 turbo (which I keep around for detail work and other parts of my body).

I'm not buying into the Glyder hype , there is absolutely nothing wrong with styptic pencils and they come also within a container similar to your Glyder. I have never dropped or broken mine and they are way cheaper and last for ages. Glyder is simply a rehashed styptic pencil idea at 3 times the price , where is the sense in that?
@prepperjonpnw6482
@prepperjonpnw6482 5 жыл бұрын
Agreed. And they come in multiple sizes. I like to use the thicker one for shaving nicks. I keep several in my first aid kits. After cleaning a scratch or cut I use to stop the bleeding and also to keep contaminates out. I raised two boys and got to be a rather competent medic lol. The thinner one can even be used to stop some nose bleeds, depending on where the blood is coming from. I also have a large alum block for sliding across my face after I shave. You can find them at most of the specialty shaving sites. Cheers mate

Great information, great suit! I have an issue with flaky skin/dead skin cells after I shave using a safety razor. Yes I do replace my razors regularly. I mostly use Williams shaving soap. Balms and lotions do not seem to help much. Neither does drinking more water. The only way it comes off, which it fortunately does, is wiping it with a wet, lukewarm cloth. But what is annoying is I have to do it 2 to 3 times before it's all cleared off. I am still trying to find a way to prevent flaking and what I may be doing wrong.

I have such a hard time with shaving as my face has a reaction to most soaps and it looks like I'm having an allergic reaction to something. The ONLY shaving cream that works for me is the Aveeno Colloidal oatmeal shaving cream you get for about $8.99 it's the only one that works. The fancy $20 shaving soap at the shaving store doesn't do anything for me, so I have to use the canned stuff. But hey, I get very little irritation with it and really like it.

I haven’t nick or cut myself from my acne, just saying. And for people with oily skin like myself alcohol in my aftershave is a godsend since it keeps my skin in control and it does help with my acne. Plus you totally forgot just a plain regular alum bar is what most people have used for a long time for nicks and cuts and razor burns.

Well.... how to prevent nicks and cuts is to properly shave. Find the type of razor that works for you. Multiblade, single edge blade. Pre shave cream with your shave cream that works for you. Take your time on the areas that are difficult for you. There is no reason to get nicks and cuts.
@kwedl

I'm surprised that you recommend not using cartridge razor to prevent cuts/nicks. I've been using 5 blade Gilette cartridge blades for years and never had a single cut even if i shave fast. But i bought my first double edge a few days ago with feather blades and my face looks like a battlefield, especially around the chin and jawline, just nicks and cuts everywhere. I did 30 degree, bought a good shaving creme, went slow, no pressure etc. i don't get it.
