Awesome short video! It was exactly what I needed. I really appreciate the fact that you make the effort to cut out all the chatter and keep this short. No "ums" and "ahs" nor talking about "uncles in Saskatchawan." Just the facts. Thank you! I subscribed based upon this video.

Very helpful video. I used CHIRP to put some channels in my Baofeng, by typing in each frequency, name, offset etc.--a tedious process. I only did 10 channels, mostly local repeaters, and it took over half an hour. So Thanks!

Awesome tutorial! I've had an easy time of using CHIRP, I also use it on a Mac and also successful on a Surface Pro 3 running Windows 10. Agree, programming using the buttons on the radio is painful. I did, however, print off a programming menu and keep it in my radio bag (in the event). Having the ability to have multiple images saved with different channels/freq's is a huge plus.

I like that you show that you can disable TX on either (or both) bands, (Many vids don't show this setting at all!). This is VITALLY IMPORTANT for those who buy these JUST to use them as a scanner. (These radios are a legit decent choice for "Railfans".) Plus,even NOW there are still places (Like here in Pittsburgh,PA) where most PD,FD and EMS is untrunked,analog UHF. If ANYONE is intending to use one as a JUST a scanner and wants to KEEP LEGAL, Disable TX on BOTH bands, that way you won't even accidentally transmit!

Thanks for the sub! The cables are a constant battle, I have one that worked fine for years then after a Windows update, problems. You want to make sure you have a legit Prolific or FTDI chip, there are clones of both. Then you want to make sure you have the correct driver for your chip which might not be the latest driver, hope that makes sense.

@@TheSmokinApe Yep!, sometimes you need an OLDER driver. This is BTW true of a LOT of PC hardware! Most people think "latest" is best. Nope,Kiddos: You need the CORRECT driver for your hardware, And it's NOT always the latest!

I was able to get this information regarding the Baofeng radios Specifically the UV-5Rs. FYI: What about MURS, FRS, or GMRS? Can you operate the UV-5R radios other than the ham radio freqs.? This is where it gets a little murky. The Multi Use Radio Service, Family Radio Service and the General Mobile Radio Service are all regulated by FCC part 95 rules. A part 90 certified radio can be used on GMRS but only a part 95 certified radio can be used on FRS or MURS. Will you get in trouble for using a non type accepted radio? Probably not, the FCC doesn’t seem to be interested in use on a personal level unless the use is causing harmful or malicious interference to a licensed radio service. My comment here as a ham operator it appears that we can operate the UV-5R (if part 90 certified for ham radio service) on the GMRS freqs but not on the family radio services or FRS 16 channels. You must buy those FRS/MUR radios that are certified FRS/MURS as part 95. Anyway...Thanks so much for this video I registered with radioreference.com nice data files and by you showing with the menus I can for the first time understand how to use it. Thanks! 73's

Glad you liked the video! I wouldn’t use it on; FRS, GMRS or MURS. I’m not a lawyer so I won’t speak to the legality but I think there are issues using them on each of those services.

So I just bought some UV-5R’s. I’m moving to Washington and wanted to use them between the two vehicles were driving up there. Do I need to have multiple channels/codes depending on where we’re driving through? Or can I use the same channels/codes for the entire drive? I was thinking FRS channels only since we’re not licensed yet. But for now it’s just for the drive, car to car.

Well, it’s not legal to use a Baofeng to transmit on FRS. That said I’d use the same frequencies for the trip....

Great Video. I have the BaoFeng BF-R3 Tri-Band. There is no match for the model in the set up so I used the ur 5. So far it would work as you explained except the display mode "A" and "B". One will show the channel name and the other will show a frequency but not the same as the frequency it is on. You say in your tutorial that one should really match the other. Any Suggestions?

It can, but there might be an issue because you are using a different radio. Check the chirp settings, make the change via the menu, read the radio back to chirp and check the settings again. That should or could show how to modify in the future 👍

I think it’s 21 and 22, MDF-A and MDF-B. You can pick the; channel name, number or frequency.

Great video, thank you. After you program a repeater frequency, the offset, tone, etc., do you have to remain in frequency mode to use the repeater or can you revert to Channel mode and transmit/receive. I ask because when you are in channel mode, the frequency displayed in Channel B is not the offset frequency, it is a different channel/frequency. So when you transmit on the repeater frequency while in channel mode, I presume you won’t hear any responses. Would that be correct?

Nice video, very clear and informative for us newbies, but at the end I was confused. So you turned on your radio and 1. Why didn't the name you set up for POWER ON NAME: show up? 2.) Then you turned to channel mode, then you hit the mode and began to hit the down arrow and it started saying all these random numbers, then it began repeating 5,5,5,5....and 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, as you were pushing the downward button. For a newbie suddenly the ending part became more for a seasoned veteran who knows what you were doing, because you stopped explaining what and why everything was happening at the end of the video. Can someone who understood the end part explain clearly all of what was going on please? Thanks
@TheSmokinApe

Hi, power on message was turned on. The 5’s and 4’s are the radio saying the channel numbers as I went through them, I was going quickly so it was only saying the first part of the number.

Hey man im NEW to this and an old fart I follow what you are doing as far as loading the programs into your radio will the radio hold all the repeaters lets say you choose all of oklahoma will it download them all???? Or do you need to be selective as to what towns you go through ergo we travel from oklahoma to Arizona and pass through various parts of Texas, New Mexico and Arizona....am I being confusing???
@TheSmokinApe
@TheSmokinApe 5 жыл бұрын
This particular radio only has 128 memory slots so there is a limit. You can use the proximity search to find repeaters in the areas you will be traveling in.

I am almost dialed in on this programming. Uv5r but I can't figure out why. I've got the name of the channel like a weather channel but the second line doesn't show that same frequency that goes with that name. It just stays the same. I hope I'm making myself clear here. When I change the channel to another weather channel, it doesn't correspond with that channel on the second line

What's the deference between channel mood and frequency mood?? Another think when you turn on the frequency mood it shows two frequency numbers one on top line and one on bottom line so what's deference between those two numbers or lines? Is it one to receive and one to send or something else?? Please let me know.
