Fantastic video on product changes Spencer! The technique of upgrading, downgrading, and PC'ing sideways are all great advanced strategies that can have A LOT of upside potential, with exceptions, as you mentioned. The main technique that I use personally is downgrading annual fee cards to no annual fee cards when my spending habits change. Thanks for giving a personal example - definitely drives the point home very well! Also, congrats on 1K 🎉🎉!!

Thank you Stan! This is one of those topics that has been really relevant in my life lately and I know my friends can relate. A lot of us are at the ages where our oldest cards are not worth using anymore, and I don’t want people to cancel them when there are better options out there. The strategy you use is definitely a viable one. Open those higher tier cards for the higher welcome bonuses and then downgrade when that annual fee doesn’t make sense anymore. I’m glad you enjoyed the personal example. That’s where I have always found the most value in other peoples videos, so I like to share my experiences as well. Thank you for your support up to this point! It’s been a really fun ride so far and I’m excited to keep growing alongside you!

My very 1st credit card was a no annual fee from Citi cards. This was opened back in may of 2000 and was closed off due to inactivity since I was in between jobs. I have to remember next time with my chase freedom unlimited which is now my oldest card, not to make the same mistake twice. Even making a small purchase like a candy bar and then paying it off immediately will keep my card open and plus putting it on auto pay.
@SpencerJohnsonOfficial2 жыл бұрын
@@Th33Vultur3 It's great to learn from your mistakes and I know the rest of your credit card journey will benefit from this experience. It's good to have 1 small recurring charge on each of your cards to keep them open for sure. If your CFU is technically your oldest card now and you only have 5, you should be under 5/24 as soon as that one is 2 years old, which I assume it is if you started applying for cards in 2000. That's good news!

Great video, Spencer! I’ve been thinking about product changing my Capital One Quicksilver card because I’m planning to get the Chase Freedom Unlimited later this year. I would like to change the Quicksilver card to the SavorOne card, however Capital One will only allow me to product change to the Venture or the VentureOne card. So I think I’m just going to stick with the Quicksilver card for a while. It looks like I’ll have to apply for the SavorOne card to get it, so I will probably do that when I’m back over 5/24 again. You made a good choice to upgrade your Freedom Student card to the OG Freedom card! Honestly, you’re now getting the same benefits of the Freedom Flex with both the Freedom Unlimited and the OG Freedom.
@SpencerJohnsonOfficial2 жыл бұрын
Thank you John! That’s good to know that they don’t allow you to transfer that to the Savor One. I wonder why that is? The venture one could still be a good card to product change it to, especially if you want to start earning those travel miles and get the Venture X down the line. It’ll at least give you a taste of the travel game, especially if you want to get the CFU while you’re under 5/24. I always recommend to get all the Chase cards you want while you’re under 5/24, that way you never have to look back once you have the core Chase setup. And I agree with you! Although the OG freedom doesn’t earn in all the same ways as the flex, I really only wanted it for the rotating quarterly categories, so it worked out great! Especially in combination with my CFU and CSP. Thanks for your comment man! I learned something new today!

Hi! I have a question. I was wanting to switch my Student Discover card to the Chase Freedom Unlimited. Would this be considered a Product Change? How would this work and where do I start?
@SpencerJohnsonOfficial2 жыл бұрын
That’s a great question Preston! So the way that product changes work is that you have to do them within the same lender. And even more specific than that, sometimes you have to do them within the same family. For example, I assume your student discover card is part of the Discover it family of cards, meaning that you likely have to product change to another type of Discover it card. If I were you, I would call them to see what your product changing options are, but I would imagine the best choice would be the product change your student discover card to the Discover it cash back card. Every lender has different rules about what cards you can product change to and I’m not super familiar with Discover, but that would be my best guess. I would call them up and see what they tell you! But if it needs to be within the Discover it family, the Discover it cash back is one of the most popular beginner cards there is. Let me know if you have any luck getting in contact with them! I’ve heard their customer service is one of the best.

So if I have the CSP and want to get the CSR welcome bonus, I would have to downgrade my preferred to maybe a freedom then reapply for thr CSR correct? Also, is there a certain amount of time I would have to wait before reapplying?
@SpencerJohnsonOfficial2 жыл бұрын
Great question! And perfect timing too with the CSR 80k bonus expiring soon as I shared in my community post. But to answer your question, yes you would have to downgrade your CSP to one of the Freedom cards before applying for the CSR, and to be eligible for the SUB on the CSR, you could not have gotten a SUB on any other sapphire cards in the past 48 months. So basically the steps are to wait 48 months, product change your CSP to a Freedom card, and then apply for the CSR with the highest SUB available. You could still get the CSR right now if you just downgraded the CSP, but you wouldn't get the welcome bonus which is something I wouldn't want to miss out on.

Great video per usual! Just had some questions on the chase cards. Are you saying that if I have a chase unlimited card that I can product change to the OG chase freedom, then reapply for the chase unlimited as long as it has been over 2 years since I got the bonus for the chase unlimited? And I can do this with the chase flex as well? So there is no limit to how many of the same card I have with chase? Also I know that some companies only give out certain credit limits across all your cards. Is there a limit to chases for how much they give? I heard something like they don’t want to give out more than half of what you make for your job. Lastly, I know you mentioned that the chase preferred reward of 80,000 may be coming back. If it does, how long does it typically last for. Might be rethinking my chase applications of that bonus stays long enough for me to drop out of 5/24 in the summer. Thanks again and enjoy watching your videos!
@SpencerJohnsonOfficial Жыл бұрын
You're basically exactly right! There's no limit to how many Chase Freedom cards you can have (there is a cap of 1 Sapphire card at a time however) but Chase does limit you on credit limits across all your cards with them. Also, unfortunately, they seem to be really cracking down on product changing to the OG Chase Freedom, so this tool has become a bit more limited. You can always give them a call and try to though! It seems pretty dependent on what customer service rep you get. And keep in mind that to get the welcome bonus on one of the Freedom cards, while you can do it with each of them every 2 years, to get the SUB, you can't already have that exact card open. You'd have to do some product changing around to make that work. As for the Chase sapphire preferred, that offer is live in branch right now. 80k points for spending $4k in 3 months and an additional 10k points if you spend a total of $6k in the first 6 months. That offer should be coming online sometime this month from what I've heard. As for how long it will last, we really never know. You would hope at least for a quarter or so, but I wouldn't necessarily bet on that by any means. Especially if they're branding it as limited time. I hope this all helps a bit but let me know if I left something out!
@MPG2014 Жыл бұрын
No that helps out. Just trying to figure my game plan for this year for credit cards and want to make sure I get the most rewards possible and to make sure I utilize the chase offers too, especially since I've had the unlimited for over 2 years and could attempt to get it again, but wasn't sure if applying for 3 personal and 2 business cards for chase was going to be a problem with them. I could just do the 2 personal and 2 business, and leave out going for the unlimited again, but wasn't sure if that would raise any flags if I was applying for so many chase cards in a span of the next 2 years or not.
@SpencerJohnsonOfficial Жыл бұрын
That's a good question. I would recommend adding all the cards you actually want and will use with them first so that if you risk a denial from them on those 4th and 5th cards, it's not one you really want. Also if you do get denied, you could call the reconsideration line to see if you can shift credit limits around which is always a solid option.

@SpencerJohnsonOfficial Жыл бұрын
Congrats on adding the CFF! If you're preapproved for the CSR and CSP, I don't see a reason why you wouldn't get approved for the CFU. Most applications you do will likely be for cards you aren't preapproved for and you just have to take the chance sometimes. Great question! Every lender has different requirements and rules about product changing. Considering Credit One is one of the most predatory banks out there, I bet they'll try to not allow you to product change, but you can always give them a call to see. Most lenders allow you to product change though. Usually you just have to change your card to another card in its family that earns the same points/cash back.

So pretty much I have to make sure I pay off my balance first right?
@SpencerJohnsonOfficial2 жыл бұрын
Now that you mention it, I don’t think I’ve ever had to do that in the past. Usually with the cards that lenders let you product change between, they just change the card product itself but everything transfers over exactly as it was on your old card since the account number and everything stays the same. So I’m pretty certain they’ll just move those balances to the new card and you’ll pay it off on the same schedule. You could always call and confirm with your lender, but to my knowledge, you do not have to pay down any balances first. Although you always could if that makes you more comfortable.

At around 6 months you can call chase, just to ask- remember they won’t do a hard pull on your credit score so it’s okay to just ask as it won’t affect you. If you have good spending habits and etc, they might be able to product change in 6 months, otherwise if they deny your request, wait a year.

I believe you maybe are thinking about 2 years before you reapply? That would only be specifically for the Chase Freedom cards. In general, each card has its own window of time you have to wait to be able to reapply unless you’re talking about Amex who has the once in a lifetime welcome offer rule. In that case, you can only get the welcome bonus once on each of their cards. The two main rules I know off the top of my head are the Chase Freedom cards where you have to wait 24 months, and the Chase Sapphire cards where you have to wait 48 months. Does that help at all?

@@phillipnguyen5888 Ohh okay I see where you're coming from. You're lucky the reserve just came out with a new 80k SUB!! When I product changed one of my chase cards, it updated right away in my chase portal, but I think waiting a few days to a week is probably plenty long for their system to update. At the end of the day if you accidentally applied too soon and got denied, you could call their reconsideration line and they'll tell you why you were denied. If it's because of too many Sapphire cards, you can explain the product change and all should be fine. You should be fine after a couple days though I wouldn't worry! @SpencerJohnsonOfficial Жыл бұрын
Good question! The OG Chase freedom should still be giving you 5x on the rotating quarterly categories, so it's a solid card to have and you don't necessarily need to change it. If you want multiple credit cards, particularly the Freedom cards with Chase, I would recommend applying fresh for those and leaving your OG Freedom as is. That being because you can't actually receive the welcome bonus on the card you product change to, so you'd be missing out on a free 20,000 points. So if you don't want an additional card, product changing to one of the newer Freedom cards is fine, but if you're someone that has multiple cards and can balance them all fine, I would apply for whatever newer Freedom card you want fresh to get the welcome bonus rather than product changing. Just make sure you're under 5/24 if you do that. Let me know if that helped clear anything up!

@@Th33Vultur3 You should be under 5/24 before then! When does your first credit card hit it's 2-year anniversary? Once that happens, that's when you're at 4/24. Then you could get the bonus on the CFF!

Strongly disagree. Product change the card will lose the sign-up bonus

That’s a big tip I mention in the video! You definitely don’t want to product change to a card that you haven’t gotten the welcome bonus on before, but even if you do, there are ways to get the bonus you missed out on in the future depending on the lender. That’s a big thing I talk about near the end if you wanna cheat more!

That was literally his point throughout 😂🤦🏻♂️

It happens! Sometimes people can have a predisposition against things but if you hear me out through the whole video you can see that we agree!

@@SpencerJohnsonOfficial I don't think you can do that with Amex.
@SpencerJohnsonOfficial2 жыл бұрын
That is definitely a good point. Amex has a once in a lifetime welcome bonus rule and that’s a great example of a lender you want to be extremely careful product changing with. I wish I mentioned that in the video, but thank you for bringing that up. Maybe that’s what Yechen was talking about in his original comment!

Hey man . I have a chase freedom student that was opened back in September of 2019 . I rarely use it and was wanting to know if I can product change from this to the freedom unlimited whilst still being allowed to get the welcome bonus of $200 and the 5% cash back on gas . I’ve contacted chase over chat but they don’t seem to give me firm or clear answer

Great question Chris. If you product change the card straight into the Chase Freedom Unlimited, you won’t be eligible for the welcome bonus. That’s why I would recommend that you product change your Chase freedom student to the OG Chase freedom card like I did (if you want to use the rotating quarterly categories) and then apply fresh for the CFU to get the welcome bonus. That way you don’t miss out on that offer. When you product change a card you’re technically getting a brand new card, but unless you actually apply for it fresh with the welcome bonus attached to the application, then they won’t give you any bonuses at all. I hope that helps!

@@SpencerJohnsonOfficial thank you for your reply . I actually have the newly updated freedom flex with chase already , which was what replaced the OG freedom . Does the OG freedom and the flex have the same rotating categories? If so could I technically double dip on the cash back rewards?
@SpencerJohnsonOfficial2 жыл бұрын
You got it! That’s the nice thing about product changing to the OG Chase freedom. You can’t apply for it anymore so you’re not missing out on a sign up bonus, and you still get the rotating quarterly categories up to $1500 a quarter on it + $1500 on every other OG freedom/freedom flex you have.
