After watching about 20 videos on pricing, this one is by far the best. You give a good starting point, a reason why you started there, where you moved up to and how long it took. Everyone else is giving just one random number, or tells you to charge a day rate but never puts any numbers into perspective. Thank you! It's so hard to believe that you're only at 1.2k subs with videos of this quality. Usually I'm not a big commenter on videos, but this deserves all the praise it can get. Keep it up!

Excellent advice! One thing I've learned over the years is that it's very helpful to get the client to focus on the return on investment (ROI) the video will bring them rather than how much the video will cost. A good video should repay the client many times whatever they spent on production.

I have a tile business and we never take jobs unless we are actually going to make money after calculating all the costs of materials and labor etc. I started video production two years ago and now I only take jobs the clients are going to pay for. Those $100 projects are not worth the stress and time. Only do those cheap projects if you are new and need more practice. Take on big projects and always be confident. You can always watch tutorials if you get stuck. Start getting that money!!!

before we fill every one's head with making money, you first need a STRONG demo. this may involve having to work for free. get an idea of what you want to do, like, real estate videography, go out, find some nice homes, do some free to low cost projects, build a reel and a relationship. want to do short films, collaborate with other filmmakers and friends, and make some, it's hard work. it's fun work. it's when you jump in and start charging out the wazooo that you will meet shady clients who will not pay you at all, because they don't understand the work. showcase some behind the scenes, who knows, you may just end up becoming a six figured KZbinr. we are in an exciting time. let's all go out there and create. Great video bud!

Having been in this business for a while, I would say mostly good advice - however 70 percent overhead, while reasonable on a project that is 1800, is not reasonable on a project that is 100 000. Pay your day rate, pay your externals and then add 15-20 percent. to the total. Also, find out how much your owned gear rents for in your area, and charge that minus a package discount - say 30 percent. That si part of your externals.

LOL. Hes done it on good intents. But Vishnu dont think those costs or even concepts he talks about will run in our part of the world. Hes talking like he has a line of clients hence he's setting rules. In your situation and knowing India, if you say you will only work for half a day minimum, you wont be working at all. He forgets to say all this dictating terms can be done when you've proved your merit and there are people calling you everyday for work. Here if you say additional for all additional services they will throw you and go to the next guy. In fact our country policy is to expect freebies to the ultimate. If they pay you for the main course, sauce, salt pepper and a full fried chicken should be FREE. I come from an associated industry but it all works the same.

I've been running my business for nearly 2 years and I'm only just getting that confidence - and actually when you price yourself properly potential clients will take you more seriously. I have a couple of questions for you - Where do you source music for videos, if it's a subscription site like artlist etc., how do you charge a client for the music used? How do you present all of that to the client in the form of a quote? Thanks for the great tips!

@BARKERPRODUCTION4 жыл бұрын
Chase, this is good advice for beginners, but I think you should lose the 30% rule you mentioned at the end. As long as your are making the profit that you need to, there can be any amount of additional expenses. You can actually mark up all of those additional expenses, and make a producer fee. Bigger budget commercials often have a lot of costs for talent, locations, lighting, etc. The director, DP or producer fee might only be 5% of the total budget, and that's fine, as long as you're making a fee you're comfortable with.
@ChaseTurnbow4 жыл бұрын
I agree with you David! The 30% rule is definitely geared towards videographers who are doing most of the work themselves filming and editing. A "producer fee" is a great term and your example is the perfect exception to the rule. Example: I'm sure anyone would be happy with 10% of a $50K project and only spend a few hours managing/producing.

@madnessbydesign14156 жыл бұрын
Typically, on small shoots like he's talking about (corporate interviews, weddings, events, etc.), you'd have 2 cameramen (each with a camera). Unless you're shooting mid-level film-style, you don't usually get a camera assistant. 2 cameras gives you better coverage at an event (one camera might catch something the other misses), and gives you 2 angles to edit between for interviews. Film-style is usually 1 camera, but most small productions can't afford a dedicated camera assistant, since they also need audio, lighting (grip), etc...
@Dimrain136 жыл бұрын
I understand the project minimum but if someone if I had say 8 projects ongoing and I had an 2 hours to kill I would take them up for under my minimum. I think that turning down quick jobs because they are not at a certain price is not the best advice for this specific case. I would have went back to the pricing method that was originally talked about and say that it would be $350-$400. Thats still a bit much but way more reasonable than $800. Especially if its a rush job and they need some help. That can be paid back many times over as you might be their go to person from then on. If it becomes too bogged down slowly increase the price on them or outsource the editing to someone else. Over all there are some good rules for first times in here.
@ChaseTurnbow6 жыл бұрын
Good point. There's never "one size fits all" when it comes to pricing video because we are each in completely different places in the journey. If you talk to some really big production companies that produce nation TV spots they'll often say "we don't touch anything under $5,000". A solo videographer, on the other hand, might be happy to take on a micro project for $50. My minimum happens to be $800 at this time, BUT I sometimes do smaller jobs for existing clients that have paid me the "big bucks" in the past and I always make sure they know that "I don't usually offer any service under the minimum project budget". If I make an exception for them I want them to feel special so hopefully they'll use me again on their next big project.
@madnessbydesign14156 жыл бұрын
Dimrain13, I think what he's getting at is to not get bogged down with small projects (it's very inefficient, and eats away at your profit margin). I have a friend who falls into this trap far too often.The other thing to ask yourself is: Do want to be the go to person for someone who now expects you to work on rush jobs for less than usual pay? Rush jobs are usually more money for a good reason. If (as the KZbinr says) this is a good client that has paid for your services before, then you can remind them you will make an exception for them, and you may get a client for life. I'd caution against making that exception for a first time client, as people then tend to expect you to make that exception every time (I've seen this a lot)...

Good info. I just have one question: In your daily rate, do you include any travel time to and from your business location to the shoot site? In other words, if you quoted a 1/2 day (4 hr) rate and it takes you 45 minutes each way (1-1/2 hours travel time), does the travel time get added to your 4 hours leaving you only 2-1/2 hours shooting time? Or, if you believe you'll need 4 hours of shooting time, do you add the travel time and quote a full-day rate? Thanks in advance . . .
@ChaseTurnbow5 жыл бұрын
I typically build in a bit of "cushion" that allows me to not have to add on any cost within a 1hr drive. If its over an 1hr one way then it's understandable to add a mileage surcharge or whatever you'd like to call it. I try to build it into the cost without mentioning it so that it doesn't appear that I'm trying to nickel and dime the client. Most clients are very understanding if you're having to come a very far distance so definitely make sure your time and gas is covered!

Thanks for the tips. Recently people have been messaging me to film their weddings. I am a film student in college (graduating in may) I currently only own the basic film gear. Dslr, tripod, macro/telephoto lens. Im thinking of charging between $900-1k for filming and editing as I do not have wedding experience under my belt. Do you think that is too high or low? (I do have a drone and if they'll like aerial footage I would add it to the expenses along with a film assistant)
@PaulMatthewMedia5 жыл бұрын
LewseeAhh depends on how good you are and where you live. Definitely possible though. I just started doing wedding films (I’ve done 3). Only got my first camera less than a year ago and I charge between 1k to 1.3k. I just have a camera, monopod, gimbal, drone and lav mics. You’ll add huge value by investing in a few lavs. I personally like the tascam dr10. I’ve already booked 4 other weddings too. My advice, charge something like $950 or $1199. Uneven values make the cost look more thought out so people assume they’re getting a customer cost based on their needs rather than a cookie cutter rounded number that sounds made up.
@LewseeAhh5 жыл бұрын
@@PaulMatthewMedia I live in southern california. I'll look into the lavs. Any recommendations on lights. Im thinking of getting a ring light. I have the canon t5i which isnt best in low light. I also have the canon g7x mark ii which is great in low lighting and overall but it is not a dslr camera so I can't add external mics
@PaulMatthewMedia5 жыл бұрын
LewseeAhh no need for external mics. On board is good enough for syncing lavs. For lights, I recommend getting a decent and bright LED panel and light stand. You’ll be on the move most of the day so natural light will be fine. Utilize windows or other sources as best you can; it’s a lot of run and gun. Use the LED to light the dance floor and frame it as a nice hair light during the reception. Bring a sandbag too

Hi Chase, I have a question, when they ask me how much is it gonna cost, what can I say to them? Should I say an approximate price or I should tell them that I will check all the variables and make the price for their specific video?

Really good question! The answer is both. Here's how: 1. Never quote a price verbally during the first conversation about the project 2. If you only know a few details about their project, but they want an idea of price, you can provide a "ballpark estimate" or "approximate price" 3. If you feel confident AND you've "checked all the variables", provide them a specific price quote

Gravity FILMS I just quote $3500 a 2 minute video and $1000 a minute after that. minimum of $1000 up to one minute.

@@travis8665 $3500 for 2 minutes of anything? There is a huge range of budgets depending on the content and quality. Could be $1000, could be $100,000.
