Every season & planting I do this 1. dig well broken down compost into the soil (some chook poo blood n bone or whatever is required if at all) 2. I cover the whole area with cardboard 3. cover with wood chips. The cardboard is excellent at isolating pathogens from the plants and obviously helps retain moisture and eliminate weeds. I then top the beds up with (clean) compost throughout the season. But the cardboard is the key to it. Think of it like the "no-dig" gardening method but every time you plant a new crop carboard and mulch goes down. it will help build your beds too!

I live in zone 7 and what I find, at least with cherry tomatoes, is that the dense foliage helps to shade the intense sun at the soil level during extreme heat . My plants continues to fruit even during the hottest part of summer.

Thanks for the great video. I live in N. Florida. Can i successfully plant another crop of tomato plants or is it too hot. I’m definitely going with a drip system after all the videos I’ve watched. There are just too many advantages to not drag hoses and spray overhead with sprinklers.

You’ve mentioned that you don’t want to prune determinate tomatoes, but that’s for the suckers, not the leaves, right? You still need to make sure the plant is open enough for air to go through it, right?

Thank you! But....I have an issue with one of my tomato plants. The leaves on the whole plant are curling up. No spots or discoloration. It looks like it needs water but the soil is not dry!

Tomatoes sometimes do that if the weather has been especially dry or hot. They do this to reduce their exposed surfaces to the elements. However, there could be other reasons for the leaf curl.

I agree could be overwatering. Keep soil moist but not drenched for awhile and check if new leaves are normal. Could also be heat or an over spray of some chemical. Again, if new growth looks good the plant should be fine.

I recently moved to eastern Tennessee, between Greeneville and Jonesborough. It's pretty humid this time of year (August). Hello, I have a question about cucumber seeds. They are Korean cucumber. I planted seeds last year and they grew well. This year I planted seeds the same way, twice and they are not growing, why? How can I tell if the seeds are too old or bad? I bought the seeds from Amazon last year

I'd just keep trying, plant extra seeds. They could be bad from age, but does happen as well if seeds were exposed to moisture over the past year. Good luck

Usually happens when watering is not consistent and roots are allowed to dry for a time. Make sure you check soil regularly for moisture.

Was there any chemicals sprayed near your plants? Sometimes just a bit of overspray can do damage. If new foliage looks normal the plant should be ok.

@@loribethartist6353 I have had deformed tomato plants for 3 years and finally figured out this year it was caused by mixing bagged garden soil with manure. The only plants I had deform this year were the ones I used bagged soil on. Aminopyralid is probably the culprit because it gets eaten by grazing animals and stays in the manure.
