The two biggest contributors to shoulder pain I personally had were 1) impingement due to crossover beneath my body, and 2) attempting to pull hard too early in the catch phase, rather than completing the catch and accelerating through a proper pull.
@alphaDad08062 ай бұрын
similar. I am trying EVF during catch phase and high elbow pull to avoid injury

I love scapula pushups! I've recently learned about them and love them. It feels so good on your back. I have a ton of stress between my shoulder blades and my spine and these are fantastic for therm. Also cat cow is good for learning how to find that little pocket to breathe for breaststroke to not lift your head too high.

This summer I noticed pain in my shoulder but I identified it as overreaching during the recovery of the freestyle stroke. So be sure not to do stuff your shoulder (plane of scapula) really can't do often or with too much load. With better rotation I fixed my problem.

Great video, super technical look at repetitive shoulder injuries is a good idea, as a D1 swimmer I can tell you I saw lots of people leave swimming one to two years into a career because of busted shoulders, it's pretty sad really.

I’m at my late 30s and just started learning swimming.. this video is so useful as I may have developed some shoulder pain and it is definitely my poor freestyle technique. Thanks for the info.

nice video! I had an left shoulder injury recently and did only kicks for few days. I believe it was due to my bad technic, my right hand side technique is good but not my left hand side. Now im improving my left hand side techniques

I wasn't rotating during freestyle and backstroke. After learning to rotate, the shoulders healed. I also have naturally weak shoulders and prior injuries, so I've incorporated rotor cuff physical therapy exercises in to my weightlifting routines.

Might as well give feedback. I started to have shoulder pain recently. I worked on the recovery phase. That was not useless, but was also not the issue. Turns out I have been generating almost all power from deltoids during pull phase (so shoulders). Wrong muscle group. Most power should come from latissimus dorsi (and pectoral). It is crazy that you can seemingly accomplish the same movement via entirely different group muscles. That information was hard to find. I have strong shoulders from years of push ups and pull ups, so I used that. And that got me fast (28s 50m waterstart). But that was wrong. Shoulders are only for stabilization. If that can help.

I'm an 9 time Ironman, and recently have found that pain is coming through my left shoulder only. I believe that your comments about "overuse" specifically touched me and will be focusing on the drills, rest and recovery. I've been concentrating on Bike/Run and rested the swim for about a month now and will be getting back to swimming soon. IM's are primarily freestyle. Is there a better stroke to ease back into than FS??

Question: Is the shoulder girdle disengaged/ dislocated during the early forearm (as in the beginning of some types of pull-up)? ... Are the lats and scapuar muscles engaged during the initial EVF? (Obviously they engage after the EVF but what about at the time of positioning of the 90 Degree after the catch? As I watch slowmo videos it does seem that there might be a dislocation of sorts with the activation happening directly afterwards?

Great video as always. Isn't torso rotation in freestyle the biggest technique aspect to protect the shoulders (apart from not crossing over)?

Thanks so much for this video! I've recently developed some minor shoulder pain which seems to match "swimmer's shoulder". Since I am almost exclusively swimming for my workouts, I probably have some muscle imbalances. I'm definitely going to add these dryland trainings to my routine and reduce my swimming volume a bit to see if it helps. I may consult with a doctor and physical therapist as well for some individualized remediation.
@RedStar183 жыл бұрын
Do the catch stroke after your recovery hand pass ur shoulder, basically before it hits the water. This also makes you faster and prevent the shoulder injuries.

blow out air, that's generally from water pressure, also if you swallow, that reduces the pressure in your sinuses
