Does your laminate snap, crack and pop?! Do you know that you can tell a good lamination job from the way it sounds? Do you know how to hold your resin pot? Is it even a problem how you hold it? This video is a good solid introduction to fibreglassing for those who are just beginning, covering the basic foundations of the craft. For those of you who know the basics but want a bit more insight into how to tackle epoxy/carbon projects - don't worry we gotcha too - this vid also throws a few ideas around that you may not have considered.
In this video Shayne walks you through a quick polyester fibreglassing job he needs to do on Paikea. It is for the port light window that we removed so that we could install our new trampoline nets outside. We hope this helps those of you, who like us, are renovating/pimping their own project too.
Lots of simple tricks and good practice methods covered in this fibreglass tutorial. Whether you are a competent fibreglasser or just starting out, it's always interesting to see how someone else tackles a job in a real life situation. We hope you will get something from us sharing our work and that you all enjoy the process!

I can’t emphasize enough how much excellent content is in this one video. You’ve covered the basics and the gotchas in an easily understandable format while doing this on your own boat. I’ve been glassing for some years now, and just started with carbon, and just said “yep” out loud when you mentioned the snap, crackle, pop of air bubbles. I’ve dealt with so many repairs where voids in the original layup caused flexing and cracking and water ingress. Those bubbles are so easily avoidable, and yet it seems that boat manufacturers are more interested in a fast build than a good build.

Thanks for the great feedback. Glad you enjoyed the video. Let's hope people take note and do the best lamination job they can 👍

You guys should have thousands of subscribers - such great content. I remember when I started building a carbon 38ft Newick tri. I was worried about laying up the carbon but in the end the listening trick, and feeling the carbon being stuck well to the core with the squeegee let us get it all done (vag bagging helped too). Love your work.

Some really cool tips there and love the self made sound effects that a bubble in the laminate might make :D

Thanks. Could you have cleaned up with a wire / nylon brush? I would have cleaned with styrene, then prime with resin thinned with styrene, when it starts to go tacky apply the cloth. And finish off with Peelply

What type/brand of foam is used? What foams would you recommend? Can you use foams with 95% closed cell and 5% open? Can you list all brands or types of materials used.

HI! What are the ingredients of the filler to cover that 2mm bottom gap?

Hi Yann, it is cabocil powder mixed into the resin. You can also use a microfiber powder. Cheers,Shayne

what did you use to glue the foam in place?
@youngbarnacles
@youngbarnacles 3 жыл бұрын
The same laminating resin but with a cabasil and silica blend to thicken it. Depending on how the geometry is I will make the mix thicker or runnier.
