Finally. Finally. Finally. An honest and tangible figure on how to price ones work. There are a lot of videos here on KZbin that have titles like this but NEVER give any figures and exact number we can base from. It’s mostly “it depends...” and I get why they do that, so for you to be open and honest about it is extremely helpful. I love you videos man, never has it been like a clickbait kinda thing. What you put on the title is exactly what we watch. I’m sure you’ll blow up on KZbin soon, brother. PS. If possible, can you make a comparison video on the 1dx mkii vs the c200? Finally, this is always the most frustrating topic. No one ever says how much they charge as if it has to be be some big secret. Video rates fluctuate wildly in the industry because one person charges $100 and the next guy charges $3,000 and there is rarely common ground. If the industry can stick to a baseline minimum we could keep the rates at a standardize level and not minimize our value. Thank you so much for this video and your honesty.

I am currently still studying a creative / engineer graduation and start to do music videos mainly for classical music videos. Right now my day rate is 350€ (which I was super uncomfortable with to charge that "much" haha) and I wanted to see where I can push this number to. The first time I charged more than 1000€ for a complete video, I felt super uncomfortable to be charging that much, but now it is so normal to me. It is funny how the perspective on money changes, once you commit to higher prices and clients actually agree. Thank you Danny, your work is amazing!

I've been charging hourly. I had a base rate and then charged hourly on top of that. So, no matter how many hours I worked, I always had a minimum I would be making. And I figured that if I ended up working less hours, I would not be charging a full days rate. Makes the client happy that they aren't overcharging. But it is a hassle and im thinking of going back to full day rates. Maybe if the gig is easy then I will do hourly or half days. But full day rates as you said is the better option. And the rates you mentioned are standard and very good.

I’m also a freelancer in Spain but I was always curious about how you guys deal with taxes in America when you have to give a price. We normally give our quotes without VAT but we need to pay the income tax from that quote. 21% VAT will be include in the invoice though. Also, we need to pay the national Health Insurance monthly, that’s a fixed payment of 300$ minimum (no matter whether you work or not). We declare and pay all that income every 3 weeks. Spain has had always a bad reputation regarding this way to issue the taxes but I don’t know about other freelancers in other countries.

Your videos are amazing! Instantly subscribed and binge-watching all of your content. Quick question: when you charge your day rate and you still need to rent out some equipment for the shoot (like a cinema lens from a rental house), would you pay for that from your day rate or ask your client to cover it? The same goes for travel fees, location fees, etc.
@DannyGevirtz5 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! That means a ton! I include my equipment in the day rate. So with equipment I do like $1250 and without equipment I do $850ish. Gas and all are separate expenses that you tack on. Keep receipts. Estimate costs into the total budget but that wont effect your day rate.

To complete your vid, you should also pick up personal projects (documentaries for exemple) if nothing comes. Lost a couple of years waiting for clients and shooting enough to earn a living but not enough to progress as a filmaker. Basically 2 years in i realised i was mostly filming some corporate stuff and getting more and more closed in this box. Now i have this principle of shooting something at least once every 2 weeks wether it's a doc, a short, or just a spec for fun with coffee beans, i've made more progress in the last 3 months than in the last 3 years.

Thanks for the info man! What about pre-production? Treatments/ phone calls/ shooting schedules/shot lists / research/ storyboards ect. Would you think it is fair to charge, as it's taking up your time to complete these things?

I've been charging for whole package always. Like, what's the price for shooting editing and brainstorming & preparing the whole shoot and that goes for photography and videos both. I'm maybe Mid-level shooter with 1500€ per day (wedding, etc. still shooter, I dont sell video yet for customers, 'coz I dont think I'm there with the quality yet). But this was great to watch. :) BTW, Do you have anything about Color Grading? I'm just stepping into video from still shooting so I'd love to learn more 'bout Color Grading.

When you talk about the 1200 day rate, is that including or excluding your rental fee?

Amazing Danny and thanks for sharing. I'm in the early transitions of a career in filming and had a few enquiries to shoot for clients where they tell me they want the highest quality possible and for some strange reason, drone footage, including editing, colour grading and in 4k. They end the enquiry by stipulating that their budget is extremely tight. So I politely ask what's their budget and I never get a reply back.

Hey man! Thanks for watching! I get plenty of flaky inquiries. If people demand all that and say they have a tight budget, they probably aren't worth working with in the first place.
